We had to replace the Prop seals in my Yamaha 225 HPDI Outboard. It has had water getting into this lower unit oil for a year or so. The temp got down to 20 degrees and pushed oil pass the prop seals. So now we have to replace them. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for this - the seals on mine were all chewed up and I couldn’t tell which way around the new ones went. I thought the inner one would go lip in to keep the gear oil in, and the outer would go lip to the prop side to cope better with the water pressure. But no, they both go in with the lip out to the prop and water side. Probably cos the water pressure on the outside is way higher than the pressure inside the drive unit, so emphasis is on keeping the water out! (If anyone doesn’t know this you want the lip (spring side or cup side) towards the higher pressure or liquid side as then the pressure tends to push the lip towards the shaft and improve sealing)😊😊

As a general rule of thumb, the springs go toward what ever you are trying seal, in this case the water, outside.

Good show, informative and a little entertaining. I just pulled 2000 150 hp Johnson 2-stroke lower unit and took it to local shop to get those seals, the 2 under the water pump and the 2 little o-ring seals under the shift rod grommet replaced.

I would like to add to add grease to the top of the first seal and then the second seal helps keep those springs from rusting.

Yamaha is a great engine. That being said they need to rethink how they seal that shaft. It’s a huge problem. Good vid though brother. Can tell you work for a living

I got more time than money so I try to everything myself. I sure every boat has the same type seals but I know what you talking about. It’s about 4 sets of seal on the lower unit that could be leaking. And they are not easy to get to. But thanks for watching.

Hey thanks for the very informative video, i have the same problem. My question is, are those the only seals i need to replace for me to get no water in the oil? Thanks
@thebasshunter
@thebasshunter 2 года назад
Unfortunately no, There are two o-rings that go on the housing that holds the prop shaft and there are seals under your water pump. Plus there are seals around your gear selector shaft that goes from your lower unit up to your motor. So, no there are many more seal that could be leaking. This was the easiest on to try first. I still have to water in the oil problem. So that fix did not fix mine. I but the seals for the housing but have not gotten around to trying that. I hope that helps.

Hey Basshunter. Do you need to replace the large O ring as well or is this all I need to do?
@thebasshunter
@thebasshunter 3 года назад
It would be best if you replaced the large O-rings as well. Because I just ordered the large one all so. I still have some water in my lower unit. You also need to replace the seal under your water pump. That all the places water can get in. There is a seal on your gear shifting rod also. Because you don’t know where the water is coming in but must people will not feel comfortable doing all that work. Because the large o-rings is going to be difficult because you have to get the shaft housing out and that tuff must of the time without the puller they have for that. But I sure it can be done. I will find out sometime here myself. Good luck!

@@thebasshunter the issue I’m having is a slow slow drip of gear out out from infront of my prop. I think it may just be the seals.

Thanks for the encouragement! Got' er' dun'. Scary part was trying to keep the screw threads off of the sealing surface on the shaft itself.
@thebasshunter
@thebasshunter Год назад
You are right about the screw. I think a longer screw would make it a little easier. I’m glad you got it done.
@tadhumphreys
@tadhumphreys Год назад
@@thebasshunter To your point, I went to the hardware store about bought some shorter and longer screws. Used the longer ones on the second seal. I bought #8 pan head sheet metal screws that have a smaller head diameter than what you used. I used an awl to poke a hole through the metal portion of the seal to start the screw. If those seals were facing the other way it would have been a way easier job. Again. many thanks!

I'm having issues with my Mercury and a friend is telling me it's bad gas. Have ever had bad gas in your engine? If so how did you fix it? Tight now I c as n floor the hot foot but it takes for ever to accelerate.
@thebasshunter
@thebasshunter 2 года назад
Bad can be a problem if you are buying gas from a little mom and pop gas station. But if you buying gas from big stations like Quick Trip that’s not your problem. Little gas stations don’t move enough gas in and out of their tanks. When it get hot outside. The gas is cool in their tanks and if makes the tank sweat 😓. That’s how water get in gas. But your problem could be many things. You may need to change your fuel / water separator filter or fuel filter. You may need new spark plugs. My buddy is have fuel problems on his boat also. His primer / Squeezy ball that you can pump to get fuel to the engine will not get hard. If you think you have bad gas. Pour you and can of Sea Foam in the gas tank. That is supposed to get rid of the water in gas. I would change my filters and spark plugs also. I changed mine every two years. I will be changing mine here next week. But I also run about 3 oz of Sea Foam in every tank of new gas in my boat. And the I add about the same 3 oz of Startron. I hope that helps.
@TX_Nupe

@@thebasshunter funny, I did add sea foam to my half tank of gas then added 5 more gallons to a new station and that is when it started.

Man I just left the Mechanics shop that fool thought I was a fool he wanted to charge me $2235 to replace my seals on my Twin F225’s, $2090 to replace the engine anodes and $1389 to replace both timing belts! Maybe this guy thought I was a Trump supporter all of these jobs I would consider a 3 on a scale of 10 being hard to do! At least he didn’t tell me that my warp drive was low on die lithium crystals. 😂
