Would have been interesting (and informative) to see what happened if the shafts were switched on the Callaway Drivers. Since the difference in distance was most likely due to the difference in spin rates, it would have been great to see how much the shaft impacted that.

Alot of LPGA players have used the Epic and still do especially the fairway woods. £500 for 5 yards is a waste of money

I was pretty happy with my old driver (Rogue ST Max) after tweaking it over the last two years. But after trying the Ping G430 10k and seeing it hitting very consistently 25 yards longer carry and not suffering any dispersion issues, I purchased it. At 74 years old, might be the last driver I buy. Still short compared to many younger guys at 250 carry but I’m in the middle of the fairway, as I was with the Rogue, and I’m hitting more GIR and getting birdie opportunities. Well worth it to me.

Hey Matt, 100% on board with getting fit, and using money more on lessons than on new equipment. However, your initial test of the Epic vs the Ai Smoke doesn’t seem to be looking at the right things. Yes, the newer club went a few yards further, but the more important thing is how far off line on your mishits are those balls? We know distance is lost on off center hits, and the balls spin more or less depending on where you hit them on the face. The newer technology isn’t geared so much about a hotter face and more distance but more about forgiveness on off center strikes. Please redo your tests and another video on that since most golfers do NOT hit center on every shot 😬

Finally got fitted and wound up with a completely different one than I would have thought. I ended up with a Ping 430 max with a 35g senior flex but the regular 28g weight. I added 20 yrds and incredible consistency down the fairway. My misses are still in play and I have much more confidence when I set up in the tee box. I actually saved money with the fitting over the driver I was going to buy off the rack!

I ended up getting fit for my driver last year, I added about 25 yards and am way more consistent with it. I was spinning my old driver way to much, going for a lower spinning model with an Extra-Stiff Heavier Shaft over the regular stiff made a huge difference. I would recommend getting fit to anyone looking at a new driver. I ended up getting reimbursed for the fitting, because I bought a new driver anyways!

I replaced my driver earlier this year, I was using my dads old driver, the Callaway X460 from 2006. It was a great driver and I managed to get my handicap down to 5 with it. Unfortunately over the holidays I was playing a round with some friends who a just learning to play golf. And they hit the ground before the ball and snapped the shaft. And because then club is 18 years old the price to have it reshafted was 4 times the price of the head. So I ended up buying the Callaway Paradym driver just before the new Ai Smoke was released. I was fitted but I was finding it really hard keep the ball in the air and everything was leaking right. My Dad and I were having a conversation with an older gentleman on the driving range and he mentioned that when he tried the Paradym he also noticed it wouldn’t turn over. So I decided I’ll adjust the loft sleeve to loft it up and make it abit more upright. It made an immediate impact, all of sudden it was launching in the window I like and it was predictable, I could shape it left or right and it is now a long fairway finding machine.

Personally, buying new clubs that I don't actually need gets me out to the range a lot more than I would normally. Also I don't generally buy a new club and expect to see better results straight away. I go into it thinking "I'm going to need to learn how to swing this thing" and just trust that it's better equipment than what I was using before. I was fitted for my current bag except for my wedges and putter.

I play the Epic Speed and I honestly believe it's one of the best drivers callaway has ever made and it looks better at address than the newer drivers. I swapped out the stock shaft for a Hzrdus smoke 70g and it's a low spin monster
@msherer260
@msherer260 5 месяцев назад
Key word is think, all the advertising of golf clubs is made to make you think it is better, yes every year is better than the last, but that better could be 2 yards of distance or maybe 3 yards less dispersion. Before you pay $600 or more for a new driver you can try different shafts (so easy to change shafts these days) after trying about 15 shafts at a fitting I was fitted with a shaft that only cost $125 on my 4 year old Callaway and added 12 yards at the fitting.

April 2024 I've just switched back to my old Callaway XR Pro 2015 in 9deg, from a 2022 Epic Speed TD 9deg.....same shaft. Forget about LM numbers, on my home course I'm hitting it further and straighter, leaving me shorter irons into the green. So much of the tech being promoted is simply a load of marketing 'hype & tripe' to keep sales going year on year, where as the average golfer themselves are the real source of inconsistency not the club.

Shaft profile and club swing weight are the 2 most important factors affecting golf club performance, period. Even with those 2 factors correct, if you have a skanky swing you will hit skanky shots - no amount of money will miraculously transform you into a great ball striker. Equipment companies and fitters don't want you to know this because they're in business to sell clubs and make money - but if what you currently have works for you the majority of the time, DON'T SCREW WITH IT.

You compared the lowest spinning Triple Diamond to a mid-spinning Epic Speed driver, a more fair comparison would be to the Epic Max LS from same year but lower spinning than the SPEED and a better match up against the TD. The LS is a few yards longer than the Speed model, I’ve tested the Max, Speed, and LS and the LS would be an equal match to the TD for the much less than the TD. People are mesmerized by the new drivers and the exaggerated claims, I’ve always said the drivers from 2017 and on with the correct shafts and lofts are just as good as the new overpriced stuff. You just need to try and get it through peoples heads to see that. The latest is not necessarily the greatest. Great video! I’m glad that you’re putting this out there for people to see.

For me I had an Epic and I could not control it. My drivers were all over the place. I now have a Paradym, and you are right it is not a lot longer, but I hit twice as many fairways. For me there was a huge difference. I had a fitting at a big box store for both drivers. However, I was not willing to spend an extra $350.00 for a shaft.

I recently bought the Callaway Epic Speed to replace my Mavrik Max and I am seeing increases in distance and accuracy. I'm a solid 10 yards longer with this club. It is especially good on off-center hits, where I'm not seeing the drop in distance as I did with the Mavrik. I played early this morning and hit a shot that was struck low off the heal and I got the exact same yardage I did with a well-struck ball with the Mavrik. I haven't bought a new driver in many years. I just don't see the point in paying 3 or 4x more for a new driver over a good used one. The gains just aren't typically there to justify the extra cost.
@kooijbas
@kooijbas 5 месяцев назад
I play the Epic Speed too and see the same thing: as long as you hit it somewhere on the face, you'll get a useful result. It's an awesome driver and the last club in the bag I'd want to replace.
@leemzgoogle917
@leemzgoogle917 5 месяцев назад
@@kooijbas I'm starting to fall in love with this club. I hit a drive of 281 yards today (downwind, hehe) but had one of over 240 into that same wind on a later hole. I was not getting distance like that with my Mavrik. Those are each terrific distances for an older bloke like myself (66). I have a SkyTrak and I'm noticing that I'm getting much less backspin with this driver/shaft (2400 rpm +/-) compared to what I was averaging with the Mavrik (3600+ rpm). This is giving me much better roll out. The Mavrik I had was regular shaft stiffness, this new Epic Speed is stiff.

@@kooijbas Agreed. I'd been fitted for driver twice in the past. Both from extremely well-known professional golf shops, and when I took that driver out of the studio and onto the course, I couldn't hit either one of them at all. i think 'fitting' is gigantically overated (normally). Most average golfers, weekend whackers...have no idea what causes what, driver working good one day-bad the next, etc etc. Hitting in a cramped booth, probably not your normal shoes, using some cheapo ball (unless you bring your own), tee height not your norm, the stress of a booth/launch monitor, spectators, hitting one club/shaft 3-5 times-trying another....absolutely horrible for 'fitting', just terrible. Now you wasted at least $100.00 on a fitting with false confidence until the 1st/2nd/3rd time out and have it all fall to crap and now you resent buying it and spending money on the fitting. I'm pro fitting...but it has to be done in the correct setting and the golfer needs to have an established swing/fundamentals-otherwise you're just throwing money away. Just my oppinion, what do you all think?

I generally like Matt's videos. This one, however, is laughable. So, you take a 9.5° driver, turn it up to 11° and say how it does not hit as far and has more spin than the 9.5° driver that was fit to you. Well, duh. Why didn't you compare both drivers at 9.5° and show us what advantages the "fitting" has then? From other videos I've seen there is very little difference in the performance of a driver with same brand and model of shaft but only varying in the flex. Rick Shiels does a video like that using four different Mitsubishi shafts. Distance was nearly identical. Dispersion was somewhat of an issue with the A flex shaft, but not enough to be unplayable. The differences were mostly in the feel, not the performance. In other videos, the head (draw biased or not, etc) makes more of a difference than the shaft.

I bought my ST-Z 230 in December off the rack, after learning from my iron fitter 5 months earlier that the shaft in my old gamer was fine for me (he measured it to see if he could tempt me into getting fitted for a new head). The ST-Z came with a very similar shaft spec, and since my gamer was 9 years old, I thought it was worth the gamble, and I am glad to say I was right. Reason is simple, one you didn't mention: cost. In my experience, Fitters never have good price deals, even (like in my case) you actually pay them separately for a fitting session. Drivers are crazy expensive these days, so when I can get a current model at 299 EUR, it is very hard to resist. One point you make is valid though. Although with the first swings the new driver went straighter, the distance improvements came only after some swing changes/lessons/drills
