I really enjoy your collaborations with Elite Fit Golf. In particular, this gapping session was very good. Today I'm doing a gapping session and loft/lie check on all my irons since our first men's club tournament is happening the end of March. Always good to make your equipment is in spec for the new golf season.

Adam has taught me so much about club making on his channel. Me and a buddy have split costs on a few tools to make our own little golf workshop. We have a swing weight scale and loft and lie bending tool. I just swapped iron shafts and it's been a blast learning all of this stuff. In my mind It's worth it to spend a few hundred dollars one time on the tools instead of spending who knows how much on taking clubs in to have someone else do it. Adam teaches you all the stuff you wouldn't even think about when it comes to clubs.

Great insight. Thank you. Just one reason why my Vokey’s have always been 50, 54, and 58 as it also is easier to match your irons of choice just a little bit better from a gapping perspective.

Like the subject. And the combo of two of my favorite experts. It was a puzzle for me too. I used to have just 2 specialist wedges, 52 and 58. my classic iron set had a 45 degree PW. My new iron set also had a 45 degree PW, but since it was hollow body, it easily went 5-10 meters further than the old PW. I thought I could fix it going to 50-54-58, but the 50 still had a gap that was too big. I had no club to predictabiy hit 90-95 meters. Now I've ended up with 47-54-58. The 47-PW gap is ideal, I can take a little off if needed too, and the 54 and 58 I usually do not need for full shots.

Great collaboration by 2 of my fave RU-vidrs! Most MANUFACTURERS aren't doing us any favors with only EVEN LOFTS. In the 90's Wilson offered a wedge in EVERY LOFT from 49 to 60. By the early 2000's as more equipment companies were bought out by BEAN COUNTING CORPORATIONS, the ODD LOFT wedges disappreared forcing US to customize EVEN LOFTED WEDGES. Furhermore: Ben Hogan is quoted saying "show me the man who hits full shots with his wedges...I want to play him for money!" I noticed way back in the 80's that a traditional WEDGE SHAPE did not fly as far as a BLADE or CAVITY BACK design. Therefore I now use LESS LOFT for the FIRST WEDGE. (Stock Blade wedge 47, GAP 50, SW 55, LOB 60) and YES BEN, I hit FULL SHOTS with them ALL!🤣

Matt enjoyed this. I depends on park golf terrain, my club course is 1890 extremely hilly course with very trick green approaches. Greens you can roll off Have the exact same wedges in the bag 44', 48',52', 56', 60' and i would be seen in bunkers with 8i and 9i too! (Irish links golf in strong winds) I lost my 5i out. I just went thru wedge gap fitting and ironically had same issue Mr. Short Game. My issue was my swing though and not the wedges. My fitter also gives lessons and pointed out a swing flaw that was robbing me 10 yards of distance. I'm 58 years old, a higher handicap, and my gapping is 10 yards off from you. I'm getting SM10s at 47, 51, and 55 but going to work on swing flaw.

Some people don't mind the offset change with removing loft on a wedge, but more often than not it just changes the look too much because of how the hosel and the leading edge are shaped. I would rather add loft to a wedge than take that much off because of that odd look with offset. That being said, I play the T150 and go 44 PW, 50 Gap, 55, 60, just so I can have a 4 iron at the top end. Very cool gaping session.

Interesting video Matt! So many things to play with in the short game, are you going to swap wedge shafts to Axiom's to match your irons? As i can imagine this tweaking things slightly. Also have you ever tried an iron set matching GW? I play T100s irons with a matching GW and love it to bits. Then go into a 54 & 58 / 60 (condition depending).

I agree with doing this a lot. My PW from my P-790's is 45 so I have wedges at 50, 55 and 60. I know 5 degrees is more than usual but it works for me. Although I've never been fitted like this for wedges.
@kdub3288

I also have P790 and because of that I went 50, 54, 58. I still have a slight issue though because I’ll hit my full P typically 125-130 and it seems like I’m only getting 105-110 with my 50, so there’s still a bit of a gap in distances. I used to only use a 52 and 56 with my old irons but I think the loft of the P was a 48.

Matt, have you switched to an X100 shaft in all your wedges? I recall the testing you and Adam did swapping out the standard wedge shaft for a 7/8i X100 shaft. Of course cutting the butt down to the right length. After watching that video, I swapped out the shaft in my 60°. It flies lower and spins more (prov 1) and I think it's more accurate directionally. I'm be doing my other two wedges shortly.

I have been through this process with the loft and lie machine. Mine were 60, 56 went to a 55 and the 52 went to a 50, with my pitching wedge at 46. My distance gapping in my opinion was spot on. The lie side of the equation is also very important,an upright or flat lie that doesn’t suit your swing, shaft lengths etc. is bad for you golf. It’s all important and not difficult to do as it is worth it.

But I still have too much of a gap between my P and my 50 for distance. Considering bending my 50 to a 48 or 49 and my 54 to 53 but leave 58 cause I typically won’t full swing that one anyways except when absolutely necessary.

I like the fact that he mentioned that his PW=44*. These club manufactures have spent the last decade strengthening the loft on irons to sell you how much further their newest irons go. They didn’t do anything except turn a PW into a 9…and still call it a PW.
@paulkellygolf
@paulkellygolf Месяц назад
A common mistake people make is buying specialty wedges that flow 4 degrees off their PW but the technology difference between some irons and specialty wedges is drastic and the 4 degree gap from PW to 1st wedge doesn't provide the gap you need. It's a good idea to always find the loft that provides the required distance off your PW and then gap the rest off that. Sometimes you may need a 46 degree specialty wedge to gap off a 46 degree PW. It all depends on the technolgy differences.

My 9 is 41, PW is 45, GW is 50, SW is 55, and LW is 60. I would probably like something between SW and LW. I almost never use my GW. 110-125 I use my PW. Inside there I am at my SW which can go anywhere from a 170 yard blade to a uber lofted 60 yard flop. LW is typically only used from inside 60 yards and I will either sky it to the moon for a total distance of 27 yards, or skull it through the clubhouse windows.

There’s nothing like this place where I live. So I just have to figure it out and order what I need. My gapping goes by 5*. 49* mizuno 225, 54* & 59* t22. My problem, I think, is the 49* 225 comes out hotter. So my yardage is like 115 (120 if I catch it good), 90, 75. My pitching wedge, btw, is around 125-130. Seems like I should get my gap wedge bent weaker, maybe? That would mess with the bounce though sounds like.

4* difference between mid/short irons is great but once you get into the wedges that gap needs to jump up to 5 or 6 degrees. a 48* wedge is pretty silly when the PW is 44. ive always thought 45-50-55-60 made the most sense, but then you take a guy like Tommy Fleetwood who only plays a 52 and a 60 just so he can have more options at the top end of the bag.

It is perfect for me and I do not miss the 60. I guess the idea is to do whatever gives you the most confidence. Great video. I think it is so important for us to tinker on this level and find what works best.

45 yards for 5 clubs is actually 11.25 yards progression since there are only 4 gaps between 5 clubs. Progression would be TY/(N-1). 45/(5-1) = 11.25. If you drop to 4 clubs then a perfect progression would be 45/(4-1) which is 15 yards per club.

5:40 5 wedges gives 4 gaps. So in a spread of 46 yards the "perfect gap" would be 11-12 yards between clubs, not 9 yards 🙂 So from the shown data one degree stronger SW and 1.5-2 degree stronger GW will give the perfecting gapping, if those strikes of course is representative of your regular average strikes on course. Likewise if you chose to drop one wegde as you discussed, the gapping would be 15-16 yards, which is a bit of a stretch.

You should either pull the 4 iron from the bag or the 60° based on the course that you will be playing.

Interesting, I have a 25 yard gap between my gap wedge and my pitching wedge so I learned to hit lovely three quarter pitching wedges 👍😂

What i miss is the pre club check if they are really the lofts and lie you say they are. And also you have something called memory of the steel in the hosel. Clubs will go back to there original loft and lie. especially if they are not forged clubs

My pitching wedge is 46, my approach wedge is 50, my sand wedge is 55, and lob wedge 60. works for me.

My problem is that I don't consistently hit any club well enough to say which one I want to lose, but I have a driver, 3 and 5 wood, then 3-9, pw, and the lazrus 3 pack (52,56,60) and a putter.

That's 15 clubs; you need to get rid of one to be legal for tournaments.

I'm a math teacher, thank you for going thru the numbers slowly to make sure that everyone knows that there is 4 degrees between them. Many people are very, very stupid. Just not the people that watch golf videos.
