Installing crank bearings with a conventional oven and a freezer.
You'll never look at bearings the same... Raptor Motor Part 6
I took your advice and I replaced the bearing that I installed by driving it in from the inner race. This time around, I used different methods, and my gosh, these ways worked MUCH better than the other methods I've used.
For reference, the oven was set to 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes (Starting with a cold oven), and the new bearing was placed in a freezer for the same amount of time.

I’m glad that you did it the right way

Dude you did the right thing! That bearing no matter how softly you tapped it in, has had something done to it that it was not designed to cope with. Replacement for sure...... And thank you for posting this to show the peeps out there that, upon realization of a mistake, learning from it and acting by applying the correct action not only grows your psyche but shows humility too

Great video. Me, myself would have left the 1st bearing in. Reason being I never replaced one. Lol. As long as we have RU-vid. When time comes I'll have alllll the answers.

If you're anything like me, not replacing that bearing would always be in the back of your mind. We all make mistakes like that, and never regret making the effort to correct it. Plus there's a side bonus, now you know how effective heat differential can be when installing bearings!

Wow man that worked insanely well...its amaxing hiw you can apply simple science to a mechanical problem and get such an awesome result!! Keep up the great work !! I cant wait to hear that raptor thump!! Even more excited to see what your gonna do with the banshee!?!

A+++ man!!! that is great information to have, very glad to see you swapped the bearing out. I think you will be much happier in the long run. with as tight of tolerances like new school bearings have, that will make all the difference in the world. Also glad to see another technician out there striving like myself lol Keep em coming!

Heating the entire thing will help to eliminate possible cracking of the crankcase from localized heat.

lol i was typing to use the hot cold method and there you go doing it haha yeah it works really good most of the time sometimes you gotta tap it a little bit they slip together most of the time like they were meant to be hahaha and if your slipping a bearing over something like a truck axle or something then heat the bearing up and cool the axle.. so whatever is on the outer most part it gets the heat and whatever is on the inner most part gets the cold if that made sense haha

Deff good to do things right, just to be sure. I've never done, or left a bearing like that, nor do I condone it lol but in my opinion, I bet it would've been fine. Like u said, quality now days can be really top notch on bearings. Esp if their from Japan. Those balls are hardened to such extremes I've clamped one ball from a busted bearing with vice grips as hard as I could get the clamp to go, and then released and inspected it. And there wasn't even a scratch! My guess on integrity failure would be if it caused a fracture from hammering it like that. And u would never see the fracture even upon inspecting it. At least not while its in the race, in an engine case. Anyway, prob be fine but deff not worth the risk for a couple bucks and 2 hours of time. Glsd u swapped it!!!!

I agree man; even after recently re-visiting this video and seeing how I smashed it in there the first time; like you said, the quality of materials is so good these days, it probably would have lasted just fine but it was still the safer move.

ah cool, now i know who to talk to when we have a problem at work with a lift. lol. we do have a komatsu with a ton of electronics, it spits and sputters sometimes when in gear but as soon as you put it in neutral it revs to the moon.. we have had a few people work on it but it starts doing it again very soon. it's around a 5k lb 3 stage lift, on propane.. if that helps.

Why dont you torque bolts down to spec? Theyre set like that for a reason. Why do you round it up?
@MichaelSabo
@MichaelSabo 6 лет назад
Everything is the way it is for a reason; the factory exhaust is the way it is for a reason, but almost everyone modifies that. Air filters, tire pressure etc get tweaked in an effort to improve in some way. Just because the service manual says it, does not mean its the only or even the best way. That's why autos have recalls; sometimes the way things were made at the factory is not the best way. People modify things from the factory in an effort to improve over stock. In my experience and opinion, 7.2 pounds is a little too light for the cases. But this is just my opinion.
