I have a 2009 as well that’s been leaking! Been scared to dig in because I’m not a mechanic, but this gives me some confidence! Dealer quoted $700+ to do a carb kit 😅
Hi @PatrickHawkins, this is definitely a job you can do yourself, so go for it! As I mentioned in the video you definitely need a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdriver to get the 'phillips' head machine screws removed so as to remove the float bowl. Wow, $700 is crazy, and a dang good reason to give it a shot. Working on bikes is rewarding and there's lot of help out on the internet if you need help or get stuck. Take pictures as you go, and just go for it. But don't even try a regular screwdriver on those carbs. Invest a few dollars and buy a Vessel brand or other reputable brand of JIS. Hope this helps and best of luck!
@@MadTinkerman I did not take your advice and get the JIS screwdriver… this little eight screw project turned into a whole thing 😂 Had to take the whole carb out just to get to the bottom right corner screw to cut a slot in it… 2 nights and a day 😂 But got it back together, fixed the gas leak! Seems to have developed an issue with airflow when rev-ing the engine, but runs up the highway just fine 🤷♂️ The seat is wobblier than I remember, I see a hole to put in a bolt, but I don’t remember taking one out nor do I see it anywhere 😂
Hey @PatrickHawkins sorry to hear you had a bit of a pain with those JIS machine screws holding the float bowl on, but just know you are not the only one. They strip so easy just about everybody has had it happen to them. That said, great to hear you persevered, took the carbs off, and got 'er done saving yourself $700 bucks!! Well done!! You'll enjoy the bike even more now that you've worked on it yourself. Keep the rubber side down :) !!
Hey thanks Peter. It's a great reminder to always check the most obvious stuff first. Glad it turned out to be so simple, but should have figured it out sooner :) Cheers!
Thanks. Off course I stripped one screw on each carb, even with good tools. Insane crap. But it looked on the video like you forgot to fit the airbox on to the carbs? (I'm having trouble with that now, so was looking closely for that 😅)
Hi @aze2099 my bike is mostly original, but the airbox has been modified to enable the use of cone shaped K&N air filters, so that's why you didn't se me fitting the airbox. I really appreciate you watching the video and your comment! If you haven't done so already, please subscribe! I really appreciate it! Cheers
@MadTinkerman AND it was the sealing for me as well! Couldn't ger original ones but adding RTV seemes to have done the trick. So really grateful for this video, I don't think I would've thought about that as they looked pretty nice.
That's interesting that you had the same problem with leaky bowl gaskets. I guess the rubber just deteriorates over time. I was quite surprised that was the issue. Glad to hear RTV worked for you. I got my carb gaskets off of Amazon and they were very reasonable and work well. Just type in this search into Amazon "vstar 650 carburetor bowl gaskets" Hopefully they don't leak again, but if they do, hope this helps. Cheers.
Hi @issacreyes6428 that's a great add! Syncing the carbs after carb work is always a good idea, and especially if you are changing jets or have had any reason to take the carbs apart. I didn't do that in this video, but may do a video in the future showing how that can be done easily. I have my own carb sync contraption for that purpose made out of an old yardstick, clear plastic tubing and two stroke motor oil :) I should show how that works in another video. Thanks again for your comment!
Hi @Fundaykidzz, glad to hear you liked the video! I have two chainsaws hanging up there, so not too sure which of them you were looking at. I actually have videos of both of them running. The first is a David Bradley 360 Gear driven model that has two bars: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IP2EkxqwtMQ.html And the second one is a 1946 Power Machinery chainsaw made in Vancouver: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WM3cHE-ko2w.html Please check them out and let me know what you think by leaving a comment on those videos. I reply to all comments and really appreciate the feedback. If you haven't already, please subscribe and share the video links with others. Really appreciate it.
