When Yamaha's flagship Genos digital arranger workstation hit the market several years ago, it was a game changer, and legions of keyboardists, composers, and songwriters jumped onboard. Now, the second-generation Genos2 assumes the mantle with more great updated sounds, accompaniment styles, and effects; fresh, innovative features; and a host of technical improvements that make it the new 800-pound gorilla of performance arranger workstations. And while its actual weight is a gig-friendly 31 pounds, the Yamaha Genos2 is nevertheless a beast. Boasting unparalleled sample quality, cutting-edge styles, and pro-level connectivity, Genos2 defines the state of the art in songwriting and performance keyboards. Topped off by extensive onboard MIDI and audio recording facilities and seamless DAW integration, the Yamaha Genos2 is the only keyboard you need to ace an important gig.

Thank you at last for an honest review all the others are saying how amazing it is but to be honest like you say it’s maybe 10% better and that’s about it. Thanks very much cheers

PA5X has a better onboard Style editor. But… Genos sounds much better. Korg is still behind even compared to Tyros 5. Genos 2 is a great upgrade. Think about 800 Styles. These are another level of quality.

Very interesting short review. When will we start seeing videos of actual musicical performances vs rooms filled with keyboards? At age 60, I went back to university ro complete my Bachelor of Music degree, jazz piano major. I saw kids that could sit at an acoustic piano, and blow you away with talent. I have had a home studio for over 40 years, and own Korg arrangers, and few years ago switched to Yamaha Tyros 5, and work as a full time musician, solo & duos, using a Tyros 5 & Nord Stage 4., performing over 300 eventsva year. The Genos 2 will be my upgrade to my tyros, and I think to say the Genos is for home use is not completely accurate. If you learn how to use either a Genos, Tyros or Korg arranger, you will be successful booking lots of events, as a solo or duo, but able to sound like a band, and charge top dollar. Lets remember you cant buy creativity and talent, but ‘less’ is ‘more’. I have seen some great duos using arrangers that are top class professionals. Btw…my Tyros has no time to be in the house, because its too busy making me money playing events. Also, if you need more styles beyond whats in the Genos 2, you can explore the midi to style converter, and if you are short on sounds beyond the 1900 in the Genos, then hook up a MacBook on stage and midi the Genos and mix in Omnispere, Arturia V9 collection, NI Komplete 14 etc, and since Genos supports audio and midi over usb, you wont need an audio device, or bluetooth to connect to apps on an iPad. People that use their keyboards and/or arrangers at home should just enjoy their hobby and focus on improving as a musician. For those others that are full time professionals, trust me…the Genos 1 or 2, are not just for home hobbyists.

Agreed, but unfortunately, here in USA, arrangers have no place on the stage, and you never see those. As a matter of fact, you barely see any keyboard in any music venue these days, it's mainly drums and a pair of guitars and a bass player along with backing tracks, best case scenario, you might see a stage piano or a controller along, I just saw a one man band was playing, pa4x in a small bar in key-west back in October and honestly it was my first time in 20 years to see an arranger in a public place!!!!

Most of the S.art2 sounds that carry over from the Genos have been reworked. They don't actually tell you this, but even the existing Kino and Seattle Strings just to mention a few that actually comes back from the Motif era sounds better in the Genos 2, because these often had bashing for sounding too harsh in the Genos and there is several others like Brass and horns that is noticeable better coded and had some new articulations added that makes them much more playable. I agree that since not all Styles use the ambient drums it may seem like a minor upgrade. All in all I find it a bigger update than I first thaught and I really do love to play it over the Genos. The sounds are so more expressive with actual FM sounds than sampled EP's and Brass sounds, even I really would like if Yamaha comes up with an update for the Genos 2 2.0 update, that lets you load .syx files to expand the FM engine. these sounds only take kilobytes to store in the memory. They could have loaded all the available FM sounds on the net and only made a dent into the user memory area available. Even being a preset engine atm the FM sounds can be set to single, dual and quad unison with detune so you can get quite rich FM sounds by editing your own custom sounds. What is needed the most is that Yamaha pulls the finger out from where the sun don't shine and gives the YEM software a major overhaul and opens up for some of the more advanced settings that only Yamaha have access to for their s.art samples.

Yes you are nailing the nail on the head most of the people who are Demo the Genos 2 don't say what it can do they just play and bragging about Don't get me wrong I have the Genos 1 and I like it My 20 years old Roland G70 has a better style editing than the Genos/Genos 2

Last year I nearly bought a Tyros 5 because I like the top quality instrument sounds in it mainly with the intention of just using them in a multi tracking setting just like I id with my Yamaha PSS-790 and Casio CT-700 all those years ago but also I thought Tyros 5 might be great to have in addition to Halion 6 or as a hardware alternatie to the full paid version of Halion or even an alternative to Komplete as the saxophones are one example of a sound in even Tyros 5 that blows Kontakt Factory Band library out of the water. After 2024 I might reconsider my options but maybe the PSR-SX700 might be a more modestly priced keyboard if I still want something more up to date than my Yamaha PSR-295. But it's not strictly true that I would have no use for the auto accompaniments whatsoever because I know what the Tyros keyboards and PSR-SX keyboards sound like when used for playing arrangements of Christmas carols even though for that I prefer my generic sounding Roland sound modules like the SC-88 Pro. I can remember during my adolescence wanting a Tyros or Tyros 2 before I knew about VST instruments or even had a DAW but if I still want a Tyros or Tyros 2 you can now get them very cheap and they still sound OK even today. It's highly unlikely I could ever afford a Genos 2 but now I would probably choose the Montage M over Genos 2 as that is better for pro level sequencing and it's also a synthesizer. It's just as well I no longer have any music stores near me where I can play Genos or Genos 2 in person because if I had a whirl on one I would buy it even if it meant taking out a chunk of my savings but I suppose you only live once but also some of the hate comments people leave discourages me but even when Tyros 5 and Genos were new people even hated on those keyboards so in regards to the hate comments there's nothing really new under the sun.

Montage 8 or m8x are far better instruments for a pro
@LittleRichard1988
@LittleRichard1988 9 месяцев назад
@@synth.s I would go for the Montage 6 as it's the cheapest option and it might be just about possible for me to save up for 3 years to get a Montage 6 even if it's the original Montage which will be 10 years old in 2026 but it will still be usable in modern productions. Or if I was willing to wait another year or 2 then maybe the Montage M6 might be a better alternative to buying a Genos or Genos 2.

Genos 2 has AWM engine not AWM2. You said AWM2 in your video. Yamaha will not bring AWM 2 engine very soon to their arranger cuz their workstation sell will drop.

pa5x is better when you use a volume pedal as it only controls the right hand 1 2. an3 voices, genos can do it too but too many steps involved. genos has the hold button for left hand which is nice, pa5x can do it but WAY too many steps! I have both but I prefer the new genos2
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 9 месяцев назад
Thats really not a problem. You can select which of the 4 parts L, R1,2,3 the damper works on and its saved with each registrations. The volume can be assigned to left, r1 r2 r3, style, m.pad, midi, mic. Also saved with each registrations.
@Steven-zg5bq
@Steven-zg5bq 9 месяцев назад
thats a lot of unnecessary steps, korg you just plug in the volume pedal and v1 v2 and v3 are controlled. not the mic or the style settings. this a unique feature to the korg. also if you want to sustain the left hand forever just press one button and the left hand chord will play until changed. this is where genos blows korg out the water.@@mrdali67

@@Steven-zg5bq Can't really see your point .. It's fully programable. You can practically set it like you want it for each registration. Whats not to like ?

Yes so sad we do not see more keyboard, and piano players. I play mostly private corporate events and agree most bar duos/trios are guitar and bass, maybe drums and backing tracks for keyboard parts. Sad but true.

Come on be fair in your judgment It’s not about the keyboard body or looks it’s about sound quality and functionality.. this is very harsh review on Genos 2.

When it comes to sound, pa5x bearly beat Genos1. So I think Genos 2 will be better sounding than pa5x.

After about eight years this is really disappointing. Purchase due to the addition of a limited number of sounds, styles and effects. This is a copy of the previous generation. It doesn't even have a new menu.👎🏽💜🎹

the guitars are not as good as pa5x, the bass and synth voices also very weak! the weight is non existent though! the mixing of drums and styles is superb! the pa5x is too bossy out the box. love the ease of operation, and vocal harmony. genos2 is a keeper.

the drums are incredible on the genos. pa5x too heavy, needs a lot of mixing to even out the low ends.
