I just changed my diff oil last weekend. I wish I had watched the video sooner. I didn't like how short the threads were either. Thanks for the link. I have one on order for to have for my next fluid change.

It's only a matter of time with a drain plug like that. Such a silly choice by Yamaha

I kinda might have over tightened the front fill bolt. do you know if there's a better fill plug for the front diff?
@MarcM001
@MarcM001 Год назад
My 2018 Kodiak 700 has the same plug. At 340 miles I changed the diff. oils for the first time. My front diff drain plug came out stripped from the factory. I ordered an E-Z LOOK plug fixer that came with a drill bit to DRILL out the old stripped threads. Also a tap to re-cut new threads to hold the new insert. Was about to drill out the drain hole when I saw much more threads up inside. I drove 25 miles to a RV place that sells Yamaha ATV (among others). Of course after all that driving there were no mechanics on duty cuz it's Saturday. I came home and found your video. I ordered the longer plug and am just hoping the threads up inside above the 2 threads the original plug used are the same size threads. I did notice a definite change to the higher threads so fingers crossed.
@OdysseyOffroad
@OdysseyOffroad Год назад
Yep you'll be good to go with that plug no worries don't need to tap or clean out anything because the factory plug only uses those last two threads there's plenty of thread left

Good info. I've had three Grizzly's (2014, 2016 and 2021) and they have all had the tiny OEM front Diff drain bolt. I was concerned about the size and the torque specs as well, but have never had an issue with it coming loose. I install a new OEM one each time I change the oil. I think I will order one of these from Amazon for the next time!
@OdysseyOffroad

Yea its definitely an odd choice for a drain bolt. Mine was striped coming out so there was no way i was getting another oem one.

Just did the front diff change on my 23' Kodiak 450 and I think I stripped it. I even used a torque wrench and it didn't even click before it felt like it stripped. well I let it sit overnight and sure enough there's a puddle under it... wish I saw this sooner

Did the gold plug was hard to thread in the first time? Did you chase the thread with a tap before ? My 2023 came with the front diff plug stripped from factory 😢

No mine just threaded straight in no problems once it gets past the first two threads that are bad and catches the clean threads should be fine.

The fill plug? I've never heard of anybody having an issue with the fill plug but I would just buy another OEM one all you have to do is make those snug. The drain plug is the big issue.

Use the gold plug!!! The cheap Amazon plug will snap off at the head and you'll have to figure out how to dig half a bolt out of there... The metal on it is soft
@OdysseyOffroad
@OdysseyOffroad Год назад
Yeah I already have the gold plug so I'm not going to use it long term. Next time I change the fluid I'll put the gold plug in there but it was good bolt in a pinch and it served its purpose. I think as long as you don't overtorque them you're fine but since I already have the gold plug I'll swap it out next fluid change which probably be soon. I'm going on a big trip so I'd like to change them one more time they're always dirty after the initial change and the break in.
@brennenlee7715
@brennenlee7715 Год назад
@@OdysseyOffroad Not to tell you what to do, but id go for a while before you change it again... if you've already changed out the original break in oil on the front diff you should be good for quite some time after that... If im not mistaken, i think the manual says something like at 4000 miles till the next one for the front differential... Your chances of stripping it or having problems greatly increase the more you do it... If its not needed I wouldn't worry about it. I think the original oil is like more of a mineral oil to help it all mesh together properly on break in initially so its recommended to change it out soon after the break in miles are over, otherwise diff oil lasts a really long time... after your first change you shouldn't have to worry about it for a good while.
@OdysseyOffroad
@OdysseyOffroad Год назад
@@brennenlee7715 correct yeah you don't have to do it for a long time but I like to make sure it's clean lol I'm a little bit crazy. that original oil comes out so dirty I did it on my rmax also haha. We'll see I may wait till after my trip and then change them again.
