This was the 3rd morning of a 10 Day Trek in the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India (14,000 feet elevation, freezing outside, waterfalls all around me). I have learned many skills in my life: gardening, fitness, foreign language, vegan food, kung fu, and of course tai chi. I am so glad I have learned and continue to practice Chinese Tai Chi Chuan because it is the perfect activity for Self Defense but also to ALIGN YOU WITH NATURES BALANCE! I can see there's a lot of hate for you about your martial arts, and although I can see why, I'm not here to offer you hate, but rather to offer some constructive criticism. If you have a passion for martial arts, I think that's great, and I encourage you to follow that passion. But if you truly care about getting good at martial arts, you should consider this criticism and try to improve. The first step of improvement is to accept where you're at, and it's clear there are some major flaws in your technique from the perspective of an internal martial artist like myself. The first thing I'd like to mention, is that tai'chi is an internal martial art. This means that you want to move your body with your internal energy, using as little muscular tension as possible. It's clear that you are very stiff and using a lot of muscular force in your movements. I would try using much higher stances until you're able to sink into the kua, then you can get gradually deeper as you relinquish your tension and rely on structure. Which brings me to my second point, which is to tuck the tailbone in and sink into the kua. This will allow you to make an energetic connection to the earth, and will add a lot of power and health benefits to your practice. Also, sinking the sternum and pushing the chin back will help energy to rise up the back and allow energy to flow down from the head to the dan tien without getting congested in the heart area. There are several other structural improvements you could make, but these are the most important. Standing in a horse stance (a tall horse stance would be best for you at your level) and holding your arms as if you were holding a tree for as long as you can (working up to at least 30min+) will help significantly in improving your structure. The second main point I want to talk about, is that all movement should start from the lower dan tien. When one part of the body moves, all parts of the body move. When one part stops, all parts stop. The body should move as a single coordinated unit, with the movement originating in the dan tien. The power comes from the earth, is controlled by the waist, and takes shape in the arms and hands. You should keep awareness in the dan tien at all times, and simply have the intention of what you want to do with your mind in the dan tien while staying as relaxed as possible, and the chi will move the body. If you can keep awareness in the lower dan tien, the heart, and the brain in the area of the pineal gland simultaneously (connecting the 3 dan tiens), that's even better. It will help you develop Yi, as it's called in Chinese. I hope you take into consideration what I mentioned, and don't let your ego prevent you from being open to advice. I guarantee that if you implement what I talked about into your tai'chi, it will improve significantly. I wish you well on your martial arts endeavors.

I agree with everything you mentioned here. These are the fundamentals that my teachers keep reminding me of. Most people who practice Tai Chi are not even aware that Tai Chi is a form of "internal martial art", which places particular emphasis on what goes on inside your body - breathing, alignment of the kua, coordination of the entire body with the lower dan tien, flow of energy (chi) and yi (mindfulness), moving your limbs with your white tissues and not just the musscles etc. All these qualities can only be developed through slow (but thorough) practice in as sung state (releasing, not merely being supple and collapsed). Thanks again for these essential points
@TheDecdec9

Solid and sound advice that should be followed by anyone practising internal martial arts. You obviously understand the principles very well. Unfortunately, the ego is strong in this one...! Many like you have kindly tried to advise him without being rude or aggressive, only to be shot down and prompted to endeavour in their own practise. I do not think convincing a self proclaimed multi master of their weak points is possible unfortunately buddy.....

Love your Tai Chi videos... I’ve been doing 3 per week plus walking and have gotten in so much better shape in the last 3 months (plus bonus, lost over 25 pounds). I would love a 30 minute Tai Chi video from you! I combine the ones you have to make my routines longer, but inevitably end up repeating moves... I’d love to learn some new ones! Hope all is peaceful and well in your corner of the world.

Great video Jake! I learned the Simplified Yang style form (8 and 12 movement forms) from Sifu Bill Adams who studied under Bow Sim Mark. I've seen so many different versions of the form, but no matter which one you train in, the benefits are amazing! Thanks for posting!
@sanleychinna5145
@sanleychinna5145 5 лет назад
You are wrong about the forms, I have practised Tai Chi for years, what is demonstrated here is not Tai Chi. It is a Shaolin-do’s copy of Tai Chi, which is a bogus art form. You see, I happen to meet Bow Sim Mark as a young child in China many years ago when she was studying Wushu. I do not think she would accept this fraudster’s demonstration as Tai Chi. No Tai Chi and Wushu Association in China would endorse this man. I mean, I am happy to contact the Tai Chi Association to get their opinion. Would that help?!
@kputala
@kputala 5 лет назад
You mis-read my post. I did not say that this form was what Bow Sim Mark teaches or endorses. I did not say that this form is what I have seen or been taught as the Yang style Tai Chi form. I said that I was taught the simplified short forms and that the instructor I learned them from was a student of Bow Sim Mark. Read the post again.

I am a Tai Chi novice, and from what I have seen and know of the Yang style long form, this is not it, but I cannot say it isn't Tai Chi at all, because I am not qualified. The movements have the aesthetics of Tai Chi and there is no doubting the beauty of the country and surroundings he is in, hence my praise for the video. I specifically did not comment on the accuracy of the form because I am a novice. If it was an art I have in-depth knowledge of I would have. Which style Tai Chi do you practice?

@RealKungFu
@RealKungFu 5 лет назад
Tai Chi is a style of Kung Fu! I was a teen when I started!
@Das_Pepe
@Das_Pepe 5 лет назад
Taiji is useful for selfdefense. But only as an addition. Especially the modernised pampered styles like most yang styles are nothing more but dances. Taijiquán has some good techniques but the training methods are just bad. Sure, if you can’t do it slow you can’t do it fast. But you only can fight like you train. You you have to 1. run forms fast. 2. train with a partner for fighting adaptations. 3. train under pressure. Therefore you could sparr or do a hard workout and then do your Taijiquán techniques. If they are sloppy then, they are useless. If you manage to stay smooth, even under pressure you’re good and might be able to use it for self defense. But nothing can guarantee it. Taiji is good. But only if you don’t let it pamper you and keep fit. A slow dance doesn’t equal a good workout.
@Iamsidewalker
@Iamsidewalker 5 лет назад
Das Pepe thank for your good explanation! I understand I need to be able to do the dance in order to be a good “fighter” in the sense of self defense? And when I see a kong fu school, they’ll also do some Thai chi ?
@Das_Pepe
@Das_Pepe 5 лет назад
Iamsidewalker Not exactly. Just because you can do the form doesn’t mean you’re a good fighter. The form is just a method to train. It’s good for muscle memory. But this is a longterm process. It shouldn’t be the only training method you use. There are people who can run a form flawlessly but have no idea how to fight. That’s the case with the most Taiji practitioners because the form is the core of their training but it shouldn’t be. Not every Gong Fu school practises Taijiquán. Not every restaurant has pizza. Taiji is just a style and if your school focuses on other styles they won’t train Taijiquán.

I come to realised Jake Mace is a copycat martial artist with bad forms. His forms are learned from videos and books, which is why they incorrect and why he does not fully or really understand it. He is really just a copycat, a star-war sabre copycat, who think he is deserving of respect from genuine martial artists. Jake Mace you are just a copycat and a bogus man.

Yes well said. Looks like he learned from video or books. It's like you can recognize a few postures if you try but it's all mixed up with with lots of added garbage..

Talk to Jesse Enkamp. Tell him to make more videos cuz, I already lost one person I looked up to in life. I don't want to lose another.

Someone I looked up to you and joined the army two to three years ago. He was one of my martial arts instructors. Jesse enkamp hasn't been posting videos for a little over 3 weeks now. Just have her he got done with his Karate Nerd in Okinawa series, the second season. I'm worried he might not be posting videos anymore. Also, there are multiple people I look up to. He's one of them.
