Such a powerful expression of gratitude from the fans. Munson was tough as nails. And the fans appreciated every fibre of his being. I will never wear any other number on my back than 15.

It’s very difficult to watch this. The cheers from the fans make it something surreal. Like they wanted it to be a celebration of his life. 38,000 people mourning together by choosing to cheer, knowing that the cheers and the memories transcend life and death. There are no words to adequately capture what was happening during that long, long ovation.

I was only 9 yrs old living in Brooklyn NY. Thurman Munson was my favorite Yankee. My Dad wouldn't allow me to cry. I was Soo heartbroken when Munson died. I remember saying to myself that the Yankees would never be the same again. To see Reggie Jackson crying blew me away. They hated each other. I thought that Luis tiant stepped off the mound a second time, but I could be wrong. The game was on wpix, channel 11. I remember getting up and walking over to my bed. I was looking under my bed for my glove and I felt my Mom come up behind me to hug me. That's when I lost it. I must've cried for at least a good hour. I appreciate whoever put this video up. GO YANKS!!!!!

Marcos Rodriguez this was so sad. I was a little kid. My first live yankee game was on Bobby Murcer day in the early 80’s. You could really see the pain Bobby,Reggie and the guys felt.

I’m a Jays fan… have been my entire life This game has given us a lot of beautiful moments; this is paramount. I’m too young to know about this first hand. I’m crushed watching this. Every day catcher. Nothing flashy. Just an absolute gamer I’ve found a new hero.

Wow Marcos, we were brothers from another mother. I was also 9 y/o and living in Brooklyn when I saw this on WPIX channel 11. We lived in Park Slope, a couple of blocks away from Prospect Park. This was a moment that lives in my memory to this day.

Yep. I too remember this vividly like it was yesterday. I was 14 living in Jersey. Family of devoted Yankee fans. I also remember cartoonist Bill Gallo's haunting tribute to Munson the next day in the Daily News. This was Yankee baseball in it's glorious broadcast heyday, on WPIX with Frank Messer, Bill White, and Phil Rizzuto.

Even as a Red Sox fan, I was shaken & saddened when I heard the news about Thurman Munson on the radio the following morning. What a great & honorable competitor. I'm regretful that Thurman never heard this outpouring of love & respect for him, and hope that he knew how much he was appreciated by his teammates, fans, and all lovers of the great game of baseball.

I was an Orioles fan, and saw Reggie in a bench clearing brawl as an Oriole in '76 at Memorial Stadium on July 4th, at a double header. But Munson was my favorite catcher, & the sight of Reggie standing out there all alone in right field in mourning brings it all back. I was 11 at the time, and thought Mr. October was larger than life, but Thurman was the everyman, and it was like that epic 70s era of the Yankees went with him.

As a sports fan, I couldn’t never imagine losing an important player mid season. It must’ve been one the worst ever days to be Yankees for something that has nothing to do sports. Life is always more important at the end of the day

This was so sad, I went to Thurman Munson "bobble head night" at Yankees Stadium in 2016 and they honored him pregame with his entire surviving family on the mound (wife/ kids etc.) but no real ovation this time around- people seemed more interested in A-Rod potentially getting his 3000th hit. Most in attendance that night weren't even born when this happened- so can't really blame them..

Yeah, I returned to Rochester the day after this game, and some friends came to visit the night of Bobby Murcer's emotional walk-off home run. I also remember a woman knocking on my door to ask if everything was all right because she saw us all jumping up and down screaming through my living room window as she passed by in her car.

I remember this as though it were yesterday. I was 15 years old and Thurman's was the first true idol death that shook me. Thurman, along with Bobby Murcer, were my two favorite players. In Little League I wore either #1 or #15. Even in softball leagues I would try to nab either number. I remember watching The Little Rascals on a small black and white tv I had in my bedroom. The show was interrupted by a Special Bulletin and I'm thinking "What could be so important The Little Rascals is being interrupted?" Of course the newscaster says Thurman Munson has been killed in a plane crash. That crushed me. I loved watching him play the game because he just gave his all every game. Watching that, along with what my Mother taught me, inspired me to work hard and give my all in whatever I pursued. Be it work, my marriage, sports, friendship, etc. I was going to meet him just a week or two after his death because he was scheduled to be at the Willie Mays Hall Of Fame Sporting Goods store in the New Dorp area on Staten Island. They still had the signing and Bobby Murcer took his place. I remember handing him a photo to sign and he looked quite sad. When he returned the photo to me I said "Thank you Mr. Murcer. I am sorry about your friend Thurman." He said "Thank you very much." And he got up from around the table and gave me a hug. Definitely a moment I'll never forget.

I don't remember the crash. I'm not a Yankee fan either nor MLB for that matter. I did hear of Munson as a kid so I looked him up. On paper he didn't have the most impressive stats but he was definitely an all-star. He made his teammates better. What I admire most about him is his devotion to family. He was a dad first and professional somewhere down that line. There is video of his sacrifice for team success so imagine what he was like as a dad. I can always strive to be a better dad. Thank you Thurman for sending that message to me through watching this. God bless his wife, kids, and the Yankee organization for having to experience a heavy loss.

Who could dislike this video? Unreal. I remember this- I was in high school at the time and although I grew up a Giants fan on the west coast, Munson was my favorite Yankee ever. I even got his autograph in 1971 when I was vacationing with my parents at Disneyland and the Yankees came to town to play the Angels in Anaheim. They arrived at the Grand Hotel (where we were staying) and I managed to get his autographs and a ton of other Yankees signatures, like Lindy McDaniel, Roy White, Fritz Peterson, Whitey Ford (he was the pitching coach) and Mickey Mantle (he was traveling with the team as a special coach & Whitey Ford's drinking buddy).
