Yamaha Vino 125 Starter Clutch Replacement

I needed to put a new starter clutch in my scooter. When it was hot or had been running a while, my scooter wouldn't start without using the kickstarter. It would just make noise, or grinding.
I'm totally an amateur. I just need my scooter to run. take everything I say with a grain of salt.
I hope this video helps someone!

Clarifications and Corrections: This is an extremely helpful video, first. But it could have used an edit to correct a few things that could lead to headaches, including one missed maintenance step and one major dis-assembly that goes too far for most situations. I’ve outlined a few places where more information is helpful and to make his vocabulary mesh with actual Yamaha part names. Clarifications: 14:13: “First the nut comes off then there’s a - this washer” which he later calls “big thick guy.” That’s the one-way clutch on Yamaha parts fiches. The next part, a dished disc with “fins” visible is the fixed sheave. 15:13: The “small ring” he takes off next is a spacer between that fixed sheave and the next smooth dished part, the “primary sliding sheave.” (Some tuners get rid of this spacer to bring the sheaves closer, allegedly to alter the position of the belt and get more start-up torque.) 15:40: MISSED MAINTENANCE ITEM: “There’s a small cone that you have to need to grab and pull with you…because it is a P-I-A to figure out how to get all this back in there.” No, it’s not, but yes, take it out whole. But you MUST lift off that rusty cam (that he calls ‘cone,’), which serves as a back cover of the sliding sheave. It holds weighted rollers that he mentions (later, he becomes confused about how to put them back). Be VERY diligent about recording their orientation in their tracks of the sheave before removing them to inspect them for any flat spots. These rollers get ‘hurled’ outward by centrifugal force as the sheave spins, and it’s crucial that they do so smoothly and evenly. Look for flat spots on their surface and if they have any sign of that, Replace them for about $10 (or if you’re a tuner, get custom ones that are slightly lighter and alter how and when the sheave grabs the belt.). Clean the sheave and cam and make sure there are no burrs, pits, etc. that could affect the roll of these weights. (Put the weights in the sheave and tilt the part and you’ll see how they roll out to the edge) OVERKILL?: 16:16: “There’s two parts to this part and you want to buy them together” is not quite reight. You can get them separately, though many parts outlets sell them together as one "assembly." “This part” is the problematic Starter Clutch that is the goal of this repair. The one behind it is the Starter Wheel (right now locked in place by the idler wheel). Unless the Starter Wheel has stripped or broken teeth or a pronounced wobble, it’s probably just fine. It’s much stronger than the clutch assembly, so when push comes to shove, it’s the clutch that fails, not this heavy wheel. His looks factory new. So, save the $$ here and don't risk stripping bolts to remove the idler gear to get at the starter wheel. (Caveat: You may HAVE to buy the clutch/starter wheel together from some parts outlets. If so, your call on whether to use only one part of it or go ahead and pull the starter wheel by pulling off the idler wheel. Those bolts are TIGHT and easily stripped). STOP/PAUSE DISASSEMBLY and turn your attention to the starter clutch itself. 16:27: “This thing - there’s the problem, there” YES. But it’s worth freezing this frame to take a close look because he moves on quickly in his quest for the starter wheel. This is a spring-roller clutch, made to allow movement one way, but impede it in the other. That barrel roller that falls out? It’s supposed to spring back and forth to either allow or impeed the clutch's rotation. It’s worth looking carefully at these three spring mechanisms on the interior ring of the clutch assembly. Yours may not be so bad that the barrel falls out, but you may find that one or more of the barrels/rollers gets stuck and doesn’t spring back into place and/or is heavily scored. Do this to confirm that this was your problem part. (You also can remove them, clean and dry lube them, and see if that solves the problem). See: : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nRVaVJ4xx7s.html WHILE YOU”RE HERE: You’ve done this much labor, so it’s really worth looking at the other side of the belt drive, the clutch or ‘clutch carrier assembly.’ Removal is basically two (tight) nuts, the innermost of which is 1.75 inches wide or wider (I think about 41 mm). They’re both stubborn, but it’s worth seeing how much surface you have left on your clutch, and/or replacing it before putting the drive side of your bike back together again. It’s the most expensive part, around $112, but if it fails, you basically are doing all this disassembly again, and buying another gasket probably.

Great video - saved me a lot of time. Just be sure to put the big case gasket in place BEFORE putting the belt on the pulleys!
@geoffreymohan4698
@geoffreymohan4698 3 года назад
On my Vino 125 ('06) this gasket had a vertical span about mid-way that just lies over empty space, roughly half-way between the crank sheaves and wheel sheaves. Is this because it's the same gasket at the other side of the crankcase, which has a slightly different set of surfaces? It otherwise is dead perfect for all the outer surfaces and holes. It just has an extra vertical 'leg' across it.

Sorry, I think I missed somewhere, What year is the Vino.? overall, for the clutch replacement vin. little edit here and there, chop snip. there or so, would be perfect, thanks for sharing ..If you so happen to inspect your belt remember it is directional, arrows point to towards variator. if warn bad, replace or just reference your belt slopping.

Lay your scoot on the right side on the lawn and no need to deal with any oil what so ever! Just be careful to not get any debris in the 2 ports that are revealed once you remove the clutch cover.

Yikes. Most mechanics advise to just lean the bike away from you, or just drain the oil first and replace it when you're done. Any position that allows anything to fall into the crankcase is a pretty risky idea.

Was your starter motor spinning the drive belt at the time of the problem? My Riva is having issues starting (initially I thought it was the Bendix, but the starter motor spins the belt, so I'm not sure now..?)
@jacoblawson
@jacoblawson 4 года назад
the starter (with no issues) would spin the starter clutch. The failure point was right at the starter clutch. It would not engage, therefore nothing beyond the starter clutch would spin or move. The riva is a different beast. Good luck

Just got one of these Vino scooters, a late 2001. It has the same starter whine as in the vid but does it when it's cold and/or hot start attempt which it just spins. Starts on a kick start. So, if it spins with this whine, it's the starter clutch and not the starter? Shoulda watched this vid b4 I went and bought a starter motor assy.

Take my advice with a grain of salt. I’m not an expert. The starter is easy to check, just unbolt the two bolts, pull it out, and make sure wires are still attached and probably needs grounded or something like that..... (can see from the right side of the bike) and check if it spins. I should make a video on that too. My gut tells me if it sounds exactly the same as my sound, it might be your starter clutch, a lot of them seem to fail. Check your starter. Message me if you have more problems checking it,

@@jacoblawson I changed out the starter. It's on top but there are 2 screws attaching it to the motor and the bottom screw is next to impossible aka a crummy engineering design. Short story is just drop the muffler off the bike, take off the rear wheel and save yourself a lot of time fussing over the bottom screw on the starter. btw it still spins so it must be a starter clutch.
@jacoblawson
@jacoblawson 3 года назад
@@robertmalone4283 good luck on the starter clutch change. There’s one on eBay “like new” it looks like. It’s not a hard task, get a good variator nut removal tool, or impact wrench and good luck! Be patient I believe in you!

Vino 125 wasn't introduced to the US until 2005. If your's is a 2001, it must be a Vino 50 and possibly be different from the 125.

You're talking about whether the 'starter' featured in this video or the 'starting motor' is bad, I assume? The starter motor kinda looks like a Dremel on steroids. I believe you can just disconnect and pull the starting motor off from the top/seat side of the bike - a completely separate area - and check whether the spindle gear is stripped or some other aspect of this electric motor is broaken. Usually you can hear this stripping sound, with no turnover of the crank evident. It's a much different sound than what Jacob shows at the beginning of the video. Also, Jacob's problem usually manifests (sporadically at first, perpetually after a while) when you re-start the moto, say, after you parked it at the market and are now going home. The engine is 'warm,' in other words, not a 'cold' start.

yes i fixed the issue. The riva 125 might have a component called a Bendix gear, which is a different component, but same idea. I do not have the scooter so i cannot tell, but if you look up "Yamaha Riva Starter Wizz" you will find another helpful video

you can purchase a starter. I was able to get the starter out by unscrewing two bolts that hold it on, and extracting it from the Right side wheelwell of the bike. i dont have time to make a video on it, but good luck.
