Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a skeletal disorder characterized by unusual, new bone formation which looks almost like melted wax. The new bone forms most often where ligaments and tendons but there is also a generalized hardening of bones and bone overgrowth. Although these changes are most often seen in the spine, DISH can affect almost any part of the skeleton, including hips, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, hands, and ribs. Many people with DISH do not have any symptoms, but in some cases the symptoms get worse over time and become quite severe. The most common symptoms are pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion of the neck or upper back.
DISH is caused by the build up of calcium salts in the tendons and ligaments (calcification) and abnormal new bone growth (ossification) but the reason this happens is unknown. The science doesn't have answer to it Hence idiopathic name was given. Researchers believe some combination of mechanical, genetic,environmental, and metabolic factors are involved. People with Diabetes can be more prone to DISH. DISH is more common in people over 50 and in men.
There are no cure found in modern medicine yet. Here I have shown few gentle yoga poses which will help control symptoms and give some relief from pain.

Archie, thanks for loading a very nice video, it’s very helpful I am doing it in the morning after having a hot shower, can you please let me know should I have hot or cold shower after yoga and can I have my breakfast immediately after yoga .Archie is it okay to do it every day. A warm shower is better than a hot shower, end with a cold shower for 10 seconds to awaken the nervous system. Breakfast can be taken after 20 mins of yoga practice 🌸

I got DISH diagnosed, probably early stages, and had strong pain in the middle of the back. Got huge pain relief by doing some stretching in a position similar to the yoga cobra position, without forcing, just trying to get some flexibility. Not sure if it a bad position, but it's helping me a lot right now.

Once your spine fuses you're not going to be making any of those kinds of movements.

Yes it's indeed difficult. However making some movement within your range of motion will definitely help than just not doing anything. Best wishes 🌟

How did you come up with this Yoga set to help DISH suffers?

We go through detailed anatomy sessions to certify as a yoga teacher! This set of practice is a combination of western anatomy with eastern philosophy of pancha prana system. The practice has been put together very carefully! One of the reason to make this video was my father who was diagnosed with DISH last year and this practice helped to feel better.

Not sure if you're a health professional to give this advice! But this video was made mainly for my dad (also the reason I made this video in hindi) as he had DISH and he's doing completely fine now with this practice! !

because of risk of fracture? I'm in the early stages of DISH and a light stretching similar to cobra position is giving me big pain relief

It is always advisable to stick to your traditional diet, eat seasonal foods and eat when hungry. In case of bone and spine related issues avoid gassy food items. Simple diet goes a long way :)

Cut all carbs and sugars. Eat less and only eat once a day. The excess bone growth has been linked to diabetes and high insulin levels. Also try fasting 2-3 days every week.
