an "only audio" video is actually very useful to me because I can work on my illustrations, and still understand what you mean, without having to look at an image

You can work for free or for very small money some time but after some point, you have to value your skills. There is nothing more depressing than feeling that you don't receive equal value back. Of course in a situation when you doing a good job.

This is great man! I was considering an animation degree but was undecided because what I really love to do is be creative and draw and illustrate. I wake up in the morning first thing I do is draw and I try to draw as much as I can. I'm 21 now and going to a film school for production design in the fall hopefully. Your work is freakin awesome!

This was really great insight. And sound advice for any creative field. So thanks for taking the time to put together a podcast. I was reminded of something Ray Bradbury said (had to look it up so I didn't F it up): “I always say to students, give me four pages a day, every day. That’s three or four hundred thousand words a year. Most of that will be bilge, but the rest …? It will save your life!”

Now I am doing one point perspective study and I am gonna study perspective for week or two,depends how it goes. 4-5 hours a day,maybe more. Thank you... It's easy to not take time seriously when you're a beginner. There's no one to tell you what you have to do that day, or even to guide you. Videos like these help materialize an understanding of the true sacrifice and dedication needed. It doesn't happen magically.. Although my work is not entertainment concept art - to eventually become good - it really should follow the same guidelines. The small niche where I have an opportunity to work in, unfortunately is known to have a lot of mediocre art. I think, because of poor art education. I really don't want to be another uneducated artist with mediocre art. Videos like these are a big inspiration. Sorry for the rambling comment! Just thanks.

+Forest Hymn Hey cool! I was really considering assembling my own 'free art program' for people just starting, or wanting to see what it would be like to start. Does that sound interesting? The program would have homework suggestions, and a progression line for getting better.
@WhiteHorseStudioArt
@WhiteHorseStudioArt 8 лет назад
Robert Brown That actually sounds fascinating! I mean... wow... it sounds like a big investment for the instructor, but I think people would be very grateful. I mean, it's extremely generous. I'd... be over the moon! I went to the wrong college to study art out of ignorance. The program ended up having only 1 class that taught digital painting. It was a good class. But $50,000 in student debt later, the other classes did not even teach the basic fundamentals such as perspective, visual library, values, etc... I didn't know that was what I was supposed to learn! But I shouldn't blame the school, it was my own fault. I hope it's not too late...
@TeamConceptArt
@TeamConceptArt 8 лет назад
+Forest Hymn It's never too late! I just put up a line quality tutorial that might be fun. IMO, getting a good general education, is extremely valuable to design, so do not write yours off. Now it's time to seek a few of those building blocks with tutorials and what not.
@WhiteHorseStudioArt
@WhiteHorseStudioArt 8 лет назад
Team Concept Art That is true... it did help in other ways, in a social sense. A lot of artists tend to be very shy, I was one of them. College does help improve communication skills.. which I guess is extremely important, in the big picture! Awesome, I will take a look at it. Yes - with all of these tutorials available, I'm thinking of spending a couple months just devouring and applying tutorials, from Feng's videos, these ones, and maybe also Scott Robertson's book "How to Draw" and "How to Render"... it should be a good time to learn. Thanks for the thoughts !

@@RobBrownTV yeah you don't have to draw this much you just need to draw very regularly, promoting unhealthy work ethic is not a good thing TIME OFF IS A HUMAN NECESSITY PROMOTING THAT YOU NEED TO PUSH THESE EXCESSIVE TIMES IS BAD. IN ART SCHOOL YOUR BEST WORK IS MADE WHEN YOU GET THE MOST SLEEP
@MrmerryPippin-tw6rv
@MrmerryPippin-tw6rv 5 лет назад
@@unfeadunicorn While that is true, you should be taking that time off very occasionally, you don't need that much rest time. Just enough to recover. It's like working out. 3-4 hours of drawing a day is totally acceptable for a HS student and probably needed if they want to be an artist. I wish I had drawn 3-4 hours instead of doing my hw. Hw and school get in the way of some people who want careers that are completely skill based, and they waste their time not building those skills with pointless work. He speaks truth. Sad, reality breaking truth. But truth. Time management is the enemy of everyone. Solve that, you can do all you need and more.

that was awesome, thanks for posting! I've been lucky enough to make a living-freelancing-doing concept art for tabletop gaming miniatures for the last 6 years. and what you say really is true...you have to be a total crack fiend for drawing/painting/sculpting/whatever in order to get it to a level where people will regularly pay you for your work. i'm up from 6am to about 11pm everyday and aside from an hour or two, i'm drawing the whole time. i'm putting in about 7 hours of practice...figure,anatomy,hands,heads,etc and then another 7 or 8 hours working on the stuff i'm getting paid for. it really is an extreme kind of lifestyle and not for everyone..

Danny Cruz You said it! It looks fun right?.. but eventually you need something to carry the day when the 'fun' wears thin ;). I believe a lot of programs would have you believe it's easier and more fun, and less work that most realize.

what is your advice for people starting late (20's) and no exposure to art when they were young? I remember a time believing creativity was something people were born with or not, and I didn't have it.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I would say be as open as possible to critique so that you can excel as quick as possible. I know a lot of artists that started in their 20's. I would also say learn 3D to help speed things along.

Rob Brown how do I develop my sense for what is "cool" I heard of a "visual library" but I have no idea how to develop one. I want to be able to see things with my minds eye. But every tutorial I read is "well you know, you just _feeel_ it and you know when it's right" doesn't help me understand.
@RobBrownTV

Keep fluent in the latest trends, and get to know the zeitgeist. Go to museums, play games, watch movies, experience life and seek out creative endeavors. Put all that data into a mental database and try to see what compels you about why they are currently popular, why they are interesting, why they are good. See if you can find an element that you feel would make something from your database more interesting and cooler to you, and draw it.)

Hey Rob, im 27 and yeah i startet to actually learn this year. Of course i did draw when i was younger but never actually learned it. So i what got me back was actually 3d. Thing is as 3d artist i can do pretty well if i have a someones concept. But as i want to create my own characters id like to concept them on my own so i got back to drawing. AS im quite old for learning this thing im trying to dedicate as much time as possible so its around 4 hours a day for last 146 days and improvement is quite big. Thing is do you think that ability to draw and paint is also crucial for good 3d character artist?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
honestly and off the record, I think 3-d is the way we will be doing concept art in a few years. While drawing is fast, 3-D is getting to be just as fast. It will take only a few innovations, and drawing will become a lost art. IMO, you should have a bit of the basics, so you can describe and make a plan for your model, but 3-D is a super strong way to get into the industry.

Your works are amazing and this is very inspirational :D In your video you mentioned drawing at least 10 hours a day, and I really would like to that, but I'm a little lost as to where to start. I've been drawing through high school, got my first tablet a few years ago so I have some foundation, but I don't think it's solid enough for me to stop practicing that and move on to designing alone. Where do you suggest that I should start? Is there a website or workshop that you recommend for building a strong foundation on value, perspective, color theory etc.? Or how did you build your foundation and how did you practice before you became an intermediate artist? I'm not sure if you still answer comments but it would be a great help if you still do :D

Now that I'm older, I love the art for games and movies and can kind of stand movies or games because there are games and movies that I do like. To explain my insecurity better I was wondering if you have to love a lot of games or if you can like a few? I mean do you have to be crazy for the industry's products? I'm also veering on video games causing addictions as a reason to reconsider because I got addicted to VG throughout my childhood so I just don't want any other people being affected . I was inspired by games to draw during that time but then I just played so much I didn't draw but now I do some 7 yrs later. I like game art but not game play to sum it up. Am I worthy to ascend to the concept elites (lol trying to not be so serious. But yeah I've been wondering this since I graduated from a FA and Design school. I majored in painting) I'm willing to try this path also for financial reasons. I'm sorry for any sense of expectation that you could solve my problems but I have no other way to explain this issue. Even if you don't have an answer, thank you so much for your videos.

I love a couple games, and I like a few games, and the rest I am not into, although I can appreciate them. Some studios want you to be into their game, some do not care, but I think it is most wise to have a deep appreciation for a project if you apply for it. Never lead with, 'this is not my type of game'.

I'm a student on my last year of uni illustration... I've kind of realised concept art is the route I want to go, so I'm going to a postgraduate with concept as a focus possibly. Most things people have told me that before you get hired in a company 'let's say Disney' you need like 3 or more years of experience. But I'm not quite sure what people mean by that? Is that all in internships and work experience, other art small based jobs ? Other than that what your opinion on what to do straight out if education? Other than the fundamentals of course :)

for 3d generalists/concept designers, who are utilizing both 3d and 2d, what would you suggest the ratio be between 3d/2d? especially if 3d is the main medium? Like is it okay if I draw only 3 hours a day, but model another 10 hours, then on a few days draw 8 hours and model 4. Just wondering haha, there's not enough hours in the day even tho I'm working 7 days a week :)

Do you think the 3D/modeling/texturing jobs are easier to get? I know the drawing/painting jobs are most popular but when i look on places like art station at the job listings there seem to be a lot more openings for 3d related things. Its just hard because learning that software on top of all the other things is even harder! (also thanks for this video! really appreciate your perspective)
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 8 лет назад
I think so. I also think that more and more design will be done though 3-d, so it is not a bad choice if you feel like 3d is your aptitude. There are a lot more 3d people than Concept Artists, and you always see an opening for really good modelers.

i feel the need to give a slight description of my life just to provide you a understanding of my dilemma and what i should do from here, so here i go. since i was young I've always had a passion for drawing managing to be top of my class in anything remotely to do with art. but as I got older i was persuaded not to take it seriously especially from family and unfortunately i did. once i turned 18 i join the army, not to say i haven't enjoyed my time in the army but i don't see it as something i love doing. i'am now 23 and recently my passion for drawing especially concept art have been reignited, i can see this consuming my life again (in a good way) but i want you're opinion on if its to late for me, considering the competition having such a head start, if its even worth pursuing such a carrier and also is it essential to go to uni, if you want to make it in this industry? thank you for taking the time to read this
@RobBrownTV

It sounds like I was in a similar boat as you are. When I was young and in High School, I never knew what design or what concept art was. Nobody told me it was a real job. I knew I had great passion for a skill set I had, but did not realize it was called entertainment design until I found out about Art Center in Pasadena at the age of 24. I honestly think having a few years of experience in 'life' is no problem at all, and can be an advantage. As far as should you go to university, I would say get the absolute best education possible for you. Some people have the resources to travel across the world, to go to university, and some can only get to youtube for tutorials. I will let you be the judge of what is possible for your budget, but my suggestion is to take the hardest road with the most work, and push to get the best results possible. Cheers, R

Hey Rob! You were a modeler and a concept artist!? That makes me happy. What would you advise someone do if they have the raw talent, drive, and skill to develop and be really good at both 3d production art and design? Is there some role that straddles the two? CG generalist + concept design basically.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I got into modelling for two reasons, I wanted to learn it, but I also saw a spot where we needed rapid level building from someone that did not need much concept art to move forward. In smaller studios this is very handy. Also, many projects have lots of concept guys for preproduction, then cut back when they hit production, knowing both is a great way to keep on a project if you love it. Of the two, the drawing is the hardest so, imo, start there, then you will see how 3D fits with you personally.
@picosdrivethru

Okay cool. Yeah see Im a fairly strong modeler, but perfecting draftsmanship and design skills is what I'm working on now, since I really want to get good at 3d design and that seems to be the best way to think/design quickly. I feel incomplete as an artist without being able to create. Staying on a project and being able to take things from design all the way to final assets would be ideal. Thats good to know, thanks!

Thanks so much for this video. It was an extreme eye opener for me. I've been a bit disillusioned on the whole concept art thing but all I knew was that I was interested, and I never really understood it. I think I'm more drawn to wanting to visualize and create characters rather than the whole entirety of a game/movie/etc, though I'm still unsure. A question that may seem a bit off topic from this comment: I'm currently 18 years old and about to enter college, I'm going to attend a community college, and Im planning on transferring to an art school after I complete that. I was wondering if there was any disadvantage of attending a community college for someone hoping to pursue an art career in the entertainment industry? Thank you so much for this video and for reading my comment :]

GalaxyWing Actually, I would totally recommend it. Art school, is intense, it can be very competitive too. When I went, the avg student was 22. I would go to JC, and take a lot of drawing classes, and general ed. Rack up the sketching time so when you shoot for Art School, you have the beginnings of a portfolio, and your General Education units are out of the way.

Scott, great videos. What are your opinions on concept art.org in 2017 and art station. Im coming over to doing more concept art laterally from doing comics, falling back in love with digital painting etc. My collaborators and I are developing an IP that will function as a showcase for that property and double as a showcase to present to art directors at conventions etc. Particularly on art station the standard varies but the top end like in comics is extremely high. Do you think these venues are a good place to show work?
@RobBrownTV

I am not sure what is up with CA dot org, it used to be the standard but seems like it ended up being a marketing platform for a small section of the community. Everyone I know uses Art Station, and that includes Art Directors looking for artists for projects, some go to Deviant Art, but that site is very casual. Also, consider a dedicated Instagram and tell little stories there too. Good luck!

Hey Rob, I'm Prateeik and I'm 20. In the last year of engineering degree.( Although I'm not at all interested in this) I've just saw your work on your social medias. And that's mind blowing. I've always been looking for someone well experienced to ask some queries about concept artist life and career. So, I've been drawing alot since my childhood. So according to this video somw of the problems are solved as I can draw for hours enthusiastically and I'm determined enough for this life. Now questions comes. 1) I am already good at drawing everything. But it's partially original. I don't copy any artist art. But After drawing it. I come to realize that it's totally in that style. So I have no particular style of mine. What can be done here? 2) I've been drawing since childhood without any art education. So I just realized I'm lacking of fundamentals. (So I started practicing it lately). But I'm not confident enough to judge my self to judge my improvement. What should I do? 3) I just heard in last mins of this video that it takes piece of paper and work to get admission. (Correct me if I've misunderstood). I'm financially weak . But somewhere heard that they can give us scholarships on some terms. Can you elaborate a lil more about this please. As we don't habe any such colleges in India. I've to think deeper for this decision. Thank you if you're giving time to read this. Waiting for your response.

To me, you should get the ability to show your own style in a way that can be used in production for a market you know about. I have had friends work on projects for India, and they had to learn the style. That means, there is a market there, you just have to find it. It used to be, everyone wanted to look like Hollywood, but now I see that design is a much more worldly collaboration, and it will continue to do so. 2) So, apply the fundamentals to your own style, and embrace, and be confident with it, do not be afraid to be yourself. 3) In my market, the best art wins, it can be on paper, or canvas, a tattoo, or digital. Just make sure the way you present the art is clean, and well done. Check out Crash Mccreary, he became famous with paper and pencil. Also check out Kim Jung Gi, he became famous with paper and pen. Regarding getting a job, find a small one, and do really good work, do so much good work, they would be crazy not to ask you do do it again. Once you have a couple people that have to use you, slowly start raising your prices. Good luck! You got this.

Hi, my name is Charles and I have been drawing for fun for about 15 years and I'm already good at sketching... Or so i be heard from everyone and I believe I am myself... My question I suppose is. Is it just as hard for a good artist to start vs a bad one? And is this job more about talent vs a degree? Thank you !!
@RobBrownTV

Charles wood apologies for missing your question earlier. I think a good artist has a leg up on a bad one, as long as the good artist does not get comfortable with the fact things come easier for them at first. Talent > Degree for sure. ..but, both need a good network.

My entire goal to ever being a concept artist is just the use of my work and seeing it come to life while loved by others. I'm currently in school for hairdressing just so I can have a steady income and allow myself the money to go after my passion. Is this wrongful thinking? I want to love what I do, but I also need stable income and I scared myself out of it and pushed it further back.

Hey, thanks for the video. I want to ask you for advice. I'm 19 years old, a student at a shitty art school. I've drawn all my life, though I've never drawn over 5 hours on a day and sometimes I would take long breaks... like months. Of course my drawing skills are better than the average person, but I'm not fantastic by any means. I've been going back and forth on what I want to do to earn my money, having done some 3D modeling, concept art, 3D animating, music... For me, I think that doing concept art would be the most fun - I at the very least know that I want to do something creative, expressive. But I fear that I have wasted too much of my time and won't be able to make it very far, I didn't know that you'd need to invest that much time into just drawing all sorts of things in different perspectives and whatnot. I still don't really know what to do to become a good artist within the least amount of time possible... I'm looking at tutorials all the time, but my improvement is going so slowly. What do you think, is it too late? Should I give up?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 9 лет назад
BUGHUNTER6 Heya! Solid question. I understand the nerves of taking the risk. ..but, who is going to invest in yourself better than you will? There is a huge range of design/concept work and opportunities that are not always clear to young artists including, game designer, package design, info graphics, video production, twitch, youtubes, movie production, tv production, story boarding, product design, prop design, world building, environment design, theme parks, and on and on. It seems to me you have a very strong visual aptitude. I would spend a lot of time researching. In regards to becoming a good artist quickly, get with stronger/better artists and draw with them. It will be a bit tough on the ego, but it will make you improve very quickly.

When you say you should be drawing 10 hours a day, do you mean 10 drawings a day one hour each or 20 drawings a day 30 minutes each? I guess the problem I see for me is I draw to solve problems. For example, I want to make something and I'm not sure how its going to go together or what materials its going to be made of and those problems have to be solved before building it. What I can't imagine is just drawing random thing in life just to get in 10 hours of drawing time. Am I thinking of the 10 hours of drawing time correctly? This video really helps, thanks. I'd like to hear more of your experience at art center if you might want to share in a future video. What is it like to attend art center?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 9 лет назад
moofushu Heya! Happy to reply. I should have elaborated a bit on the 10 hours, I think saying 'forwarding your drawing skill 10 hours a day' would have been better. Meaning, looking at tutorials, designing, sketching, doodling, painting, researching and going to classes. In your case, whit the solving what materials to use and problems, those are perfect to sketch out very loosely before you move to your 'big' drawing. I think fast loose, but accurate sketches are super important for the early stage of a design you describe. I like your idea of describing Art Center, I will do an episode on it. Cheers.

I know Photoshop and i even do oil painting however i want to be a concept artist i do know the fundamentals and i do draw for many hours a day but the problem is that the country i live in doesn't even have artists and my parents wouldn't let me study abroad because they think drawing is embarrassing but i still insist on doing what i want. do you have any advice on where should i start on concept art?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 10 лет назад
You will be reliant on being a remote artist. The first step will be to build your online presence and social platforms. Take your online image very serious so potential clients will view you as trustworthy and hard working. Put only great work on the web. Become friends of people on the forums, concept art.org, DA, CG hub, and things will start to open up. The better your work is, the faster it will open up for you.

Hey man, great video. I have a few questions. I have a great passion for video games and as a kid, (just turned 20 today) I have always wanted to create games. I am not sure how tech savvy I am along the lines of programming or anything like that, but in highschool Ive always had an inept ability to draw even though I never really "Worked" on drawing. So i guess you can say i have a raw talent but of course with raw talent, it needs to be built up to be something more. Also, I don't know if I would want to be in to concept art or 3d character/environmental artist. I am a stronger environmental artist but I really want to build up my character art skills. So I guess here are my questions.. 1. What would be the "ideal" major to study in when attending college (plan to goto univ. Cal. irvine) Art? or graphic design? 2. Do I even need a degree if I want to go into this trade? I see a lot of people saying completely different things, companies want degrees but some don't even mention it. 3. What kind of technology or sources should i start drawing? standard pencil and paper or should invest in a stylist 3d drawing computer/tablet. lastly. What is the best way to start out? I noticed you mentioning this in your video but I didn't quite understand it, how did you start out? Sorry for the long post I'm just trying to make up my mind
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 9 лет назад
jacob boeser You are exactly why I made this video. It's a pita to figure out what directions to take. I can't imagine how hard it must be with all the 'noise' out there. One thing I noticed that is in common between all the jobs you mention is 3-D. Character design is 3-d anatomy and drawing, Game design is 3-d and writing/storytelling and scripting, environmental artist is 3-d, drawing, and shot composition. So firstly, I would get your hands on Maya, Max, or Sketchup (free!) and start learning how to model and see if you like it, and can picture doing it for the next decade. I would steer in your education towards programs that have design classes, that have structure and deadlines, and that give you all the fundamental skills to become a designer in the broad sense of the term (composition, construction, art theory, script writing, story telling, etc.). For 1. The best part of an education is getting the knowledge but also building the network that you will launch your career from. Get an education where the professors have worked in the industry. For 2. Companies want talent first, hard working, smart, then a degree after. ..but how do you find out which companies are hiring? The best way is to have a buddy already there telling you about a spot. Being one of hundreds of resumes from Gamasutra is pretty much terrible. Remember, HR will toss out 90% before ever showing the Art Director. So you need your network to find out about the best jobs. If you can get a network of already established people, talent, and learn the industry without going to school, go for it. For 3. Just today I drew in Pencil and Pen on paper for RIOT Games and they loved it. They were fairly crude thumbnails, but they got the ideas across very quickly and we are moving on to better and cooler ideas without a lot of turnaround time. Pen and pencil is a great way to start, but you should work towards a decent laptop, install photoshop and sketchup, get a side monitor, and a wacom pad and you are pro. Cintiq's are killer, and should be on your list fairly quickly, but they will not make your paintings better if you can't draw with pen and pencil. Cheers, hope that helped. R
@jacobboeser
@jacobboeser 9 лет назад
Thanks man. It may not seem like it but you were the biggest help that I have come across so far. Unfortunately, I have a laptop and installed photoshop a while ago (I have a pretty decent lenovo) and photoshop was slow. So, being the gamer nerd that i am, I invested in building a beast of a gaming pc and now photoshop runs like a charm. But I will definitely look into those other programs you mentioned. Also it seems like you made up my decision of which school to goto. Univ. of Cal in Irvine has Computer Game science as an actual major, the school I wanted to goto was Cal. State Long Beach and just get into computer science. I chose Long beach only because they are closer to LA and have a better rugby team. But Irvine has what I want. But thank you man I really appreciate it.

Victor Von Bonbon You should carry a small sketch book around with you, and sneak in sketches when you can. Speed sketching on the go will really help you get your skill dialed in. There was a time when I was a security guard, and a maintenance person at a pool. I used to doodle on everything during my down time. At that point getting 10 hours in was impossible for me too.

Victor Von Bonbon Hi Victor, This is Rob, I am replying on my Team ConceptArt channel. I used to paint graffiti on the weekends, 20 plus hours. In the evenings, we sketched and hung out with buddies who also drew. I think when I had a full time plus job I could only get 2-3 hours a day. Ultimately I went to art school and the hours went up. ..the thing was, that I then added student loans.

Victor Von Bonbon Don't let it get you down, just plug away at it, and commit the time when you can. If you prioritize your drawing fairly high in your things to do it will add up quickly. 10 hours might only be possible after you are a full time student.

I totally get what youre saying. I just love to draw. when im busy with work and I can't practice and draw i get super pissed off and feel like I'm wasting my time. I understand you have to learn all the fundamentals, but theres a lot of tools that allow you to by pass these whether they be 3d software or simple gadgets like perspective grids to simplify the process. if you use these tools would you be at a disadvantage. sometimes these tools can really speed up the process.

Hi! The first step is to draw with pen on paper, start learning perspective and compositions. The step after that is to get a couple of gray markers so you can start shading. You want to be able to rapidly draw ideas. If you have access to photoshop, the final level is to get photoshop and draw your ideas using one of the wacom tablets.

Well, I've been drawing for all my life just for me, designing my own universe since I've been 13. Now I have over 300 characters with everything what a character needs (backstroy, personality, their look etc), my universe have name, politics, story, maps, weather, cultures, even how is the moons circle there. I draw like all the time because I love it and what? I have no chance to be concept artist without a proper school, papers, that I can work in that industry that is hard to get in and then it's pain in your butt anyway.
@Dednutreap
@Dednutreap 9 лет назад
Szczurzysława I'm going to have to disagree with you. The wonderful thing about creative fields (Like Concept Art) is that a degree and your schooling have barely any value in the vast majority of cases. If you were to go and apply for a concept art job, your degree and your school that you went to isn't important, your *portfolio* is the number 1 most valuable thing you can include. Proof of education in a degree or a diploma isn't as important as *showing that you can do your job well* If you maintain the attitude that you "have no chance to be concept artist without a proper school, papers, or that the industry is hard to get into." Then you won't, because you'll make excuses instead of *doing* it.
@vincem2759
@vincem2759 9 лет назад
***** Well it depends, Going to college diffidently helps build a network. However it is not guaranteed. Neither is having a great portfolio as there are many factors that go into play when searching for professional work. Also not all concept art is the same and can get very technical. So having access to people within the industry helps in a university. I got a chance to go to school with major art directors in the industry. So its a 50/50 thing.
@Dednutreap
@Dednutreap 9 лет назад
Vince Meadows well yes, i should rephrase that a degree in itself actually has value, but it isn't a required prerequisite in a lot of cases. Though yeah, networking is probably the main benefit

What's the working condition like? Why do you work 14 hours a day 365 days a year? Can't they just hire more people? What is the pay like generally speaking? Do you get cramped/injured hand from drawing too much?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 8 лет назад
Yeah you can get carpel tunnel in your wrists if you are not careful. Never draw with your wrist resting on the edge of the desk. Conditions can be anything from a sheet of plywood on sawhorses, to a nice air-conditioned office. Regarding hours, things have changed a bit since I put this episode up. Companies 'try' to keep the hour reasonable (due to several lawsuits) , but do you still end up going home after a day of work and need to work on your own projects. I think pay can range from 35k to 200k a year. 200k would be the very tip-top film artists 35 being an intern. I don't know the average, maybe 70-90k a year?

Hi Daniel! In a practical sense you would need to be able to draw fairly solidly. So work on that first if you don't have that already. So if you are an architect, try to find work concepting designing cool structures.

Look Rob, there are no free meals, its not much different than the programmer crunching to get that alpha out, That graphic designer staying late to finish projects , Lawyer crunching to prepare for a big case etc etc ... there are no easy jobs and this is no harder than most of the top paying stuff out there so if people think to quit because its not easy , guess what, only easy jobs are low paying ones. I mean you take for granted the fact that you get paid enough to support a family , most people in today's world need to be lucky to get to own their own play "someday". So as far as I'm concerned, concept art is hard and require discipline , is not a consideration because everything else worth doing is the same way.

@RobBrownTV 9 лет назад
I love this question. I have seen both persevere, and both fail. In time, the gap between 'more' and 'less' talented people gets smaller, 'if' the less talented person accepts the fact they need to do the work to get more talented and they do not give up. A more talented person (and I have seen it in person) can fall behind 'if' they think they already know how to do everything. In the end, the very best quality artists I know, are gifted with better than average talent and better than average ability to seek more skill. They also pair this ability with patience and willingness to prioritize quality over quantity. Worth noting, they are all easy going and very cool people who get along great with everyone in a studio situation.

I don't want to discourage people, but I do want them to know it is a very hard path, and you need to love it for more than money, in order to succeed. Many sources make it sound easy to get into. I don't sell anything, do workshops, or make money off the burgeoning concept art community, perhaps that is why.

if a person is discouraged by this, then really its better of searching what they really want to do no matter what.

this is terrible advice, were you simply trying to put people off for less competition? being a concept artist is not a life style its a job if you cant do it without sacrificing your life then your not good at your job
