^^^Precisely this! They weren't because of this fantasyland thinking the Americans have about permanent hegemony everywhere. We want to balkanize Russia and then rape it for all it has. Look at what we've done everywhere else. We are in Syria now pillaging it for its oil. 125bn stolen so far and counting. Russia's strategic resources are well documented. They have tremendous amounts of strategic resources. From metals, energy, etc. Everything we want. And we will stop at nothing to get it. But just like Hitler tried it probably won't work. In the nuclear age this could mean apocalypse of course but the Russians have proven I think that they won't be dictated to by Europeans. The criminals that have seized Washington on the other hand are used to getting their way. I mean they've been virtually unopposed since the 90s. And now it's a case of lesser intellect and spoiled rotten. Like a toddler we expect that you do as we say when we say it. If you don't we lose our shit completely. And this is what's playing out now. Petty criminal petulance and bad temper. These people won't stop until someone antes up and decided to have a go at Washington. When bombs start exploding on American soil that's when the Americans will start waking up. Sadly by then it will probably be too late.

If I were Putin - I would have worked on my own country - increasing wealth of the citizenry, raising health and education of citizenry; made Russia the model that Ukraine and every bordering state would want to follow. Why worry about NATO if you have committed friends? Instead, Putin has made Russia a pariah, destroyed Russia's economy, and sacrificed a generation of young Russian men - all to no achievement. Not so much Alexander as Kaiser Wilhelm. NOW Russia has to worry about NATO (and the Chinese, and the Indians, and anybody else with a shared border and an army). NOW Russia has an 'army' with little equipment, little training, and lots of corpses. NOW Russia has a committed anti-Russian state along their southern border, and an alarmed and well-armed state along their north-western border (Russia invading a country, Russia killing people, Russia committing war crimes - all tends to make one a committed anti-Russian).

The cold war is over and the USSR lost, because it was a crummy system. Who is Putin to "warn" about anything? He's the dictator of Russia. No more no less. Same middling economic status as Canada (but with a crapload of nukes..) so what's that say? The eastern European countries - democracies - prefer to be aligned with the West after years of being behind that black and white iron curtain. Maybe moreso after Putin's political opponents fell out of windows, were poisoned, jailed or shot. Likewise with Ukraine, too bad about the base in Crimea.. Also this idea seems to be that Nato is ever expanding (not on their invitation - it's the countries' wishes) while ignoring that Russia also has bases all over the place, and outside its borders.

Taking the U.S. made nuclear missiles out of the countries surrounding Russia. Promising Ukraine will not enter NATO. Promising to not expand NATO further. Basically make concessions on the things that will not negatively impact the Ukrainian people, or the sovereignty of the Ukrainian state. This stuff would not even impact European people negatively. It will only hurt the western elites. They can't have that, so the people must suffer. Yes, you can turn this around, and Putin does something similar. That is exactly Yanis' point. It goes both ways. The west nor Russia are the good guys. There is just elitist infighting, and the people (of Ukraine, of Russia, of the rest of Europe) suffer, and must be brainwashed to believe that it's in their own interest to oppose the elite of the other side (something that is more succesful in the west than in Russia).

I think he's wrong: Putin, bare of an alternative to watching the geostrategic and economic beginning of the end of the Russian Federation (with the crucial lynch pin to such a progression being the "western" governance over Crimea) had indeed no choice as to militarily preempt the western sponsored, by then a 15 year long financial, political and since 2014 military preparation of Ukraine to enable the west to (re-)gain governance over Crimea... There was actually no choice and the opposite claim is the actual short-sighted rubbish, Yannis (&Co.) ☝️

They also had the right to speak Russian curtailed. Several times since Ukrainian independence in 1991, Donbas and Crimea expressed a wish for greater autonomy from central government.

While world power games certainly are at play, it would be very hard for Putin to politically survive had he allowed Russians in the Donbass to be slaughtered by Ukraine. I feel it's possible to overstate U.S.control of Europe. Certainly one leader would fear going against the consensus set by the rest. But that's true of any lone component of a group. Doesn't change the fact that there is indeed a consensus among European ruling classes to coordinate with the U.S. in imperialist projects and to gain from such projects. Hence why little Britain still controls more than half the world's wealth.

They never backed down from their demands, they didn't even proposed a cease fire for the duration of the early negotiations and made the initial talks be held in Belarus! The talks ended after the horrors of Bucha, Irpin and all the other towns were revealed. RE shelling of Donbas: It was mostly the russian proxy forces and the ru army itself who violated every single cease fire agreed in both minsk agreements.

The peoples of Donbas chose "self-determination" over the USA/NATO installed Kiev gov't. Kiev bombed them for it. Donbas asked for Russian assistance. Russia 'recognized' their independent 'states' and entered BY INVITATION of the people of Donbas, who then voted to join the Russian Federation. Russia accepted their union. Ever heard of Kosovo? They 'joined' NATO...

Good to see Varoufakis squirming a bit and adjusting his tune on Ukraine by "clarifying" his otherwise full alignment on Putin's rhetoric on the invasion of Ukraine. Like other left-wing populists (eg, Mélenchon in France) who also share his views that this invasion was somehow triggered by some fabled US/NATO aggressive stance, he just can't let go. His "clarification" is purely rhetorical: Step 1, "I was misunderstood / misquoted / I never said X. Yes, yes, the invasion is bad, and I've always said it's bad." Step 2 (the "but" part), "The US is in charge." "They lead the whole thing." "They are the primary beneficiaries." By some sleigh of hand, Putin is swept under the rug, and we should conclude that the US must have wanted this war, "because look at how they want this war to continue." Like magic, a murderous autocrat who decided to invade another country without any justification and only to ensure the survival of his regime, is now a mere puppet in the hands of much more nefarious forces: the US military complex led by an 80 year old war monger (yeah, the same guy his opponents nicknamed "sleepy Joe" during the campaign...) The only problem is that Putin can decide anytime to stop this war by simply calling back his troops vs. sending his youth to die by the tens of thousands. Hard to see what NATO or the US could do to prevent him from doing this, but if ever this were to happen, let's count on Varoufakis to explain why such retreat benefits the US, etc.

It's impossible in a movie of 2:30 minutes first half of it to be only insults and name calling. It's like insulting your opponent before trying to have a debate. Cutting all bridges then talk... All wars are crimes. War is an organized crime. I see Yanis having basically a cognitive dissonance, on one side the invader is always wrong, yet the invaded is backed by a big bad empire that wants the war to be forever. After 8 years of breaching the Minsk Accords by Ukraine & Western signatories, after attempt after Russia's attempt to warn & engage in diplomacy, please explain the options that remained. As far as I have heard, it is my government which has declared the intention to foment regime change, Balkanization & recolonization of Russia... NOT Russian intent to establish any form of hegemony upon the West... that is behind this NATO proxy conflict. When faced with an enemy intent on your ultimate annihilation, is diplomacy wise? How has that worked out for any other country on PNAC's list?

And the US total arrogant refusal of Russia's security concerns and red lines. The US refused Russia's last diplomatic request in December 2021. The US obviously wanted the war to destroy the German economy and get off the cheap Russian gas and hopefully do a regime change inRussia to balkanize it and steal their resources.

So, what is the alternative? If you give Putin even a little he will ask for more. Give him the Crimea, he wants Donbas. Give him Donbas he want Ukraine. Give him Ukraine and he'll want Hungary. Give him Hungary and he'll want Poland. I am not for war. I just don't see an alternative to fighting a man like Putin. If Yanis or anyone else knows the answer to this, they sure are not saying so.

Historically Russian and strategic, Crimea was not going to be ceded to a Ukraine aligning with the USA via NATO. Especially not in light of a belligerent US unilateralism and the Wolfowitz/Bush doctrine. As for Donbas, Putin's policy, considered soft by many Russian politicians, was to push for the Minsk agreement - he didn't recognise Donbas independence or statehood.

The problem I have with Yanis on Ukraine is that he seems to overlook the will Ukrainian people. They are fighting for their lives, begging for weapons. What does Yanis mean when he says help them "within reason"....sure the US will have it's own aims, but thanks to them the Ukrainians just might get their country back. I find this focus on how the US is running the show to be utterly insulting to the Ukrainians who are choosing their own path here.

On the other hand, the Russians did terrible things in the eastern part of Germany during the occupation. If I had to choose between the Russians and the US, I would 110% choose the US side! Yes, Putin unleashed a war of choice, but The US and NATO (And EU nations) also choose to be allied on the side of Ukraine, and choose to put sanctions on Russia. This is NOT the default choice for every country, for example China, India, and many other countries did not officially choose a side. By choosing to support Ukraine, but not to actually fight alongside them means The US, EU, and all NATO Counties has now adapted a policy that Ukraine has to win this war no matter the cost to its nation. However, this victory must not only satisfy the condition of the Ukrainians, but more importantly it must meet the conditions of NATO countries primarily the US. Thus, how can Ukraine really seek a peace agreement if the conditions of this agreement would probably need the approval of NATO countries like the US? Especially when the weapons supply for Ukraine is coming from the NATO. I don't believe that as long as NATO is supplying Ukraine with weapons it can make a independent peace agreement with Russia. However, Ukraine probably won't be capable of continuing this war without the weapons from NATO.

Hammm NATO as an obligation to defend an invaded/attacked country. It's one of their directives! Although... That country must be part of NATO and Ukraine is not... Or wasn't because seems like Zelensky signed the papers to join NATO recently. One might say that NATO helping Ukraine, while not belonging to it, was an illegal act but... Well, when you get a familiar country attacked and invaded you can't exactly go "that's not on the legal papers so I can't do nothing". You try to help! Because there are people dying! China, India and other countries don't have an allied institution that "demands" them to join or help a side! They do whatever they want! If countries and people can avoid a war... They will do it! So naturally China and India didn't chose a side, not much of a surprise there
