This song was inspired by a relationship where here boyfriend left her for an ex-girlfriend. Her going 'back to black' was interpreted as this breakup leading her back to drugs or depression.

Didn't help that this was the censored version. The words that were bleeped out relating to sex and drugs were the key to some of the song's meaning. She's 100% talking about a toxic relationship where she and her boyfriend keep getting back together and breaking up. Her story, the 'back to black', is her sliding into depression and substance abuse, re-uniting with him, then rinse and repeat.

I think she’s burying her heart because it’s was broken so many times by her on and off again relationship with her ex-husband , Blake Felder. He wasn’t good for her in any way. He caused a lot of her problems that would lead to her demise.

The original video showed a "Here Lies The Heart Of Amy Winehouse" in the tombstone at the end, but that was removed in later edits, so it made things more confusing. The box is supposed to contain her heart.

So when their relationship was tested, he goes back to his ex and she goes back to 'black' (loss and depression). I believe the funeral was her burying her broken heart.

One other thing is that she wrote this song after her breakup with her boyfriend and the album went platinum. She collaborated with Mark Ronson and the album was recorded in New York City. There's a video clip of her recording this song in the studio in NYC which is worth checking out. Ironically, when this song and other songs from this album became popular, she stardom took off, and her boyfriend came back to her. They got married and their drug use got much worst than before. Eventually, they got a divorce at his request. She got sober and had a relapse on alcohol which killed her.

It is about the death of a relationship. I love this song, indeed the album Back to Black is a masterpiece. I love the honesty of her writing. I think the album was produced by Mark Ronson. Wonderful stuff.
