A review of a fantastic book that I recently bought which includes vast numbers of charts, tables and resources which you can use with your games. This video should of been made much sooner but late is better than never.

I'm glad you found these books. I know of 3 books in the d30 series. All of them are beyond valuable to any DM for any setting

Honestly they are pretty important; wish there was more stuff like this.

My top fave system for traps is to roll - D6 for intention: 1-3 maims; 4-5 alarms; 6 kiIIs - if harm is there, roll D6 for *what* it attacks (count down the list of attributes and attack *that*) My second favourite system is to steal from Grimtooth's

In a pinch, just use a D6 and a D10. The D6= 1-2 for 1-10, 3-4 for 11-20, and 5-6 for 21-30. Might take a little getting used to, but in the old days we got used to it fast enough. I always found the D30 "too round". Great resource, thanks.

Agreed on the roundness. Best to roll the d30 in a tray. That or be ready to chase after it!

This is the way. They make d30s and they are awesome but unles you play DCC you don’t need one
@Marcus-ki1en
@Marcus-ki1en 7 месяцев назад
@@CaseyWilkesmusic Excuse me?! Of course you need one. If they make a die, you must have one for the dice bag. How many of us have d100's (even though they are impossible, and roll for ever)

D4 minus 1 also makes a good “tens” die for d30

Yeah I def agree that even if you don't use the Roll Tables in game (or 5-30 minutes presession), every option can help inform your improvisational skills. And yeah, in my experience in play & watching others games, D&D type adventuring games don't typically have engaging traps. When you use resources like this or the 5e DMG for unique Tricks/Traps it's usually a random one-off effect like a flame jet or collapsible floor. A longer lasting repeating trap which makes noise to attract monsters is probably good enough, especially if it can be weaponized in an encounter like a telegraphed blade trap that swings in certain areas on different initiative counts

One thing I noticed were the charts where the ones determines what it is, and the tens determine the value/size of the thing. This is great because for low level games you can just roll a d10 to get smaller or less valuable stuff (levels 1-3), then increase to d20 once they have a few levels (4-6), then finally the d30 when they start getting even higher level (7+). That way things better scale to the party and you don't randomly roll a full room trap or some gem that makes them vastly too wealthy (especially if treasure converts to XP), when the party is only level 1.

I have the D30 Sandbox Companion, and expect to make use of it if I'm ever able to assemble a game group again. Definitely planning to grab this one at some point coming up.

A good reference for traps is Courtney Campbell's "Tricks, Empty Rooms, and Basic Trap Design" or his expanded volume, "Artifices, Deceptions and Dilemmas"

Yeah I've seen Tricks, Empty Rooms and Basic Trap Design but I just find it to be a bit lacklustre honestly.

A note on alignment: I like to think of the Law/Chaos axis as COSMIC alignments, while Good and Evil are merely HUMAN alignments. Good and Evil are about what you do when you interact with other people. Law and Chaos are based around gods and their inscrutable machinations and work more like a religious affiliation or a side in a cosmic war. In other words, Chaos is still Chaos, but Law...is Cosmos.

Great books! I hoarded a load of pdfs at some point so it's good to get these reminders. One of my GMing projects has been to learn the lazy way of creating dungeons. What I'm most missing now is a suitable tool for generating the map. I'm happy Dolmenwood campaign book has great tools for most of this but not the map creation. I just did a really nice solo dungeon run using a Dysonlogos map, those Dolmenwood dungeon generation tables and a bit of flavoing from the Raging Swan's Dungeon Dressing book.

Just as a bit of history, I picked up my first d30 back in the mid 80s. It was a "crystal" style die produced by The Armory. They also produced a companion book called "The Armor's 30 Sided Dice Gaming Tables" and served a similar purpose to the D30 books produced by Richard LeBlanc (though at 40 pages it wasn't nearly as comprehensive). In it were tables for things like Critical Hits; Gemstones, Jewelry and other Treasure; Height and Weight tables fro various species; Disease and Poison severity; various random equipment tables and magic items, and so forth. It was a cool little book. As for a traps resource, I'd recommend "The Game Master's Book of Traps, Puzzles and Dungeons" by Jeff Ashworth.

I bought the companion version of this and then tried to pdf print it via a printing site. He'd protected it so you can't do that for some reason. Was feeling quite let down as the physical book is very pricey for its size and hard to get.

The only thing I dont like about the specialized magical weapons concept is the 'golf-bag' mentality it can engender "ooh Undead let me put out my +4 driver of undead slaying ....

rolling on charts is good when you got writer's block, But i for one am not a big fan of relying on them. It can get to a point where it becomes to randomized to much computation and loses it soul.
