This vlog is why I know you can still be a concept artist, digital artist, game artist, or matte painter if you are bad at absorbing information in a standard educational style. ..but it isn't a walk in the park ;).
THANKS for the sub. Cheers!

I'm so glad I came into your channel. I didn't share this on the other comment I made on your other video. I have a learning disability and a health issue. I wasn't able to learn anything from school either. Everything that I learned at least a bit was by watching shows on television. When I read something I couldn't remember anything and when the teachers explained anything in class I couldn't remember what they had said a few minutes later. All my life I had to write things down in order to read the things I have to buy. I walk with a note with my address on it with my address so that I won't forget where I live at or I carry a letter with my address on it so that I won't forget where I live at. It's really scary at times not remembering things, but when it comes down to creating things on paper I can do a few things. I use stencils, rulers of all types for circles and spirograph rulers to create art. I also use the paint section on my computer to create art. I take photographs, because that is as close as I can get to drawing a real art on canvas. I learned how to create music in two years once I learned everything about my digital audio work station. When I completed my education I took these courses that were open book courses and this helped me a lot, because it wasn't about how I could remember, but how I understood the questions. I completed all of my education already. I never gave up on myself either. I use color pencils and water colors to draw my work. I have done what ever I can to complete my goals. The goal here is to never give up on anything. Your videos are very inspirational.

Nice, always great to find other artists with graffiti roots. I was pretty heavily into graffiti back in the '90s as well, though on the east coast. I started to cut back a fair bit once I hit 18 and the consequences of getting caught were a lot heavier. In part due to that plus tons of demands on my time and a new found love of 3D, I ended up letting well over a decade slip by with hardly any drawing and have only recently started to rectify that situation. I've been doing what I could to focus on the fundamentals that I always ignored back in the day, and trying to get started with digital painting in hopes of gaining some skills that can transfer to texture painting and to work on my own concept art and refs for things I want to model.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
That is cool, I know several people with graff roots. The scene seems way different now, and the consequences as you pointed out are much steeper. ..but, I think if I was young now, I would be doing photoshop anyway, and probably doing little videos. It's cool you are polishing your skills.

amazing I feel it sooooo much.... grew up wanting to be an artist, mediocre family life to be nice about it, graffiti kept me creative ended up tattooing so that's what I do for a living to varying degrees of Happiness depending on how custom stuff is ,and just recently got a digital tablet and the little laptop to try to step it up for more personal creative endeavors .... biggest problem is getting over the computer side of it to know the interface I got manga Studio 5 (clip art ) ... unfortunately the area I am in now doesn't have a bunch of creative stuff going on but RU-vid and trying to be clever seem to keep me on my toes though I do miss having people around me that are a f****** amazing... super good to hear a simmalar thought processes as far as me knowing what my intentions and work ethic versus the speed of progress and support which are both coming in very slow ... don't need a lot of attention just a little bit every once in awhile haha ... OK that's what up great channel and work
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Cool to hear that, yeah I think if I stayed in graff, I would have done tattoos too, or I would have got into metal fabrication. Sounds like we are cut from some of the same cloth. imo, just jump into the computer end with both feet and peel the pain off like a bandaid.

I just graduated from the university and I now have a First class degree which is totally useless and if I want a job in the field I need a Master. Which I do not want to do, because this degree was one the most boring things I've done in my life and I can't bear another essay on Translation or Italian Culture. In my last year I started learning digital painting and I decided I wanted to change paths and even though I never thought I could make art for a living, I decided that I should try. Lately I have been trying to find a job and feeling absolutely crap about myself. Your video was such an inspiration, thank you.

Thank you so mcuh for this video! I just finished watching your interview with Artcore, where you talked about the difference between your wrist and your ego, regarding what you want to do as a job. I think I unfortunately burned myself out with fundamentals and forgot how to have fun with my art and just being creative. Do you have any tips on picking that back up and discover ways to find what you actually like to do, instead of putting so much pressre on yourself? Thanks :D

Heya! Good to hear from you. When I feel that the work side gets overbearing, I try to mix in side projects. RU-vid is one of them, I get a lot of inspiration working with others on social platforms. If I feel really out of sorts, I go to a cafe and draw, or try to change my environment. If that does not work, and I absolutely can't find the drive to draw, I try to do something with my time that will let me grow as an artist, like learn a new software package or go to a museum, or study a technique.

love your videos, so im currently at community college for graphic design but, i want to be a concept artist , its what i love, ive making characters and worlds for as long as i can remember . I really want to go to art center , i draw and do art work everyday. Working hard at what i love is no problem for me. But i dont live in cali and i cant afford anything else atm and if im not in college idk what to do. So my hurdle is i dont think thiscollege suits me but im staying so i can have a good gpa to apply for scholarships for artcenter , which one good thing my college transfers to there. so maybe i should just switch to a studio degree? its anAA degree to btw
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I think you should finish your community college, it will look good to the entry board that you have the ability to finish something. There are a few schools out there, I know ACCD is one of the best, but there are a few others that are really great too, and a bit more affordable. I feel for you guys that are having a tough time getting funding. Check on gnomon, FZD and some of the more boutique concept art schools, also write them and see what kind of funding/loans/grants you can get before you commit.

I stopped making grafitti when the police catched me and took all my cans. But I was lucky that I din't spray on walls where it's illegal. I wanted to do it on this day but a friend rather wanted to smoke pot and so we didn't spray anything and police can't do anything but taking our cans. I think I am now as good as you was in the past. I really think now that one day I will be as good as you now. hehe Do you recommend to draw one piece per page in your sketchbook or making as much studies as you can on one page? I always see people making so many wonderful pieces in their sketchbooks and mine is just full of studies and very few pieces. Please keep making those motivational videos.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 8 лет назад
+Christian-E. Latte haha, my sketch books are not that fancy to look at either. Some people are really good at composing each page and it always makes me sad. My sketchbook tip is to start drawing from the middle of the book, and draw in the front of the book at the end. This way all your good work comes up first. Also for a sketch book, people will be looking for your thought process. I think it's good to show several ideas on one page at times. Regarding graffiti, yeah I got caught a couple times, but the trouble you got into was not like it is now. Also, I am sure you can be as good as me. I am not afraid to show I was not always that good of a drawer, and the reason is so that younger people can see that they can do it too.

I have a buddy that is color blind and he is very good. There are hurdles, but if you pay attention to your color wheel, and make some filtering layers in photoshop you can track what is happening. You can also get into storyboarding, most storyboards are black and white and there is always a need for them. Also, I suggest learning 3D if you feel like you are behind, it will help a lot to understand perspective.

In my opinion, I can draw things I see fairly well. However, when I try to draw things out of my head, the result looks absolutely awful. Do you have any advice?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I think drawing from your head is much harder, the questions about lighting and design are not solved for you. It takes a lot of practice and it takes some experimenting first. Try drawing the silhouette of your minds idea first, then add detail to it. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the details, so I find breaking into stages helps.
@mebro7176

Thanks a lot! I will try this out. Your channel has been super helpful to me man, keep it up. :)
@nsuarez
@nsuarez 6 лет назад
I was in your situation before. You need to do drawing exercise where you see and then draw it without looking. When you are done compare. It takes a long long time but that is how I learned to do it. If you do it every day it might take you a couple of years. It took me over 3 years because worked 14+ hours a day and I could draw every day. The days I couldn’t draw I would look at pictures and try to draw them in my head. I’m like the most stubborn person in the world so I did reach a milestone but nowhere I want to be yet. Good luck and keep grinding through.

The pain is real, man I feel you. Especially nowadays when everything is more standardized than ever.. sadly that means a lot of memorizing words. If I was in the same spot, I'd try to locate the data in visual form somewhere on the web, like infographics, or documentaries or podcasts and double up on being exposed to the lesson in multiple ways.
@clemmycl00
@clemmycl00 7 лет назад
I do a lot of that heh. I can hardly memorize anything from reading a textbook unless I spend A LOT of time on it, that's why I listen to podcasts and watch videos. I think visual people are a lot more musical too, cause listening to something really helps for me instead of reading it. P.S. Did they give you a scholarship to Art Center for that portfolio you sent to them?

I'm currently in an illustration program but I feel it's not for me and it's not a good program because it's not challenging or making me learn stuff that'll get me to the next level to become a great artist. What can I do to study concept art by myself and organize a study map?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
imo, take on some of the challenges that are going on, #artwar is a good one. Once in a challenge, you will see what other people are doing to get to the place they want to be. You should also gravitate to the best artists in your program and form a synergy. Also, don't be afraid to ask your teachers to be really hard on you. ..do it in a nice way tho, not in a way that makes them feel like they are bad teachers.

The only reason you can't do it is if you end up not enjoying the drawing and painting part of it. My advice is to start drawing a lot, and see if you can picture yourself doing it every day for the next 30 years ;).

It took me two years to finally think my drawings were good enough to get my ideas down, so don't worry if it is frustrating at first.

ok thank you a lot for answering my questions, but i just have one more. Im just afraid ill be a loser and my parents are telling me i'll amount to nothing. btw I have been drawing alot and i do enjoy it, but do I have to go to art school?

I suggest some form of education. IMO, you should look at design careers too. Parents never seem to want their kids to be artists, but they don't seem to mind them being designers, haha. Being a designer gives you a lot of options that also include drawing a lot.

I like what you say about passionate drawing Rob but I have this buddy ( his not an artist) who always tell me that I have to change my style to the concept industry standard, he alwasy keep saying that my colours are not strong enough and my paintings look too much like tradishional media and that I should go more digital style in order to get into job. I decided to not worry about him and focus on critiques from art groups but his words hurts me the most cuz even if I'd want to I can't apply what he's saying. I like the most traditional vibe and it's something that comes to me naturaly so I want to develop myself in this direction. I'm trying to improve in various aspects of fundamentals but maybe I need practice in the way of radical big steps rather then polishing my skills. I'd be thankfull if you can look at my art. blindblack.deviantart.com/gallery/

Hey man, check out Jakub Rozalski's work. Traditional style, but doing concept art. You know what you need to do. If you change who you are, there is a solid chance it will not make you happy. IMO, listen to others, but in the end you should follow your heart.

Thanks for replying. I know Rozalski's work and I'm even looking to something less traditional. My hudge inspirations are Simon Goinard and Brandon Liao and other related to that. I just wonder if I'm not too stubborn in my perception to see things like they are. But I beleve any other way won't be easier or faster and it's just about my skill level. Thanks again.

yeah it was a pita to afford. I had three scholarships, freelance art jobs, loans, and I still had to have help from family. ..but, it was the best thing I did.

Yes, but the question is this. Can you be a concept artist if you suck at drawing?
