Anyways, the LAAT / Republic Gunship is one of the very few craft that Star Wars got exactly right. I mean, the wings are too big for something that doesn't really /need/ wings, and those missile launchers could have been styled a little better, but aside from that, it just looks right. And it performs right.
So, hey, something something blind squirrel something nut something.

@aliboy357
@aliboy357 2 года назад
To note, anytime Star Wars uses the word “laser” they don’t mean an actual laser with the exception of the Death Star superlaser. It’s a generalised term in the universe that gets used for blaster weapons, typically this is in reference to spacecraft and vehicular weapons. For example, your typical “laser” cannon or “turbolaser” is actually just a plasma cannon. With the composition of the plasma dictating its colour such as ionised plasma being blue and somehow better at fighting droids.

@@jchoneandonly Death Star was unique in that it was actually just a hyper-powerful laser rather than anything else. Kyber crystals were the only focusing crystal they could find that didn't just shatter upon firing while focusing each beam. Compared to a blaster or other "laser" weapons in the universe which use blaster gas, of which Tibanna Gas, is the highest quality and excite the gas particles with a laser then package and fire the resulting plasma. All without a focusing crystal. Whereas we know the superlaser required rather large crystals to properly focus all that energy.

Another helicopter that is worth a look at when considering the LAAT is the only other contender for the 'Assault Helicopter' label, the Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk (not to be confused with the Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk, I guess they really liked the name). It's intended operational profile was very similar to what the Hind ended up being, though it never ended service.
@beejay7665
@beejay7665 2 года назад
Not the ‘only other’. The S-67 is considered an attack helicopter, similar to the Huey Cobra or AH-64 Apache, rather than Assault. The Army’s MH-60L and MH-60L DAP aircraft are considered Assault assets. MH-6 little birds and AH-6 killer eggs were/are also assault platforms in their own right, or could be part of a larger assault package. MH-47s bring the heavy assets. I flew air assaults on the USAF MH-53M; I can confirm that Fortunate Son was on our playlist, along with Hendrix’s (Dylan’s) All Along The Watchtower. Also Disturbed’s Down With The Sickness and, for some reason, Georgia Satellites made the list

@@beejay7665 The S-67 was interesting. It could be configured either as an Attack platform or as a transport., though how much it could do at once is something that I don't think anyone ever figured out, given the program was axed after the prototype crashed.

@malusignatius 2 года назад
I'm not sure I'd place either the Little Bird or the MH-60L DAP in the same category as the Hind, they're both utilities with guns strapped on (arguably scout =utility with the MH-6 admittedly). The truth of the matter is, the Hind's a uniquely Soviet design, made with Soviet doctrine in mind. There was never really a need for an equivalent machine in the west, not because of capability, but because NATO doctrine didn't have a requirement for such a helo.
@beejay7665
@beejay7665 2 года назад
@@malusignatius Agreed; the Hind’s combo of extensive armament and troop insertion capability were unique, and the Star Wars gunship definitely draws from its role and aesthetic. The U.S., in its air assault role, builds an assault package utilizing different airframes with different capabilities tailored to the objective. We could put a large force on the ground very quickly, either landing or roping in, but our weapons were defensive only and we would usually have air cover. We were also too big for urban environments, where the MH-6 & AH-6 excelled.

I'd also argue that the ball turrets on the doors area call back to the B-17 flying fortress, notably the belly ball turret which you could only get in after the plane took off, and once you got in one you had to be let back out by another crew member, so god help you if you needed to bail out of the plane. It also was eventually scrapped, because while it wasn't the most dangerous position (I believe that was the waist gunner IIRC), it was the position where if anything went wrong you'd be giving everyone else PTSD after they hosed you out of the ball turret and buried you in a jam jar

I have not once seen a peice of western media that gets the names right on any piece of Russian or Soviet hardware right. A lot of it also doesn't have a name, perse; Russians are pragmatic overall, and don't give fancy names to their hardware... Most of it ends up with insulting names from the troops because of odd shapes, or bad design flaws. EG: a certain tank who's autoloader was notorious for mangling the gunner's arm got the nickname of 'arm eater.' There was also a bomber who's onboard AC used pure ethanol, the crews would try to use the AC as little as possible and then skim the ethanol off to sell it as booze since they were not paid well by the Soviet union. In truth, the Hind handles like a bus, so while the Apache (and Cobra, Tiger, Rooivalk, Mangusta, and even the KA50 and Mi-28) can duck behind something to break line of sight, the Hind survives by screaming in at absurdly high speed for a helicopter, blowing away whatever is in front of it, and hauling ass out the other side before anyone can get a lock on it. You should convert those ships into dodecahedrons, specifically platonic solids, for better storage capacity and strength while doing so.

One thing that I'd like to add about Attack Helicopters: The reason for the gunner being sat up front, and the pilot in back is simple: Visibility. Both crew members need to be able to see what's around them with minimal blockage. To achieve this, the pilot is placed higher, and to the rear behind the gunner, who in turn gets the best field of view since his/her job in that seat is to scan for and engage threats. After all... in that envelope, the time from threat appears to the sudden and rapid disassembly of critical parts of your helicopter are measured in seconds... any delay in that envelope means death.

This channel is basically what happens when you combine Space Dock with The Black Pants legion. Breaking down ships with a whole lot of spite. I love it. I really wish writers of science fiction would do some military research and figure out what works and what doesn't. But this ship did it right.

@@SacredCowShipyards Very true. I mean it is fiction powered by magic so I understand why some writers and designers just forget about utility and logic when designing ships. It is supposed to be cool and look good on camera, not exactly be realistic. But it adds a certain level of believability and immersion when ship, tank and other weapon designs have a degree of thought and realism put into them. Allows you to suspend your disbelief a little better. With some science fiction shows I just completely lose immersion at times when I see a really stupid design that makes zero sense. Like the Base stars from BSG.

ILM modelers had a proclivity for kit-bashing model kits (mostly military vehicles). Colin Cantwell, one of the OT conceptual modelers, posted some photos of the 1975 pre-production models on "the cantina". If you have a good eye for vintage plastic-crack you can pick out individual portions of each kit: Slave I: Tamiya 88mm Flak Gun, Tamiya 20mm Flakvierling 38, Airfix Harrier. Falcon: Airfix Saturn V Rocket, Tamiya Matilda Tank, Tamiya 20mm Flakvieling 38, Fuman Panter G Porsche The propmaker forums have compiled vast lists in their quest to recreate the original models from the original scratch kits.

FWIW: When the Hind helicopter was developed, Soviet military doctrine as I understand it -- and I am certainly NOT an expert on the subject -- required that a helicopter perform multiple functions, and not just be a dedicated attack helicopter. That is why this aircraft became an _"assault helicopter."_ Late in the Soviet era -- or in post-Soviet era Russia -- dedicated attack helicopters were developed.

As you've done a few 40k bits.. maybe add in this machine's 40K Cousin, the Valkyrie? Very similar spec, twin cockpit, sliding flank doors, vehicle deployment, door gunners, payload out the wazoo on wings... Orbital capacity somehow assuming you remember to add the flank door glazing... Also comes in Vendetta (more blam) and Vulture (more blam, less troop) flavours.
