A very helpful beginner yoga. I've been practicing this along with Joelle's other sciatica video (20 minutes) and her lazy glutes video, doing one of them morning and evening for about a month. My sciatica pain is now much less through out the day. I notice a difference now that my glutes are toned up a bit. They support my sacrum movements now.

Not calling out any other channels, but this is my favorite yoga channel on RU-vid. Thank you for your excellent descriptions. I am able to follow along without looking at my phone and I really appreciate how you speak calmly without making distracting jokes or comments. You’re really great at keeping me focused on the movements.

Hi Joelle, I just found you the other day. I love your exercises for injuries, and add them to my yoga practices. I just would like to comment on one thing. When in pain I can´t do lateral moves or anything to strengthen the area. I tried that in the last weeks and that has exacerbated my pain and tightness to an extreme. I can´t even sit anymore. Would you recommend doing those exercises in pain-free times, or is it just me? I don´t have anything fractured as I am aware. I was diagnosed with 2 prolapses, trochanteric bursitis (better), and sciatica. Although I´m sure it´s the IT band/piriformis as well. Thank you so much for your videos. :-)

I can't responsibly comment on specific cases without knowing you, your body, or your habits, but what I always recommend is not to go TOWARDS pain or force anything that doesn't feel right. Have been suffering badly from sciatica the last 2 weeks. Tried many videos but this one is absolutely the best! More or less immediate pain relief. Same for tennis elbow yoga - helped better than anything else. So happy Joell is on youtube! 💖

Joelle, I’ve utilized this video for sometime now and it had helped my well being immensely! Lately, I’ve been complacent about my health and body because of my work, study and life balance. As a result, all my aches and mains have made me irritable and somewhat low. Today, I did this set of stretches for the first time. Not necessarily! Folding forward within your own range to feel the stretch can be very beneficial regardless of how far you go.

I found the release as I did the moves and then had more discomfort. I am having sciatica issues UGH. I will continue to stretch and release strengthen my core. Hoping it improves and goes away :-) Thanks so much

I don't see a firm reason why not, but keep in mind that I don't know you or your body, nor what your SI joint issues are, so ultimately you and your doctor are the best people to answer this question. I'm glad you're enjoying the practices!

Noticed this one was different from your other videos where your voice comes from off-camera whereas this one you actually spoke during video. I actually have quite a few videos where I'm speaking live now (I didn't have a good microphone before), for example the 7-day beginner's challenge from the beginning of this year, or the 5-day hip challenge from a few months back. I struggle with cramps in my feet when doing pigeon poses or anything that has me stretching my feet.Can you suggest a solution

That's not unusual, you're not alone! Our feet tend to spend so much time locked in shoes that when we first start stretching them into poses they're not used to, they get "confused." It's basically the body not knowing what you want it to do because it hasn't done that before. For most of us they'll go away with time and practice, but in the meantime I suggest either not going quite so far into the stretch, or coming out of it if it feels like too much and taking a few ankle circles. Joëlle, I have a question. I've fought with tight hips and sciatica problems especially in my left side for the last 40 years (I'm turning 62 this year). Until a few months ago I always began my hips and piriformis routine with stretching my left side, then stretched my right side, and the took another round with my left side trying to make it as flexible as my right side, but actually with very little effect. Shortly after new year this year I made an experiment and began to stretch my right side first to see, if this would effect my left side. It certainly did! Somehow working with my right side first makes the left side relaxe and way more easy to work with. I'm very suprised, cause no one has ever told me about this. After 40 years with stiff hips causing back pain and knee problems, my left side has suddenly become way more flexible than ever and is still progressing. Joëlle, do have an idea, why this approach is so effective and works so well on the muscles and nerves, than one can feel it almost immediately during a stretching routine?

That's a great question and great observation about yourself. Pain, flexibility, and stretching actually have more to do with the nervous system and the brain than they do with the body, funnily enough. So sometimes working the "less affected" side of the body first will help the brain allow the body to relax more when we then stretch the "difficult" side afterwards, because it knows what's coming and it's already had a chance to see that, "hey, that wasn't so bad." Thank you for your concern. These moves are for someone who isn’t suffering great pain. How can I twist and bend like a pretzel when everything in the hip/groin/thigh area screams pain. I’ve decided to get a MRI and a hip injection on 8/16. I can barely walk.

Does anyone else have problems with anything moving their legs with sciatica? I get terrible cramps so can't do most stretches

You may like to start with a gentle practice to relax your legs, for example a 10 min legs up the wall class like this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cICYAEAgVbs.html After that, your legs may feel more prepared to take on some stretches and movements that they aren't used to. It’s very difficult for me to get into that pigeon stretch it flares up the pain pretty badly. Should I be feeling pain or should I stop and try something different?

I'd say you never "should" be feeling pain, so that might just not be the right stretch for your body at this moment. Feel free to take a different pose instead, for example lying on your back and crossing one knee or ankle over the opposite knee, which will target a similar area as pigeon stretch. Or you can simply skip it entirely and meet us in the next pose!
