Yamaha artist Michael Tan gives a crash course on the theory behind a digital Vocoder, and then shows how to use the Montage with a microphone to create a basic vocoder effect.
Brother, this was gold!!! I was looking all over trying to see how to use vocoder on this keyboard. I just got the x8 and trying to learn about it . Got a mic and couldn't find anyone who showed how to do this. Thank you!!
Great demo. My voice still also comes through with the vocoder (though a bit quieter). I noticed your voice did not. What am I not doing correctly? Thx
@@555ontario Hmm good question. If you go to the MIXING tab, can you mute the A/D channel output? (Sorry I don't have my keyboard with me at the moment)
I have my modx for 1.5y now and never tried this. I didn't know my (really really) old mic (shure prologue 10L ) would work on this, but it does, eventually! Thanx for the video! Out of all the videos I have watched, one for vocoder was not included, lol!
Thanks mate. Good overview. It doesn’t in any way pitch track the source, does it? I made a really fun patch on the Nord Modular G2 with a more experimental approach, where both the keyboard and the singer can change the pitch, where the singer is setting the root key in real-time, and instead manipulate autotune rather than formant vocoder. I wish I could reproduce that here too. In order to produce the most natural sounding voice, which waveform would you be using?
In the setup described above, no, it doesn't measure the pitch of the source, just the formant shape. And I'm not sure about the most natural sounding patch, I'd guess some kind of vocal synth lead or something? Or maybe a reed instrument? I'll have to have a play!
Hey Michael. that video is simply awesome. I got the montage 8 and I was configuring the settings the other day to match what you've shown here. now I have one problem. in your video you sing into the microphone and only the vocoder effect can be heard. in my case I hear both. the original voice and the vocoder sound. did I miss any specific point here or what am I doing wrong? please if anyone knows how to avoid this let me know. thanks in advance
Why is my microphone not working? There is only noise that i can hear, but microphone does not pick up signal.. i have the ad input set to MIC and in common settings i have input set to L Mono, what is wrong? please help...
They're all custom performances that I made for a tour I did last year... mostly using new (Montage) sounds but some of them used Motif voices in them!
Michael Tan Thanks. For a while I was waffling between buying a Kronos vs a Montage (or possibly a Jupiter 80). For a number of different reasons, I'm pretty much sold on the Montage, but I play in an '80s cover band and it would be nice not to have to recreate every sound from scratch.
The built-in FM synthesiser is pretty cool for a lot of iconic sounds. I did a Whitney tribute gig recently and the sounds are spot on. Can take some time to program them though.
How do you sing with auto tune I tried to sing with vocoder but I only want vocoder I just want my voice but to sing in tune by using the vocoder how do i do that I own a Yamaha genos.i just want my own voice to sing in tune auto tune
Just got a MODX, and one the things I was looking for was a Vocoder. I had a MicroKorg in past and with that it’s literally plug n play, with preset vocoder patches . The MODX you have to create/setup sounds . 🥵
@@MichaelTanMusic Thanks for replying i tried yesterday it does work but what I've noticed is the output or the gain is really low i can't hear the voice. I've a modx
that’s a good question... i would guess not, unless you re-configure the TRRS mini jack to isolate the microphone component. Or possibly get a splitter / adapter? might need some experimenting.
@@MichaelTanMusic I'm bleeding patience profusely. Are you hearing the vocoder performance through the headset? I'm seeing the equalizer bar fluctuate with voice, but no sound output. I'm a pathetic bastard! haha
The video is good and I have no complaints about the author of this video. But Yamaha has one complaint. In Montage, as in the entire Motif line, there is the worst vocoder on planet earth! I say this because I know both Motif and Montage and have it. And besides them, I had synths from different companies, where I was convinced that Yamaha is the most stupid company that does not spend time developing new ideas or improving existing functions. Korg R3 has the best vocoder for little money
1.34 And to keep it simple, you've already bored 99% of the worlds population, anyone looking at this wants to know what it sounds like, but you just keep talking omg. on a positive it sounds coooooollllll
@@MichaelTanMusicI enjoyed your video and wasn't board and he shouldn't speak for the rest of the population. All he has to do is use the little arrow keys to move the video forward and backwards. Enjoyed the video but why do Yamaha make it so complicated when all you want to do is use a vocoder not launch a NASA shuttle?
@@darrenhirst9900 Well that's because the Montage is an absolute BEAST. You know he kept it simple in this video tutorial for a reason right? I have a Montage, and I can tell you, the stuff you can do with it is INSANE. You're not going to see videos of people fully utilizing this monster until 5-10 possibly 15 years later, because the possibilities are endless. You can literally add and combine filters, use any sound as your basis for your Vocoder, can you imagine what would happen if you used more than ONE channel? I'm telling you...this thing is an absolute MONSTER.
