You can also hook the power cables to your starter.

@@tcsadventures I did the change yesterday and just noted a couple of things. My dipstick although original doesn't have the extension to allow you to thread and unthread it without tools. It's more like a hex cap screw and a metric wrench is required. Getting single grade SAE 30 is a scavenger hunt locally, so I had to settle for 30w20.
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures 3 года назад
I’m not sure I know what you mean about the dipstick. I may have said something in the video that caused confusion. My dipstick is all one piece. It’s an orange plastic knob with threads. The metal part of the dipstick is embedded in the plastic. Although it was obviously manufactured with separate component parts - it’s one piece that you don’t take a part. I did put on the screen a note from the owner’s manual: that when you check the oil level they want you to not just put the dipstick in the fill hole, but to screw the dipstick in to check the level. As far as the oil, I would follow the recommendation in your owner’s manual for the weight oil in your climate.

A very useful video with all the detail from oil type to procedure used. I use a vacuum pump but after watching this video I'm shopping for an electric pump = much easier. Also very useful to see the colour of the oil form your gearbox, cleaner than mine but not by a lot. Great video thanks for posting.

Thank you for your comments! The pump was very inexpensive so I keep expecting it to fail, but it’s still working.

I have the 3HM35F and yes it does require ATF in the reduction gearcase. All of the GM series use motor oil in the gearcase. The confusion arises from the maintence manual which covers the 1GM10, 2GM20F, 3GM30F and the 35HP 3HM35F.

My 2GM with the Kanzaki reverse gear actually has a drain plug on the lower left side, much easier handling. :-)

Thanks for posting, I believe that there was too much oil in my trans causing it to be hard to stay in gear and make a hammering noise.

Thanks for watching! Did the problems stop when you got the right amount of oil in the transmission?

Before you start, pour a cup of water in the used-fluid container, mark the level on the outside with a Sharpie and pour it out. When the old oil gets in the container you won't have to pour the old oil to measure how much came out.

How often should the transmission fluid be changed?
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures Год назад
According to the 2GM20 owners manual (section IX p. 71) under Periodical Inspection and Maintenance - it states after 50 hours the first time on a new engine and every 250 hours thereafter.

Tips for getting all the transmission fluid out?
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures 2 года назад
You aren’t going to get every last drop out extracting the oil - but my experience is what’s left is insignificant.

No I don’t have a video on changing the coolant. You’ll want to flush the system too. You want to be careful - air left in the system can cause super heating of the engine. Below is a link on a guy that I believe is knowledgeable and he discusses how the system works and how to change/flush the coolant. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aZv4IXFPMqg.html Good luck!

Proper name is marine drive. Not transmission. Thanks for the video
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures 9 месяцев назад
As I stated in the first few seconds of the video and repeated throughout the video - Yanmar refers to it as the reduction/reversing gear in the owners manual for the 2GM20. The Yanmar owner’s manual does not refer to it as a marine drive. I used transmission as a commonly understood word and also wanted to refer to the exact terminology that the Yanmar’s owner’s manual uses to avoid confusion. I also put on the screen, pages from the owner’s manual where they refer to it as reduction/reversing gear case. Thanks for watching!

I doubt very much that a mechanic cross-threaded the dipstick. It was most likely previous owner(s). Sailboats in particular are almost all owner (non) maintained. I have been looking at so many boats for purchase over the summer and I have to say they are 95% trash (non) maintenance by a bunch of bumpkins. Even owners with money don't have a clue what needs to be maintained and haven't kept their boats safe. There are many, many, many scary sailboats out there waiting for a strong wind to get dismasted, scary chainplates and standing rigging, electrical wire rats nests, gate valves waiting for an old seacock to break or hose to split and sink the boat. If I was an insurance company I would demand that certain minimum maintenance items have been changed/updated or I would not insure the boat. So no, not a mechanic...trash owners.
