Yeah it’s a great bike, even the valve adjustment isn’t to hard. The ABS by pass mod is my favorite thing I did to it.

Agree with all you’ve said here Richard, I had to fit cruise to this earlier model. The 2015 also has another balancer I believe to smooth it out a bit. Only KPH here in Aus but I didn’t realise they had the switch option or maybe that’s only in the later model. Cheers mate.

It’s big, heavy, powerful, fast etc etc.Slowly but surely it all comes together to the extent that you don’t even think about it’s size, there were a lot of maneuvers that unfortunately I couldn’t show on camera but let’s just say this can be a very exiting bike to ride. Sadly many reviews I’ve seen see reviewers passing opinion on bikes after spending five minutes riding them, I guess that’s better than nothing but I believe you need to live with the bike/car for at least a week to honestly pass opinion on it. Hi, yes the Tenere is a great bike for long travel. Maybe get a slightly newer version with the cruise control, this 2010 doesn’t come standard with cruise I fitted it. Cheers

I purchased a used 2017 ES model and I can honestly say it’s been the most comfortable bike I’ve owned. It literally does everything a adventure bike is supposed to do. You will not regret it mate 👍👍

Yes plenty of room here in Aus for adventures for sure, glad you enjoyed the video. Take your time getting used to the Tenere, she’s a big bike. Probably not what I would recommend if you’re just getting back into riding to be honest but if you already have experience just spend plenty of hours getting the feel, it can be a monster if you let it. On the other hand it can be just a just like any other big bike if you’re gentle with the right hand. Enjoy your adventures, I’m a bit jealous I’d love to do that ride. cheers.

Great stuff and yes I agree with your comments both of the Tenere and your part of the world, was lucky enough to play in sand sand there on a DT400 back in 79. It was for the release of the then new 400 two banger, it was in if I recall correctly the dry lake area? (holey moley 44 years ago, now I feel old) Loved it so much I came back to Aus and bought one.Ride safe in that lovely part of the world and thanks for the comment , cheers mate.

@@standupmoto as an update, I just purchased a '24 S10. Enjoying the break-in and excited about getting some of the kits for it, my wallet is not pleased though.

Top stuff, you’ll love it. The 24 is a well sorted bike, the addition of cruise & and extra balancer (not in the earlier models) makes a great bike even better. Enjoy 👍

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review and yes the new generation of adventure bikes are extremely expensive. I guess only time will tell re their longevity, not to mention the array of electronics on them nowadays.

Thanks glad you enjoyed the video, I also had the KLR some years ago. The Tenere is a whole new experience in long distance travel, it eats up the miles with ease and seems to get a lot of attention from other adventure riders . You just can’t wait to get back on and ride further, also long steep inclines & head wind issues are a thing of the past with the ST. It doesn’t matter how loaded you are , 1 or 2 up it just blasts past. Try to get yourself a couple of hours on one if you can before you commit but be prepared to fall in love. cheers

I may have to try to find one to test ride. I have a GW for 2up and enjoy the KLR for sgl gravel travel, motocamping and getting to my fave fishing spots with the occasional 2up ride. But I could see the ST doing all of that and still take on some decent 2up hwy riding trips with some considerable comfort. 🤔

Hi Derek, ouch! I’ve not heard of that but have heard of cracking the crankcase when a chain lets go or locking the rear wheel at the wrong time. Enjoy your ST, they are a great machine & trouble free if you keep good oil in her. Just get used to the bike before you get too spirited, they (like any bike) can bite and turn off that traction control on the dirt, you can just steer these with the back wheel. It certainly gets the adrenaline flowing then just sit back like you’re on a cruiser on the hwy, doesn’t get much better that that. Cheers.

Yes Dan we have very similar circumstances & probably unique to yours and my part of the world. Both animals move fast appear from nowhere it seems and have two hundred plus pounds on their side.

Top stuff Steph, keep good fully syn oil in it and change it & the filter every 5000k or 3000 mls (not sure where you are) and it’ll last you a long time. Get used to smiling though, because when you open the tap you just can’t get the smile off your face. Cheers 👍

Yes supply is still an issue with many brands but things are starting to improve.

Great stuff, you’ll love it. The latest as you already know comes with the cruise std and a few other refinements, I know there are a lot of heavy weight adventure bikes out there . Some with more HP some with more high performance suspension etc etc , however I doubt very much that there are many with the Yamaha longevity & reliability and as easy to live with.Congrats on your purchase.

@@standupmoto thanks mate, I had my heart set on a KTM 1290 super adventure S, but after taking the Super Tenere for an hour test ride, I went back and sat on the KTM & realised it wasn't for me, plus the service costs on the Yamaha are half the price. Keep those reviews coming.

Thanks Jaco glad you enjoyed the video mate, the Tenere is a big bike as a first adventure bike but I’m assuming your coming from larger capacity road bikes. If your used to smaller capacity bikes I’d go with a 650 or similar for a while to get used to this style of bike, you’ll know what’s right for you. Service costs, I do my own servicing but I’d assume the Yam would be in line with most twin cylinder Japanese bikes. This is an older bike and nothing is to hard to do really, as far as oil (motor & diff) they are easy and accessible including the filters (air oil fuel). Brake fluid change is simple, no special tools really, Pop in a set of platinum plugs and they’ll never need doing again. I guess the only tricky one is the valve clearance but if they’ve been done once or twice in there life according to the service records you’ll probably never have to do them. Seriously this is an easy bike to own. hope this helps mate, cheers.

However, with the local prices in South Africa of the Super Tenere compared to 600 to 800 cc bikes, it is a no brainer to go for the larger bike with more features for the same prices as a smaller bike. However, it is a bigger horse ... I do not plan to go off-road straightaway, but i would love to go touring with other riders. But getting very good advice from very experienced and veteran riders is priceless. Thank you again.

Hi Phil glad you enjoyed the video, yes the valve service is a pain but on the positive side after one of these has done 30 k they don’t seem to vary. You pick a crappie riding day and get it done (if it needs doing) .If you ride one be prepared to buy it because you’ll fall in love with it, I came across a guy recently with a 10 model with road tyres on it, he’d had it since new and never been off rd. He just loved the ride so much he used it as a road bike from the beginning. cheers mate.

Similar situation here, I had the GS then the Tenere. Reliability was a factor in my decision making also, the ST has never faulted.

Thanks Adrian glad you enjoyed the video, the 2018 model has cruise as std (I had to fit it to the 2010) it also has an updated instrument panel. I would suggest see if your friend will let you have the bike for a couple of hours and do a decent ride to feel the bike, that’s what I did back when I got mine. My GS was a great bike but I just found the Tenere to be a bit more agile for my style of riding in the terrain I ride, we are spoilt for choice nowadays and it’s a reasonable outlay so find the bike that fits and go with it I’d say. Gday William, thanks for the kind words re my review but sad to hear you’ve had this issue. Honestly I’ve never heard of this, even with sidecars fitted. I do know a chap here in Aus that had a total clutch failure on his new Africa Twin (new to him, 2 years old) after only a very short time of ownership. As it turned out the previous owner had serviced the bike and put the wrong oil in it, this was creating slip in top gear. Not enough to notice while riding at speed with the wind & road noise but under load in the ranges it was getting hotter and hotter until it failed. Not saying this is what happened in your case but generally the ST is pretty well trouble free, and some of them have been to hell and back. I guess they are starting to get old but looked after they shouldn’t fail, hope this helps.

Wear a tear part...especially if the previous owner was a complete mong...can happen with any bike...sounds like motorcycles aren't for you?

Hi Chris yes I set the bike up really soft nowadays when I’m doing distance on corrugations , I just find it fatigues me less. I’m 60 now and the joints tend to relay 48 years of riding /racing far more than they used to. Cheers.

@@DJPTEXAS It is a must for the engine ECU but you are right. This issue is for the old model like mine. The newer models are equipped with regular air temperature. I notice that the sensor is the same as my 2022 MT09 SP. I know this because I Tuned the engine and of course I had to take in account engine air temp/air density.

You Sir have a problem, first world one I might add but still a problem. All 3 you have on your list are great bikes with a similar purpose, so let’s break it down. The GSA is a wonderful bike with more features than you can throw a stick at (Aussie saying) also stylish classy purposeful with heaps of grunt , I have an old RT at the moment and previously had an early GS so I do like my Beemers . The Tiger is a good mount also, well featured (a bit down on fuel capacity by memory) and that triple is just so sweet and I owned a Bonnie and loved it, I have a triple in my Spyder and it’s just such a sweet motor . And last but not least the mighty Tenere which you’ve seen my review so I probably don’t need to say anymore, all of these bikes have cruise and are made for a purpose. Something to take on board though is they are all tall & heavy as is of course your K1600 but on that you have reverse ( Gods gift to heavy motorcycles) . If I had to narrow it down it would be between the GSA & the mighty Tenere because of their longevity and availability of accessories etc but after that your on your own I’m afraid, I’d love to hear which way you go. Iv only ridden the 21 we haven’t seen the 22 Downunder yet, is the 22 a Thai built machine? Not that it probably matters nowadays with things being built all over the world, it’s just that I’ve had such a good run over the years with Japanese & German built bikes with reliability and accessories that I tend to lean towards them.

Yes it’s been a while for sure, the later versions have cruise & an additional counter balancer , more nowadays dash but very little else. I have heard a 1250 complete new version is in the wind for 2023, supposedly looking like a big brother to the 700.

Hi, no it’s not a beginners motorcycle. This is a bike that you work your way up to after many years of riding and gaining experience on smaller more manageable machines. I would recommend for a new rider starting with a 250 cc and working your way up with larger capacity motorcycles until you eventually get to the point where you are ready for bikes like the one in this review. Taking a riding course is also a great idea, it teaches techniques, safety and helps you decide what type of bike would suit your needs.

Gday Mike, hard call because they are both great bikes. I’ve had the GS albeit an earlier model and enjoyed it, I ride with & have ridden some later GS’s and they perform very well but extremely heavy on sand or dirt. If the majority of your riding is sealed & unsealed roads I’d probably lean towards the BM purely due to its comfort and tech, if it’s more tight of rd stuff probably the Yam. If your talking ten year old then definitely the Tenere but if your talking within the last few years you’ll have to toss a coin. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. Mostly paved roads 2 up with very occasional gravel and dirt roads there isn't many where I live. It would be a used bmw 2014 or newer due to the wet clutch. Or yamaha 2014 or newer due to the added features. E.s model.

Geeees Mike, yep you’re in a bind here. I guess look at what each bike has to offer, I’ve found for long hauls cruise is a must. Once upon a time I wouldn’t have thought so but nowadays I love it, heated grips are great also if your a winter rider like me. I sometimes knock out 800 to 1 k Kms in a day so comfort-wind protection & range is also important, let me know which way you go. Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with either so long as you get a genuine bike. Cheers.

I currently own a 2014 kawasaki concours 14 it has 100k miles on it. Love it but it's a death trap on gravel roads. Wife and I have ridden it all over the usa and a little bit in Canada. The bike has never let me down except if you wanna see something cool down this long dirt/gravel road. I want a bike that will go down any road comfortably. And reliable transportation.
