When only he got stopped by the yakuza and not his brother he felt like he betrayed him and lost his honor. After rebelling against his superiors he only stays alive to atone and give his brother an opportunity for revenge. He chooses to live in the cage and endure it. A caged Lion who throughout 0 constantly gets toyed with by his wardens. He also meets others who chose to live free and wild like nishitani. In the end Majima decides that he was at fault for allowing himself to be toyed with by sagawa and shimano. So to prevent that in the future he abandons his soldier attitude for the more wild and tenacious aspects of nishitani and sagawa to become unpredictable. His core emotions remain relatively unchanged but are now not always on display. Him beating his underlings also probably comes from his view on "modern" less romanticized low level yakuza as they lack the discipline that he displayed during his early years and will pretty much do all kinds of fucked up shit if left alone. Like when he saw 2 of his goons harassing makoto at the end of 0.
