This is my friend Daniel Torres. He has broken several mexican backstroke records. We recently went to film his stroke and realized that he has been swimming backstroke wrong! Chances are a lot of us are doing the same mistakes. So stick around to see how you can improve your backstroke technique.
We shared some of these tips on our instagram page before this video and we had a great response. So make sure you follow us there if you don’t want to miss anything.
Backstroke is not an easy stroke, specially because you don’t see how you are pulling water. On the other three stroke at least you see part of your stroke. Because of this you could go years and years pulling water wrong. This is what happened to Dan.
See at the beginning of the stroke he was pulling water outwards, then extending his arm to far out giving him little leverage. At the end of his stroke he was pulling water inwards. Now even with those mistakes he could swim a 25.9 in the 50 backstroke long course and 56 low in the 100 backstroke long course. That is because he does a lot of things right, but in order to go faster he has to perfect his technique.
After 3 hours of us filming and swimming drills, we made a little bit of progress. We mainly worked on bending the elbow a little bit more. This seemingly small change gave him a better initial angle to pull water and better leverage in the middle and main part of the pull. One of the things he noticed is that it is way easier to swim this way, but it didn’t feel right. That is because he has spent 20 years applying wasted effort while swimming backstroke.
One of the things to note here is that he corrected a little bit his technique while going slow! Chances are that if he were to swim fast he would go back to his old inefficient stroke technique. But he knows that and that is why he will put in the work to fix that. So we will have to wait and see if he brakes those records again in the future. If you want to follow his progress follow him on instagram @danitorressama

Excellent work,,, also a good progression drill is to grab the line and pull yourself,,,, this automatically adjusts the arm pull underwater,,,,✌🏼️🙏🏻💫

Great video. Helped me get almost 5 sec off my 100m backstroke average. P.S am I the only one that hates backstroke arm recovery? I mean it's water up my nose....

Angle your hands out (thumbs away from torso about 10 degrees instead of thumbs straight up) and water splash from arm recovery will go to the side of your head instead of on you face.

I'd like to see some instruction/details on the drills. I used to have a fairly good backstroke, but having not swum for many years, then returning to masters, I seem to be doing something wrong. I just don't catch the water the way I used to, and don't have much easy speed either. Anything that could help with this would be appreciated.

Yep. I agree. I noticed I swim faster when I bent my elbow scooping the water and less drag.

Hm. Thanks. I'm going to be 62 in three weeks and for my birthday I hope to swim better by watching your uploads. Is it correct that the arm motion for backstroke should try to emulate that for freestyle? Also, a coach told me my hand was entering across the midline and to correct that by trying to drop it in just outside the shoulder--maybe I need to take my camera to the pool?
@SkillsNT
@SkillsNT 5 лет назад
Nice! Well I don't know about emulating the freestyle motion. Yes taking the camera to the pool is a great idea, because even if you think you corrected that crossing over, it's impossible to see for yourself. That why the camera helps

"then extending his arm to far out giving him little leverage.".... Extending the arm far out causes much frontal resistance on upper arm.... according to coach Gary Hall Sr. of the Race Club. And I agree with his opinion.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XvAMq9rSzyU.html His explanation is about freestyle pulling. But I think the same principle applies to backstroke also.
@SkillsNT
@SkillsNT 5 лет назад
Yes I meant that little leverage is wrong and a lot of leverage would be better if he had a more bent elbow. But what does he mean by upper arm? That it causes resistance on the arm that is not pulling? Or on the upper arm of the arm that is pulling?
@leesanghwa8175
@leesanghwa8175 5 лет назад
On the upper arm that is pulling... When looking the swimmer from top of the head, or the direction of forward movement... we cannot do with torso area... which causes most frontal area. But we can hide upper arm area from frontal drag.

First off big fan of the channel. Secondly I think we should be careful with words like swimming "wrong." Maybe the straighter arm pull is "better" for sprints but too "inefficient" for longer distances. Many front crawl sprinters use a straight arm much faster than high and bent elbow. Yes it creates more frontal drag but we have to think 3D and that some people compensate for that really well. People said Usain Bolt was an inefficient runner yet he was the fastest man alive. I'm curios if Torres can match his 25-26sec times with this change. Good luck!

christopher rogers so for freestyle sprints it’s better to keep your arm straight the whole way or to bend at the elbows while pulling?

인스타그램 instagram.com/skillsntalents 시청해주셔서 감사합니다!
