I have watched every chipping video. I’ve worked very hard on technique. Thirty to 70 practice chips a day. I am very successful during practice. But still yippy during my rounds. My final attempt to change is to look for a sport’s psychologist. Otherwise I will have to give up the game I have loved for 55 years. Thank you Milo for all your great videos. At wits end

Milo's helped my driver and iron SO much, but minor surgery this Wednesday will stop me from hitting those for a few weeks, so maybe I can work on short game till I recover more, Blake. I'm a member and will contact you through the site. Also a lanky lefty, so curious about distance control with the slower, longer swing: works great from great lies, but I lose commitment and confidence on bad lies and too often decel, the death of good contact.

The beauty of working on the short game is it should directly benefit your full swing when you get back! Tempo is huge for short game, but you have to master a consistent bottom first.

That is where I would disagree. I say that because I know as well as anyone. I could chip in practice flawlessly, however on the course I would struggle with exactly what you are referring to at some of the highest levels of golf. It was extremely frustrating. There is obviously a mental aspect, but you have to build a process and foundation that builds confidence. The difference for me was when I could feel a twitchy motion on the course and still make good contact, that is when it changed for me.
@keithdennis5972

Milo and Blake, I can chip reasonably well using right or left hand only. Put the two hands on the club it all goes horribly wrong. Any thoughts on this?

Glad you joined the team! This technique made me think of a longer putting stroke. Does this work for Florida Bermuda? The grass can get really tight, and if you are into the grain it is tough.
@blakecannongolf
@blakecannongolf Год назад
The same motion applies into the grain. You just have to be more conscious of where your sternum is pointed at impact when into the grain. Width+getting the bottom in front of the ball is key into the grain

Great stuff as always Milo and chipping yips have plagued me for years. One question: I am actually very good at one handed chips. And then I see Blake practicing on this vid a lot one handed. Would it be wrong to chip one handed?
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf Год назад
Not at all, in fact he frequently chips with both hands, lead arm for width and structure, and trail hand for feel and face control.
@blakecannongolf

One handed chips are a great way to practice so long as you continue to use your body and pivot while working on it!

What about really short chips, just off the edge of the green? How much wrist action to put in those short chips?
@blakecannongolf
@blakecannongolf Год назад
Those are the ones I personally use very little wrist action on. However, as long as you maintain width, there are a lot of creative ways to hit those shots!
@industrialpalletworx3548

The yips aren't necessarily a physical issue. They are a confidence issue. If you actually have the yips you're technique is likely pretty good. You're too scared that you're going to mess up. It's more about forgetting about the outcome and focusing on your target. Whatever happens, happens. Dr. Bob Rotella talks about it in many of his books.
@blakecannongolf
@blakecannongolf Год назад
I personally had them and was able to eliminate them and develop a great short game after the fact. I have also helped several others work past it. I agree confidence plays a huge role, but confidence has to be developed through confidence in your technique and process. In my experience, people with yips have fundamental issues that make them more prone to the yips!
@industrialpalletworx3548
@industrialpalletworx3548 Год назад
@@blakecannongolf I agree with you to an extant. The putting yips typically affects short putts not longer than say 6 feet. That indicates a mental problem, fear. The chipping yips are generally the same thing, you can hit a long chip or pitch but when you get close oh now I have the yips. If it is the yips it's a mental issue otherwise it really is a technique issue and not the actual yips. The term yips is thrown around by those who really may have a technique issue and use it as an excuse for failure and giving yourself an out for when you fail.
@industrialpalletworx3548
@industrialpalletworx3548 Год назад
@@blakecannongolf I firmly believe that most anyone can develop a tour caliber short game. Yet no one puts in the time to practice it. If you hit less than half the GIR in a typical round and get up and down 50% of the time. You're still looking at shooting around 80. That's 2 putting on 5 GIR and 2 putting the other half you don't get up and down. Dave Stockton won 25 PGA/ Champions Tour events including 2 majors hitting on average 50% GIR.

Welcome to the ML team. Milo is a gifted teacher. It appears to me that you use the same grip Milo teaches for a full swing and that you achieve your radius control by essentially performing a #1 foundation motion. Correct? If not, what have I missed?
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf Год назад
Yes sir, very similar to an F1! Same grip too.
@blakecannongolf
@blakecannongolf Год назад
Yes sir, a lot of the same fundamentals apply. There are still a lot of adjustments with the setup, tempo, etc, but F1 is a great place to start
@bernardsamson9565
@bernardsamson9565 Год назад
I, for one, am tired of guys claiming to treat the yips and then immediately go to fundamentals. My fundamentals are fine. Without the ball there, I can brush the grass as well as anyone. Put the ball there and just before impact the right hand grabs the club or I stand up or do some other spastic move. That’s mental, not physical. And you know what? I can go to a chipping green and by the second bucket I’m great-any technique I use works great. Then I get on the course and face the first chip off a tight bent-grass lie and … guess what? THAT is the yips. Why don’t you assume it’s mental and create a video about technique changes to overcome the mental obstacles? Cross-handed? Something else?
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf Год назад
Oh we go there for serious cases. It does become mental and sometimes without drastically changing techniques can be a challenge to overcome.
@edboczek9939
@edboczek9939 Год назад
Bernard is exactly right! The real “yips” are 100% mental. Professional classic musicians with perfect technique can get the real yips. I’m a pro short game in during practice but play like a 30 handicap when it counts. They obviously have never had the real yips. It’s make a wonderful fun game a nightmare and thinking of quitting the game. So I would suggest these teachers actually read up. Per the Mayo Clinic, the yips are an involuntary wrist spasm, not performance anxiety, a neurological condition they call focal dystonia. So please don’t insult us by telling us just fix your technique.
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf Год назад
@@edboczek9939 often players with full blown yips need to completely change how they are chipping examples could be going cross handed one handed or even switching sides.
@edboczek9939
@edboczek9939 Год назад
@@MiloLinesGolf but in the video you are using the term “yips” incorrectly and suggesting improving your technique will help. It won’t. Would you tell Ben Hogan or Sam Snead they just needed to improve their technique. Look, bad technique is bad technique, not the yips. Example is Tiger did not have the yips. His technique got sloppy. So he improved the technique. If he had the yips he would be done professionally. Big difference. Those that have the yips know they must make a drastic change. 100% mental.
@nickdivincenzo2342
@nickdivincenzo2342 Год назад
Benard, here are a few suggestions for your chipping practice that could get you more comfortable on the course. 1. 5 chips to 1 pin, then go and see if you can 1 putt them all. 2. Alternative chipping to different pins. 3. How many chips till you get a chip in, then can you chip in 2x's in a row. 4. Alternate the above games with different clubs. Remember to go through your same prechip rountine you use on the course. Make sure you keep score with these drills. If you are not winning or improving then your fundamentals may not be as strong as you think. If your fundamentals are strong and you still feel "yippy" try some breathing techniques to help you focus. And I also reccomend reading the inner game of golf by Tim Galway.
