The cheapest method to get your Plasma TV with defective Y-buffers up and running again. If you have a better method let me know. ;-)
It is quite some work but well worth it IMO, especially for older TVs.
Who knows what breaks next? What I don't like about replacing whole boards is you don't know what else might be broken.
The main difficulty is not soldering a QFP-100 package sized component but one with a bottom pad on a large and very well dissipating copper plane. I think not all Y-buffer chips have these pads but when they do they should be soldered on the board.
In this case I drilled a little hole in the middle of the large pad where there was no copper and put solder paste first in it which creeps under the IC and connects it to the plane.
Some solder paste could also be put underneath the IC before assembling it.
The very best would be a SMD rework station that allows precise positioning of the IC and soldering at the same time.
