I’m no stranger to synths, but WOW. What amazes me most about the CS-80 is how distinct it sounds. Most synths make their differences apparent when you actually use them. Most people couldn’t tell most synths apart in a blind test. Certain things might be recognizable like an effect or in some cases the filter. But everything the cs-80 does sounds like a cs-80. The filter and the envelopes together do something so unique that i can’t really put my finger on. Maybe its the layout that lends itself to certain sounds being made, but I heard Vangelis all over this video even though you didn’t play anything explicitly vangelis. Such a unique synth. Too bad there hasn’t really been a true reissue from yamaha

If Yamaha hadn’t made the hard switch from analog to digital in 1980, the CS80 would’ve led to a dozen more successors like the Prophet 5, Jupiter 8 and OBX. They would’ve engineered out everything which made this model so difficult to maintain and kept everything which made it so incredible.

They also might’ve taken the opportunity to configure the microprocessor to create digital patch memory as in those other models. This one only included the hardwire presets in the front panel and those miniaturized version of the slider set in the upper left-hand corner. That was insufficient.

I had a CS60 (mono version) and it was amazing. I'm not much of a keyboardist but I used to jam with some jazz guys and they were amazed by the sounds I mad come out of it. Sliders and lever allow you to really change things in real time.

One of my jam buddies had the CS-60 and his dad had the CS-80 and I got to mess with both! back when they came out !! My bud would leave the CS-60 for months at my house it was an unbelievable machine. I'm more guitar orientated but these have an amazing sound. This guy also had a Crumar that was also unbelievable he left that all the time also. @ 73 I miss those days. still play! Never put it down !!!!!. LOL Z.K.

A very good way to appreciate the real power of a synth : without effects. Present synths sounds are drowned in tons of reverb, delay, chorus etc... Here we can hear all the richness of each sound as if we were present in the room. Thank you so much, it's a real discovery

This is a beautiful sounding, iconic synth. It's interesting that it isn't actually that hard to imitate (try softer attack times and add a little instability to the oscilators) yet no one has come with a reasonable copy, not even Yamaha. That speaks about the true spirit of the instrument, the ghost in the machine, if you may.

A truly lovely video. Very well produced and played. However, I must take issue with your understanding of the GX-1, the CS-80s direct predecessor. The GX-1 was not an "organ with some synthesizer" mixed in. It was ALL SYNTHESIZER. In fact, it was effectively 3 CS-80s lashed together. It even had programmability via a CS-80-esque mini-panel interface (in a slide-out drawer). And the GX-1 absolutely, positively, make no mistake, had aftertouch. Indeed, the top mini "solo" keyboard even had bebung (sliding the key back and forth triggered modulation). What you may have been thinking of were Yamaha's line of Electone organs, which were indeed electronic organs, only. Yamaha used the same or similar outer case and control panel for the GX-1 as for the Electones. The GX-1 was a mighty beast for its day (c.1976), as more than reflected in its price tag.

I have loved analog synthesizers for 50 years now, both playing and listening to both music and tv/film soundtracks. For me, the golden era of synth music was between 1977 until 1983; in 1983 everything unfortunately changed when the DX7 was introduced. In those years, i played and loved every type of synth, but, whilst appreciating the importance of the CS80 and its unique sound and legacy, its tonal qualities have never 100% appealed to me. To my ears, it too often has a Koto/Shamisen tone, which i understand gives it its unique sound, but this tone seems to be present on so many bass, lead etc... sounds - it just doesn't do it for me. The Prophet 5, OBX, SEM, SH5, JP4 and JP8 (amongst many!) sound appeals to me more. Fantastic demo though of a truly unique instrument.

I suspect that Asian/Japanese audience prefer more clear and bright timbres than the rest of the World. That's why all Yamaha's including CS and DX series sound so thin in comparison to Moog for example. The same goes to some Korg's and early Rolands.

Def an endangered species, LOL! And there's probably at least a dozen of them collecting dust somewhere in someone's storage unit that they inherited from their deceased grandpa. I'll just have to be satisfied with digital emulations from VST's like Arturia and Cherry Audio. I also have a Hydrasynth Deluxe which was designed to sound similar to the CS80. But, you know... there's really only one CS80.

I remember walking into the original “Guitar Center” when it was located across the street from where it is today and hearing that I had just missed a Stevie Wonder jam/demo on a new synth he had been waiting to come in. It was the CS-80. Yamaha’s latest masterpiece, with a price tag somewhere around 8k. Needless to say, they had it pretty much roped off in the center of the store. I’m not sure if it was to preserve Stevie’s fingerprints or to keep us dreamers away. I personally never even dreamed of owning one. Loved the sound but, it was far too pricey for my budget. So, I was content to walk out with a Yamaha CS-5 single oscillator, mono synth. My very first synth. I was happy, and went home to make music with my pals. It would be forty years before I got my hands on a CS-80. An Arturia CS-80 soft synth, that is. Yours is in such wonderful condition, but mine is much kinder on my back. Congratulations on your acquisition. Have fun.

Having grown up in the 60s and 70s I felt let down by the promise of the Synthesizer. Your constant reference to Stevie is natural he and Zawinul and I guess Jan Hammer and a few others Tangerine and Windy but just weren't enough out there in that vast nomans land between pop/rock simplicity and Academic electronica like Boulez I reckon. So now Snarky Puppy and Louis Cole seem to be breathing new life into it but still at the end of the day it's just another color on the pallet I guess I expected a revolution as a child I mean the Space Race even fizzled. I'd rather sit down at a Steinway D or a Mason & Hamlin or Fazioli I guess.

I had a CS70M back in the early 90's but it got stolen when I left it in a parked car!! Oh well! To be honest I never really understood how to program it, as I had previously been using Yamaha DX synths.

Cool playing, and what a sound! However, I believe you are mistaken regarding the sine wave. AFAIK, it's at the same frequency as the other waveforms, it just fills out those frequencies that are cut off by the high pass filter, without adding any top end due to noe having harmonics, giveng you the ability to take advantage of the awesome sounding timbres from the highpass without thinning the sound. The andromeda a6 does the same thing, and also has per voice ring modulators and a ribbon, all directly inspired by the cs80.

You should look up Scott Rodriguez. He has a true stereo mod, a unison mod, an octave lowering mod, etc. Even Uli Behringer had him do some work on his. Scott's personal flagship version is unbelievable to hear.

I wish I had one of these. I have the sound banks for the CS80 on my Montage, but it's a pale comparison to the real deal. Some of those sounds I have used on tracks off a few of my albums. I also have to make do with my ribbon controller on my Hydrasynth.

Polyphonic (channel) aftertouch for that vintage of synth is quite uncommon. And I don't care what anyone says, but there is absolutely nothing in software emulation that sounds as gritty and as real as this hardware behemoth in person. Pure bestiality.

Unreal machine. But my god you will need James Walker at Synth repair services on speed dial for servicing. My CS70M was needy and that is nowhere near as complex. No poly synth is as expressive (except a GX1) and the ring modulator is something to behold.

Could you demo the bass line from the 1980 Doctor Who theme? There’s a video from the early 80’s of Peter Howell using a CS-80 and some other gear to make that version of the Who theme. Almost all the incidental music in Doctor Who in the 1980s was done on the CS-80!

I really love Poly aftertouch, and would love to try the cs80.. its a dream.. i have 3 synths and 1 midi keyboard with poly AF.. the ensoniq VFX and EPS16+, Gem S3 Turbo and the midikeyboard Elka mk77.. Have you played any of these boards and if so how does the aftertouch compare?

Yeah I heard or saw in another video that the CS-80 came out in '76, so its a Bicentennial synth, it's a beautiful synth, but oh shit that's a synth that's anything but accessible, in terms of simplicity and portability. @@AndyWhitmore

Sounds wonderful thankyou. I bought one of these second hand in the 90s I think from the London Synthesizer Centre near Euston Station. The first shop that really introduced the synthesizer into the UK. Nearly lost it on the train as the fight case (which was akin to a huge coffin on wheels) made a bolt for the carriage door near Crewe. It was so heavy in it's case it damaged the back of the estate taxi which took me to the station adding to the cost. Bought it and used it mainly for piano practice which now seems an absurd waste. Once had lugged it upstairs it sure wasn't moving again lol. £1900 in those days and sold it for a lot less. In an era when keyboards of this stature were not regarded with the esteem they are today. Then the oscillators would drift and need a specialist to correct, but none to be found outside of London. Has this been solved or an ongoing issue for your model? Now have modern boards but if still had this and some other top synthesizers owned and later traded from that era, would sure be quids in. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

I remember seeing one demoed at the London Synthesizer Centre when they first came out - they wouldn’t have let me near it as I was a pennyless teenager at the time. The CS80 has always been my dream synth - not that I’d actually want to own one now due to the downsides (cost, weight, responsibility, maintaining it, etc). I have a Hydrasynth which scratches my CS80 itch considerably, but if Behringer actually deliver on their planned clone version, I will be very interested!

@@PhilW222 Will be interesting to see if Behringer do deliver, will they recreate the user memory under the flap that uses a replica using mini sliders rather than electronic memory that then came in on Jupiter 8 etc. My CS80 was super reliable apart from the detune problem. I owned a Rhodes (ARP) Chroma bought from Argents after that which broke in no time but also super costly now. Unlike the Yamaha you'd surely need to be skilled with electronic repair to make that a viable purchase. The London Synthesizer Centre is still going in Manchester under the Chase brand. Sadly only cheap electronic pianos rather than the Oberheims, Polymoogs, Arp Quadras etc that used to regularly be on display.

My guess is that Behringer will look to do the user memories as electronic presets rather than the mini sliders. It would be nice to have some onboard effects like delay and a good reverb. Maybe the ability to split the keyboard, arpeggiator, etc? There are definitely a few enhancements I would like to see without messing with the core engine.

Wasn't cheap? Must be the understatement of the year! I missed purchasing one for peanuts in the 90's (didn't actually want one then) and then thought again about purchasing one about 7 yrs ago but just about soiled myself at the prices they were going for. (but hey I was never good at that type of investing as I sold my Moog Rogue for £75 and swapped my Minimoog for a Poly 61 - and don't even ask what I did with my hammond C3 and Hohner Clav 😞!)

I think it will be silly to add a huge value for old synth as the music styles have changed quite dramatically in todays date and climax. These synths are basically becoming antiques to own, but to add in todays composition, I wouldn’t bother keeping them. Fairlight cmc overshadow med many synths fir the beginning of the 80’s

I don't think the value of an instrument has anything to do with the latest music styles. Fine instruments will always be in demand, and at a premium price. It certainly is an antique, and that makes it difficult to incorporate in today's computer-centric compositions, but the expressivisity of the CS-80 is absolutely unmatched in any keyboard instrument.

I have Maschine in my computer and I truly get why everyone ends up sounding just like everyone else. However the happiest I am playing with it is when I make my own sounds from scratch. That's what synthesizers are for.

Black Corp has the Deckard's Dream (MPE) then working on firmware for connecting two CS80 clone units I've heard. Then buy a Rachael ring module and an MPE+ Osmose controller (far more advanced than the CS80), I have (2) Osmose units in a double manual with Oberheim OB-X8m & Iridium module (MPE) and still probably way cheaper than the CS80. So many modern options so dare I suggest beat the CS80 and all with digital conveniences. I like it but can't justify it because there's so much else available that go way beyond the limits of the past. Odd that it's only just now becoming available at affordable prices.

Of course there are so many great ways to get great sounds- I just like everything about this synth - including it’s look! It plays very nicely and is essentially a live synth rather than a synth to be set up and recorded

Iove old synths and have some, not that expensive, but i have a korg poly 800, a DW 6000 and a DW 8000 ...Someday the caps will fail....i bought the mac Au plug in for Apples Logic pro and it sounds exactly the same, like Your Demo Sounds here, for 79 Euro....what did U pay for Your CS 80?

In its day, the CS was no doubts amazing, there is no argument to be made on that one. But most "iconic of all time"? That statement I would strongly challenge. The true power of the CS-80 wasn't so much the sound generation possibilities, because lots of other synths can create very similar sounds, but rather the live performance capabilities, which for the time nothing else could touch.
