You Can't Make a Barn Cat a House Cat

Pablo will be much happier outside. Upon regaining his freedom, he did what any self-respecting barn cat would do, which is to immediately and thoroughly inspect his entire territory to see who has been there and who is there now. Learn this well: upon entering any place, familiar or unfamiliar, the first thing a cat wants to know is, are there other cats here. Then, where are the hiding places. Finally, where are the necessaries: food,. water, and litter box (if indoors). Also, cats have good eyesight but still generally don't recognize other cats, even close friends and relatives, until they get a good bead on their scent. That's why Pablo was wary of Mollie Murder Mittens and Ginny Barn Cat. Finally, to avoid any potential gut issues, try to introduce new food slowly. Start by mixing it with the old food half and half, increasing the quantity of new food over the course of a week or so, depending on how well it's tolerated. Because even though a cat likes a food, if it gives them diarrhea it's a no go. Morgan, if you're going to own cats you need to start thinking like a cat. The best crash course I can think of is to watch lots of Jackson Galaxy. He's got an answer for everything cat-related. Become his best friend. Here's to Pablo's triumphant release - Cheers! ~ Lisa

I'm amazed your cats played everything. The many toys I buy mine - they mostly ignore. Except the big, catnip filled bananas and cigars: those they love. And Pablo has serious work to do outside: re-establish his territory with inspection and markings!

While I will say, just for the comfort of anyone who's ever had an injured outdoor cat, that they're highly adaptable animals who can learn to live anywhere, I think that if Pablo heals up nicely and seems like he's functioning at full capacity, there's no reason not to let him go back to free-roaming! But also, as the owner of a feral cat turned loving house cat, they may be adverse to change, but the most important part, if that is the road you decide to go down, would just be a lot of mental stimulation and play time! He's a working animal and he'll want to keep doing that, probably even when he does eventually retire as a little old man!

I think Pablo is better off staying as an outdoor cat but just imagine him getting catnip

the thing with outdoor cats is that no matter what they are always at risk of injury and death when you keep them outdoors, much higher than people realize, and its just something you can't really control. their life spans are shorter than indoor cats and its just something you have to accept if you're going to use cats as a way to control the pest population- they are there as an animal with a job after all. i will say that for feral/semi-feral cats who can't live indoors, being a barn cat is a good idea for them. next time you need to add one to your farm maybe look to see if there's any programs for rehoming ferals to barns in your area/state or something similar, although of course a feral cat comes with its own sets of problems (still very doable in my opinion). as for pablo, much like lil' barn cat he seems quite used to human company and could probably adjust to indoor cat life if that is something you choose for him in the future, albeit with ample play time to keep his play agressive in check cuz he just seems like a surprisingly high energy cat. he's still quite friendly with lil' if he's grooming her, and he's just being more aggressive with his play than she probably likes especially with her old injuries. his bites at you seem to just be the 'lets play im BOOORRREEEEDDDD' that cats just do when understimulated since he isnt growling/hissing with his ears pinned back (some cats will growl a bit if they're very unstimulated, one of my cats even do this when very energetic). all in all, pablo is just a VERY playful and energetic cat that you'd need to find ample outlets for if you were to make him an indoor cat in the future.

Pablo could adapt to inside but he needs a lot more in terms of toys and hang out spots then a cat raised indoors. I have a feral rescue named Charlie; he lived outside til he was almost a year old so he was very feral. My sister works at a vet and no rescue could handle him. He was aggressive in the exact same way as Pablo once he got used to me. I literally have about 50 little balls with bells in them around all over, 3 scratching posts/cat trees, access to all the windows and on top of the cupboards to watch when I am cooking. I also have some cardboard scratchers because Charlie literally needs to be a bit destructive sometimes in order to be happy. He also absolutely hates doors being closed. There are these stacked round towers too with balls trapped in it, Charlie will sit and swat at those silly balls for like 2 hours straight sometimes lol. Now he actually doesn't really like outside unless there are birds usually he just wants to go right back inside.

I had a cat I got from my grandma that was mostly an outside cat. In his old age he hated going outside. Just wanted to be warm and comfy inside.

Pablo is a hunter and wants to play hunt. Seems like he has cabin fever.

One thing cats LOVE is a bowl to sleep in. Anything a cat can fit in, as long as it's a bowl. You can even get scratcher-bowls.

My grandparents barn cat retired to semi-indoors in his senior years, living in the garage and sunroom most of the time but still prowling the yard for mice/rats/moles to hunt. He didn't care much for toys either, just wanted warm beds and treats. Pablo would probably appreciate coming indoors in his senior years, but he's got too much farm cat energy to live indoors all the time.

you could also try to make him a half indoor/outside cat. let him leave and enter the house when he pleases, at least if you're there to open the door for him.

I caught a glimpse of Pablo remarking his territory at the very end of the video. He's got some work on his hands. Good to see him back on the job.

My cat got a similar cardboard house for Christmas. I put it in front of a window and he *loves* it. The house gets warm on sunny afternoons so my cat naps in it. He uses it like a little cave. He likes using the 2nd floor of it to stash all his little toys. He puts them there like a dragon with his hoard. I was worried it was overpriced, but my cat seems to think it was worth every penny.

To teach a cat not to bite, make a high pitched pain sound when he bites you. That's what kittens do to teach each other how to play, and he'll eventually get that he's hurting you and stop biting you.

We call it "Cat Politics" in our multi-cat household. It's similar to "Hen Peck" order, but more fluid due to Human Influence. Pablo has always been Top Cat (TC) over Lil, but he was absolutely bored indoors since he's relatively healthy. First thing he had to do outside was to scent mark his farm as TC, or if Molly is now TC, as the only male cat in the area. Now, he has to try to reestablish his TC role or ensure he's still above Ginny. Expect a bit of Political Infighting in the days/weeks to come.

Chewy is by far the BEST online pet shop ever and while I don't have a cat, caring for my dog would have been much harder without Chewy/Frisco

My cat was having the same problem Pablo had. Apparently it was from giving my cat tap water. The water has things in it from when they stripped. I switched to stream water, and haven't had a problem since.

Pablo is still happiest as a barn cat. I'm sure that he'll let you know if and when he's ready to slow down, maybe as he ages he'll move to an indoor-outdoor arrangement.

Quite right! Pablo Barn-cat has a place and job on the farm - he’s not as hurt as Lil’barncat and can safely be an outside puss with a rich social life and an important role of keeping the rodents down. I’m pleased to see Sir busy re-marking his territory 😊

I was able to transition one of my outdoor cats into a very content indoor cat after a surgery, but the other two were never content to do more than visit inside. I think you know if they’re just going to be miserable inside. Be free, Pablo!

Pablo 'biting', that is cute. It is how some cats show affection, they do it with other cats and then it does not hurt because they have got thick fur. Pablo just wants to show that he loves you when he does that. Look at his eyes being closed, the posture of the ears also is a clear signal that it is affectious.

Chewy got amazing affordable cat trees. We got a 7ish foot tall one for about $80 3 years ago. We also order our cat food from them (Taste of the Wild, grain free).

talk to your vet about giving the other kitties food for kidney issues. if they don't need it, it might be harmful to them in the long run. whats most important is that they have regular access to clean water, and maybe mixing their food with some water too so they're getting enough

Do put water in Pablo's urinary care dry feed to make a gravy. He needs to take in more in liquids and this is one way to provide it.

Most of my cats have been at minimum, strays. A few have been pretty darned feral with one deciding that living inside an apartment beat living outside it; that one wouldn't go outside unless the door remained wide open. I have however had a few that were clearly not happy without outdoor access.

I’m glad you finally let Pablo go back outside. It’s just in their nature once they are an outdoor cat to be an outdoor cat. Unless there is some unforeseeable reason why he should be indoors, it’s best to just let him live his life outdoors. I’m really proud of you Morgan for letting him go back out with the other barn cats and you know that just shows once again, how much you care about your animals overall and do what’s best for them. That was very cute to see the two dogs laying there on their porch even though it was muddy outside, They were definitely sunning on the porch muddy paws or not. I love your farm and it just almost hurts my heart not to see something every day from the gold star farms. Same thing happened when our indoor outdoor cat had to be put in lockdown. He got an infection and we didn't want him out getting dirty. He went mad for the 2 months. Finally he was free to come and go as he pleased and he was back to the cat we all loved. Must have been worse for Pablo as the outdoors is all he knows. Great thing to do for Pablo, Morgan. Weird writing my own name down. Us male Morgans got to stick together.

i just expanded my catio, it now goes from the house to the hot tub and then from the hot tub all way to the back wall next to my alley and the pool where i built it 10ft up to give my cats a view it's amazing

I have 3 rescue feral cats, who are supposed to be out door cats. But wake up every morning to all 3 on my bed. With the better weather arriving I'll see them less and less. But come the winter, they'll be vying for a place by the fire and the best spot on the bed. Hard life for a working cat!

As much as I wish every cat and dog lived in safe warm houses, some pets just “born to be wiiiiild~” 😄 Outdoor at least. Some cats thrive on sofa, some thrive in a field catching rodents.

The best type of toys for playing with a cat that likes attacking ankles are interactive toys called teazers or wands. Jackson Galaxy has them and they are great. Cats need to hunt catch kill, especially a barn cat/hunter. If they can't hunt something they will hunt you, lol.

I get my dogs special kibble for sensitive skin from Chewy. I love it! A new bag comes every 3 weeks or so. I never need to worry about running out. It’s great.

I've found that those long stems of grass seeds you can find around farms make for some good cat toys. They love the way it moves and keep at it even once the seeds get torn off. If you're good at keeping them from pouncing on it rather than just batting you can even make it last a couple of days before replacing it with a new one. Some cats will also play with branches dragging on the ground since the sound and rapid movement gets them going. My cat tried to tear up a door frame when I kept her indoors a while for health reasons and she isn't even a farm cat. Cats like routine so even with good indoor enrichment they just don't like adjusting to major changes when they're older. You'd probably need a catio to really satisfy a cat like Pablo and a part of his frustration is likely the loss of territory range.

Just give him the option to come inside. You can lead a cat to shelter and a better life but you can’t make them like it. Also nothing wrong with a cats that’s just a cat. Indoors and outdoors

My outdoor/indoor kitty gets feisty when he’s stuck indoors, particularly in the wintertime because it’s cold out and he comes in more often and spends less time outside. I try to play with him a lot in the winter to help get rid of some of his energy which helps with the ankle biting and hand attacking. He’s always calmer and a lot happier outside in the summer 😂 I also think Pablo will be much happier outside, whenever something happens with my cats ( which luckily is very rare) they are always so exited and happy to be able to go back outside and go back to work.

I'm not surprised that Pablo wasn't happy being inside, it would be like trying to get Toby to move inside. It's just not their environment. Plus there's no telling what Pablo's going to find out on the hunt. The indoors just isn't as stimulating for him. Lil had no choice, having been hurt so badly, but Pablo was definitely ready to get back to work.

I think Pablo will be fine outside. Watch the barometric pressure next week, when it drops, watch the cows, that’s when they are more then likely to drop a calf. You are lucky to be able to keep them close by the farm at this time, when ours drop they roam around on about 80 acres and momma likes to hide their calves through out the day… not good when it’s time to find them. Hey! Been a fan for about a year at this point and have been loving the content! Normally don’t comment because I am unfamiliar to farming but I am super familiar with cats! I had a boy cat get the exact same urinary track issues and let me tell you, the food for the urinary track helping is super great for them but I find my cats hate it. I had to resort to mixing there food with 50 wet food/ 50 dry urinary track infection preventing food. If you notice that Ginny (although she seems to like it), molly, and Pablo stop eating I would recommend trying that! Can’t wait to see the new calf’s born. Keep up the amazing content!

Cats vary. It can be difficult to get an outdoor cat to adjust to indoor life, and also difficult (and maybe fatal) for an indoor cat to adjust to an outdoor life. But there are exceptions. I once had two cats at the same time - one had never been outside; I met her mother, she was born as an indoor kitten to an indoor cat. And she loved trying to get outdoors. It was a real effort to keep her in; an effort I made after she got from a fenced back yard to a street, and was hit by a car - she never wanted to give way to anyone or anything. She did survive that accident, but learned nothing about caution from it. The second cat had been scraping for a living on the street for a while before I got her, although she wasn't quite feral. She didn't like most humans, but once she realized that indoors meant warmth and regular meals, she never wanted to leave.

The cardboard scratchers are nice. But I do recommend that you use extra tape on the inside when putting it together.

I agree he is an out door Cat. I tried to bring a Cat in and he was never happy as soon as I open the door out he went. He was OK indoors but not for long.

When I had my Cats ( on at a time ) and they were feeding I used to say; ( In Banter ) " Kitty your a Puss / A Real Puss " ! And when Friend was over he said; ( affectionately ) " And That is exactly what he is " !

We love chewie. We slice open the box and have our dogs look in and pull out their new toys. Since our dogs rip apart their toys we replenish one each month. Love the chewie

Yeah I relate to Pablo barn cat. I had a really boring remote job before. I was so bored it honestly affected my mood, I was cranky, I exercised a LOT, and I honestly started getting depressed. If Pablo enjoys hunting outside and hanging out with his friends, hopefully he can go back outside once it's better.

I hate to say this, but cats can be indoor AND outdoor cats at the same time! You open the door, let them out, and then let them back in later when they want some food! You'll still need to have a cat litter tray inside, just in case of emergencies, but they can do both!

i truely think that a barn cat that was happy outside will never be fully happy inside. Its just more natural for them to live their life outside, so if nothing really bad happened out there, they probably want back.

Basically all the foot-biting and pouncing is a classic too-much-energy problem. It's not enough to have passive toys lying around - for cats with high energy like Pablo, they need to chase something that gets whipped around and behaves like prey every day. When he mellows out as he gets older, it will surely be easier to manage when he does eventually retire indoors. Jaxon Galaxy's channel has a lot of legitimately good cat behavior tips (though not so much the homeopathic stuff, but that's a minor feature) for house cats.

My cat would love all the boxes he adores amazon days when my dad orders something big. Even if they're small boxes he still tries to get inside them

Yes cats are creatures of habit & none of us want to or can change them. Some cats are though prone to kidney issues; in fact it's one of the leading causes of death in elderly cats. All any of us can do as owners is watch them closely & work with our Vet. As you know a good diet, exercise & plenty of water are essential. But you know all of this already At the end of the day we all want our cats to be happy & to be healthy. A big part of that as you can see from Pablo, we have to let them be who we are. And you are right, you have to let him go back outside! Run free Pablo
