I wish I never started watching your videos. Now I'm cruising the city looking for garage sales to buy mowers. I have made some great profit but my wife is mad because her parking space in the garage is now full of mowers and snow blowers.
I applaud your channel. I worked for the DOD fo 37 years. If they needed a new jet, did the DOD scrap it? No. They fixed or upgraded it. If they needed a new chopper, did they scrap the old one? No. They fixed it. It’s only the suppliers of parts that make repairing machines beyond economic repair.
Same issue with my Honda HRS216. Cleaned old carb and had some hunting, then learned that a new carb is less than $14.00 shipped to my door, Replaced carb and runs perfect !
ShartingFish go to ereplacement parts. Look up your engine model via the number embossed on the side of the engine. You may have to remove the shroud. Find your part number, then shop online, or at a Honda repair shop near you. Generally, not expensive. The local Honda motorcycle shop can order mine, but it may take a week. Then watch some videos non how it’s done.
I have a similar problem with a lawnmower I recently picked, but it occasionally misses, though it cuts grass fine and runs well and being a self propelled mower, I think I am going to do the same thing and sell it with cautions. Good deal for a Honda and the new owner may be willing to spend the money for a new carburetor. Some great deals, especially with the rototiller.
This is why I am watching your 'back issues' of Mustie1 Video Magazine. When you do my lawnmower, I have added interest and gain a little more knowledge.
Absolutely love your vids. I always watch one when I go to bed. Got to finish my day with a little education from mustie1. Thanks for sharing and please keep em coming. And I will always deliver a bid thumbs up.
That was so cool to see the Muntz tape player. I bought that exact model before a got my first car and used it in the house on a power supply. Muntz stereo stores started in CA. as far as I know. I paid like $90 for it in '69 or '70. By the way, it is both a 4 and 8 track player.
AlexMoto I go to the SWAP MEETS all over here in Florida and brother, it's a gold mine of small engine goodies....I score more chainsaws, mowers, edgers from folks begging you to haul it away for $5.00, $10.00
, that's not the case here on central Alabama. People wants a fortune for their non running mowers. Either that or they repair them ,and they want them repaired for nothing

I've got a 5.5 Honda mower engine on a craftsman frame , love the Honda engine, simplicity is what Honda was thinking when they made that engine, it has a timing belt which keeps the valve noise to a minimum, worked at a sears mower shop for 5 yrsthat's where I got my Honda/craftsman set-up. keep the video's coming
Man I love the videos and you really inspire me to tap even more into my mechanical side, I always loved working on stuff but now I want to even more, tonight I tore an entire stick edger down to the piston because it was old and broken, thank you and keep up the good work

Hi, love the videos, keep em coming.I didnt think i would be able to teach you anything new but a little tip for you- the little carb idle screw with the anti tamper top you snapped while trying to cut it- just heat the top of it with a soldering iron and they pull straight off.Hope that might help you in the future.Regards matt

@@user-bw3ve5kz3s The Federation has not lived up to the Minsk agreement, therefore, all previous agreements about security have been nullified. Law is not on your side. Ukraine should have kept one nuclear weapon. And this would not happen. After all, Kallingrad has nuclear weapons on NATO borders. Not the other way around. Propoganda from Kremlin.
Had this problem first time I ever cleaned a Honda Carb out and I used a micro drill bit and drilled out the main jet which was completely stopped up . It was one of those do or die things and it ran perfect after I micro drilled it out .
wow!! thats a muntz blue light 8 track! top of the line back in day...from southern calif.......i didnt know they were being reproduced.... i still have my original from back around 1969 1970....nice finds.
very cool and helpful. i have a pressure washer i bought for free 99. Got the same problem. It vexed the old owner and vexed me for a year now. I have a new place to start. Thanks
If I had to guess, that mower is $300+ new, so $60 is a steal--issues or no. I've got the same mower in the self-propelled version and it refuses to die. Thanks for taking us on the journey, Mustie.
My mower has pretty much the same Honda engine on it. (Except auto choke and fixed throttle) I got some crud in the gas the 3rd time I used it and had to tear the carb off and clean it. Seeing you work on this one will definitely help next time I work on it. I guess they're supposed to have valve clearance checked once a year. I haven't gotten to that yet. :)
I picked up a 4-cycle Ryobi with the weed whacker and shredder/bagger attachment. Replaced the primer bulb and fuel filter/lines..after about a minute, the muffler and engine block start to smoke. Can't tell i it's burning off crap or burning up the piston. Did a valve adjustment, but still having the issue. Don't have much into it but don't want to burn it up either. Hopefully, you'll video your Ryobi run through...great vids.
Mustie, I envy you. No one here in the south ever leaves free mower finds out here on their yards. They give those to their friends and someone figures out if it’s not the plug or the coil, it’s the carb!
Hey Mustie, Honda looks like a GCV135/165, bullet proof motor, will run forever. Experts. Recon in UK don't leave fuel more than 1 month otherwise the fuel is wasted. Keep wrenching my friend. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland . Joe.
Mustie, you mentioned that someone older might buy the tiller. That will be true because the younger generations are NOT going to have a garden to till in the first place. :)
+jbmbanter Hey! I'd have a garden to till if I could afford to own a place where I could PUT a garden. I'm stuck buying fresh veggies from the farmer's market.
FrankTheCat I guess you are of the younger generation who really enjoys watching something that you planted grow. I'm a little older and also do not have a garden spot so I'm stuck like you with farmers market produce. But, my Dad who is gone now always had a 'tilled' garden and made wonderful vegetables for us. I still long for his garden grown tomatoes. Even those tomatoes you buy at the farmers market are nowhere as close to being as good as his. Since you have the interest I hope that in the future you have a spot to till!!! :)
+jbmbanter Look up "global buckets planter." Two five gallon buckets, some PVC pipe, some drillin' and cuttin' and you've got a nice little planter for a container garden. I've got a yard...but being an ex-cotton field...the soil is wore-out hard clay so I garden in buckets like those... Works great!
You're absolutely correct Musto: the idle circuit augments all positions of the carburetor and engine speeds. It is crucial for the entire rpm operation range. Setting the base timing, valve clearance and idle-speed/mixture and a fresh air filter?....everything else follows (two stroke, four stroke, v-8 or moped). Yeah, you can get it close (by ear), but if you want it to be EXACTLY the way that it designed: you gotta have a $15 tachometer. If the engine doesn't want to IDLE (or give snappy throttle response) that indicates that something else is WRONG! ...or yir engine is getting old/worn. At that point , we accept its age and gitter going...EXACTLY THE WAY THAT YOU DELINEATED IN YOUR VIDEOS! I don't have massive yards, or a professional landscaping business: which require cordless, gas powered tools, that can run for hours without stopping. So I'm shifting to all battery powered equipment. Hey, they were punks at first, but they ROCK now.
I have a Honda Izy mower that does the same, it cuts well though, so living with it at the moment. Can I put you on to the UK version of yourself I think, at Retro restore by Martin Butler, his you tube channel I find as addictive as yours, I'm learning loads, so many thanks for that. Dave.
Some fantastic deals and a very good explanation of the carb and how it works . Every year you run into a few carbs like that . As always great video Sir :)
I like WD-40 in my carburetor USC, If the carb sits for awhile after cleaning there is no water caused corrosion. Also that limiter on the idle jet is easily removed with a little heat, it's glued on. Thanks for your video and nice yard sale buys!
It amazes me with your constant projects that you can keep your shop so clean and organized, I must try that someday, lol. I clean carbs with PB Blaster, I find harsh cleaners just harden the gunk, PB and Mystery Oil loosen it up, soak them in a yogurt cup or the like.
Some carbs just won't come back, but what I use in my ultrasonic cleaner is a mixture of simple green and white vinegar 50/50 mix, then once it's clean, say 3x480 cycles then I put it in a bath of cold pinesol and water, let it cool down then rinse with hot water, then blow it out with compressor air, works every time.... Great video.
My dad use to have a troy built tiller like that. One day it started running running rough and leaking oil everywhere. Tore it down and the block was cracked. Wasn't run low on oil, maybe overheated as it tilled a large 80X40 garden. I was really impressed it still had enough compression to fire.
Hi Mustie - Just another comment on the Honda lawnmower, heat from a soldering iron applied to the idle mixture screw limiter will melt the glue and allow it to easily lift off.
Troy-Bilt Pony. Little brother to the Horse. Great for smaller gardens. Serial number will tell you the year but that looks like a mid 90's unit. Worth closer to $400.00 (The new version of it sells for over $1,000.00)
These Honda lawn mowers have a sort of capsule that is filled with wax and controls the choke. It can be finicky at times. If you read the owner's manual it even states that the engine may be hard to start when it is warm, yet has been sitting for awhile. Toro's auto choke system seems funky as well but it relies on both the engine fan and a thermal spring, so they work together regardless of engine temp. I found a Honda in the trash last year, cleaned the carb and everything seemed to be fine. It seemed to have a really heavy crank though, starting was different (IE, heavier) in comparison to other mowers, or so I felt.
That was a fast turn around :-D, i bet the new owner can get a carb for the millions of china made copys of honda mowers, cheap fix :-D I have a frends techumse mower, it has carb problems too, it wont stay running and hard to start, but some of the cleanable bits are behind welch plugs so its repair kit time lol. Motorbike carbs never seemed as hard to clean.
i have the same mower, massive issues with this mower on starting.. one of your previous videos you mentioned to pull the main jet from the center of the carb and inspect the small jet holes and they were plugged bad and it just refused to start.. it was a nightmare i actually ended up with 7 of these exact same mowers with the exact same issues and the same repair fixed them all had 7 fixed cleaned the same day =D i now have a 6.5 honda self propelled with a spare 6.5 motor that run flawless that the only way to start was to use ether before the fix.
Yea, Helmets have a 5 to 6 year shelf life, your not supposed to use them after that as the material gets brittle over time. That rear tine till is great good find on that one. I have been on the look out for one of those jacks, hoping to find one at flea market or garage sale the one I have is not all that great so its time for a new one well new to me. :)
I remember when I started watching your videos and you'd mention cruise nights and I always thought, jeez, Mustie1 must be go on a lot of cruises, as in all aboard, off to the high seas, etc cruises...🤣🤣🤣🤣 D'oh Then I realised you meant cruising around in Rusty, of another vehicle for fun with other like minded people...
I’ve had and sold quite a few of them. They are hard to get rid of that surge. I did read that the thermowax choke actuator might be the cause, or the idle jet like you said.
Great buy. The only way the tiller & mower could have been a better deal is if he paid you to take it. I have found a few good buys between 20 to 100. The worst buy was a lawn tractor for 350. It ran ok at this guys house for about 25 minutes. When I got it home it smokes like crazy & had other issues. It became a great source for videos.
Excellent vid as usual sir!! Thanks! Question- is there a way to use some flexible wire or small pipe cleaner to rod out the clogged tube in the carb? Thanks Mr Mustie. Loved it. S
Just ran into this oscillation problem on an old 12hp briggs rider. Turned out to be a weak return spring for the governor was causing the butterfly to open and close too easily. . Replaced it with one off a like motor and problem solved !
remove the spark plug from the engine, and plug it back into the wire, and rest it against something metal in the engine, then Get a friend to hold the lever, and pull the pull start like he normally would to start it. The spark should be blue or white, but if it is yellow then the coil could be going bad
@HONESTO UNO Does it have that auto choke controlled by the wax capsule? If so, that could be your problem. They start hard when the engine is warm yet they haven't been run in more than a few minutes. The wax has not hardened back up to close the choke because the exterior of the engine is still warm enough.
I know this is an old video but i wish i had seen it two weeks ago. I have a GCV160 that i cleaned the carb on a dozen times if not more and it would not stop doing that surge. Drove me nuts! $10.00 and two weeks later a new genuine honda carb from ebay solved it. Other people must have this problem, cost effective repair for long time owner but resale prob not. So if your a person out there with a honda and it does this, try cleaning it once and if it still does it. Just get a new carburettor. Save your sanity!
That is a Troy Built Pony. 5HP. It may have a Tecumseh engine on it. I would like to see you work it! I am sure that OSHA is not going to check your helmets. They are supposed to have manufacture dates stamped inside some where. You got 3 good helmets. Enjoy your videos.
I've found that you can rod through the air passage in some carbs using 10 amp fuse wire. Hard to find these days as everyone has circuit breakers instead.
I like your vw just like it is. Some people would knock off all that great patina and make it look like all the other boring "restored" vdubs. That one is just perfect.
I had a Honda walk behind that I bought brand new in year 2000. It ran perfect for 18 years then the deck rusted through. I had patched it a couple times over the years, and I’m pretty careful with my stuff as far a maintenance and cleaning. But I gave it to my sister in law to take to her country summer cottage. Still runs and mows that little patch of grass. I mow about two acres so I need a decent mower.
A tip on those Honda's Mustie1, get a tip cleaner set for torches (WYPO makes my favorite sets) and the 2nd finest one on the set fits those idle circuit orifices perfectly, then blow it out and they are returned to like new, they also work on everything else, and there is a size for everything on most carbs-super handy. But also with those Honda carbs I've had good luck with soaking them down with Gunk Heavy Duty Degreaser, and letting them set for a few hrs., then running them for awhile.
I had the same problem I mixed fuel cleaner with fuel run it for 10 minutes and the surging was completely gone after that, maybe I got lucky, but when I got it from my grandparents it was only running with full choke on, cleaned it with carb cleaner it fixed the choke problem but had the same surging on idle as in the video, they always left the fuel in it trough the winter.
Hey Mustie - I enjoy your videos, keep on, I have a Honda mower with the same problem you just diagnosed and repaired, you probably know that a new carb can be purchased for less than $20 from Amazon. I have not bought one yet though, just wanted to let you know.
Even a factory Honda is only around $30. Cleaning carbs, machining rotors, putting bearings and brushes into an alternator and similar skills are becoming obsolete as parts become cheaper relative to the wages of someone with skills to repair.
I work at a dental clinic that used to do root canals. The dental clinic no longer does root canals so I have a drawer with a couple hundred new unused root canal files. They would be excellent tools for opening up carb jets. They don't need a pin vise to hold them as they have knobs molded onto them. I would gladly send them to you if you want them.
Nice example of making lemonade out of a lemon. Just because it doesn't run perfectly, this video shows that a mower is still quite usable in an imperfect condition. The new owner would have done well to invest in a new carb and would still have a bargain.
Really enjoy your videos. If the smaller passages in the idle jet get clogged, can you unplug..... as I’m writing this you hauled out a group is small drill bits.....lol. Enough said.
