Recognize your emotions and feel them. That is very important. See where you feel them. Don't judge just feel. Let it come and don't force it to go away with stimuli (impulses) out of these emotions and don't act to fast out of these emotions if they are bad habits. Then you'll see that you are closer to yourself and can start taking actions that feel more close to home.

This is how I stopped smoking weed. It’s the only drug I take, but damn was I addicted pretty hard to it. Severely. But sitting with my emotions is more important than numbing them with artificial ones. However just spending time being conscious when I smoke, I did realize that it smells bad hurts my throat burns like hell and makes it hard to breathe. This is all obvious, but to most people who smoke they ignore these signs and wait for the high to come. Funny thing is I can go for a run now and the high will come. Every single time.
@IthinkIneedAhug

@@PROFESSIONALCRASHOUTooo, if I may, I would like to add a flip side perspective, not to argue, but just a different experience. My dad got diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. I was staying with them once a week for a while due to work..I would take an edible there, and eventually just got comfortable talking to my parents while high. For me, it helped me process through some really hard and uncomfortable feelings and thoughts. I was able to be introspective about my relationship with my parents and who they are as people without anger, shame, or guilt. I absolutely use it as a bandaid most of the time, and I try to be aware of when and why I'm getting high, but those handful of nights, it was pretty beneficial for me.

Ever noticed that when you drink? I noticed like as a man, all my “manly”drinks taste bitter and taste like I ate someone’s ass. This is really well said and I think clears up a lot of the confusion here in the comments. It's about discernment through paying attention to what your self actually wants, so you can make that choice in the moment, rather than be influenced by in the moment gratification or what an external source is telling you what you want. You have to pay attention to yourself so that you can ignore the impulses that are out of alignment with what you want long term.

I agree with this to an extent, I feel like this is what I was master of when I was younger. I had a 7 hour concentration span, highly disciplined etc. But I've come into adulthood not knowing myself and with a great deal of shame. I think discipline was my coping mechanism for my surroundings but also a crutch and stopped me from knowing my social self or just feeling any sort of ease within myself. I can go back to discipline because I've known it, I definitely overshot on the lack of discipline later in life- I'm sure there's an in between too where you can know yourself as well

It's very hard to not get on a computer or on my phone all day. These things are extremely difficult and just saying to ignore impulses that you've been used to dealing with on a daily basis isn't enough to convince me when it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Interrupt your own line of thinking when this happens. So let's say you just came off a bad loss on league. Before you decide to make it up, commit to doing a 2 min chore. You may just decide you want to get other stuff done. And even if you go back to league, you just crossed something off the list anyway, and can do it at regular intervals (everytime a game ends).

This is horrible advice. Ignoring yourself is NOT what stoicism is about, it's the dead opposite of what meditation is about. DO NOT IGNORE YOURSELF. LISTEN TO YOURSELF. One of the biggest problems of humanity is that we ignore ourselves and eachother far, far too much and foundationally, we constantly ignore so much of our own emotions and intellects. What you need to do is not ignore yourself, but rather sit down and listen to yourself, regularly try to listen to yourself on deeper and more comprehensive levels, then communicate with yourself. Seek self comprehension, acceptance, and improvement. Then, seek collective comprehension and improvement, together.

As a patient of depression, I want to emphasize this can be REALLY BAD for mental health. I tried being very rigorous to suppress my impulses, only ended up with my unclear mind. Also I dislike the misleading title. Thumbs down and will flag.

Although the term mortification of the flesh, which is derived from the King James version of Romans 8:13[8] and Colossians 3:5,[9] is primarily used in a Christian context,[10] other cultures may have analogous concepts of self-denial; secular practices exist as well. Some forms unique to various Asian cultures are carrying heavy loads and immersion in water.

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” -Matthew 16:24-25 NKJV ❤

Hello? If you figure out HOW to ignore yourself all the time? Suicide time for what are you living for? It's more a question of moderation. I LIVE for myself so if I ignored myself all the time? What am I LIVING FOR? Instead I learned how to redefine my goals in life and make them more achievable. Instead of trying to have EVERYTHING? I instead aim for what's important to me and if it happens to be something big? I also know I'll be saving for a long time for it as I also make sure it is something achievable and STILL live within my means. If it's not? Go down to the next best thing you want. It called controlling your desires WITHOUT killing them. A person with no desires in life? Truly scary person to me.

Be aware of your impulses and desires, yet somehow never let them control and get the better of you. Sure, this is Cardinal Virtue of Temperance that people knew back when... still, knowing it and practicing it are two very different things. That is to say, I too wish it were so simple: when I'm having a bad day, and dopamine seeks to entice me into relapsing back into bad habits and vices... dude, it's REALLY DIFFICULT not to let the Dark Side in -- sometimes I win only by the hair in my back.

One of my issues has actually been almost the opposite, brought on by depression, which is apathy. And yes I know it isn't the same thing but sometimes it's hard to parse between what's just an impulse and what's a legitimate need, especially when none of it feels super fulfilling anyway...

That's so wild, what do companies think would happen, hypothetically, when additives have the masses overeating & everyone becomes obese consumers that can't move, can't work for the money to buy things, and inevitably die... I guess that's too hypothetical cus it isn't having that exact, cartoon like effect. But dammit, I'm tired of wanting chocolate all the time!

Ok, so I ignore myself, cool, sounds good, solid advice. But now what? I’m not sure what I should use to guide my attention then? (Outside of my main responsibilities obviously)

Yeah, but is it such a bad thing? Why wouldnt I want to just do whatever made me happy, because my heart said so? Why wouldnt I want to be impulsive?

Isn't this just...dissociation? Then i guess I'm doing alright. I ignore myself all the time. Sometimes i don't drink water, eat, or shower. Sometimes i blink and the day has passed me by. Sometimes i over eat. I eat without thinking until i throw up. I ignore the self harm i do to myself when ever I'm stressed. I don't realize i hurt myself until im cooking and i feel spices touch a raw spot. Sometimes I'm reading, playing video games or watching videos and don't realize how much time has passed until it's super late and I've held my pee in until my bladder hurts. And then i get stressed about the things I should've done and i end up eating shitty food to cope or stay up all night numbingly watching videos again 😂 I ignore my sleep deprivation until i passed out at work...I don't think ignoring yourself is good advice. I'm on the verge of quitting therapy man. They say the same shit with no real way of getting results. Pay over $100 per session. What a fucking scam.

I think I have stumbled into a cheap version of this due to ADHD, I've learned to be able to ignore impulses for long periods of time due to wanting to continue my activity or whatever I'm doing, laziness maybe?

Wait, is that why I don't get cravings for fast foods? Because i barely ever consume them so additives aren't entering my system. Whereas my sister cannot live without satisfying her cravings. My childhood friends almost went into a depression like state because she couldn't eat junk food during strikes (not the pandemic).

um, you shouldn’t give into impulses m, but “ignoring” them us super unhealthy. they must be acknowledged. repression and denial is very unhealthy. it also doesn’t work.

Not to be a contrarian to what he's saying, but I used the Samsung Health app to heavily track my exercise, diet, water intake, sleep, etc, and I learned a lot about myself. My phone (with the app) became like a best friend who knows me well. I've lost the weight that was killing me and I'm able to dance around and enjoy music again.

That's why I never eat fast food, quit years ago and never going back. They put sugar in literally everything (at least in the USA) so it makes you crave it and want to keep going back there.

Ignoring yourself is not healthy. Ask any tradwife that gets discarded midlife. Mindfulness and awareness is what he's actually talking about where you observe yourself and understand your emotions and make decisions with awareness, not impulses.

AKA self-control. Or as it would’ve been referred to back when the stoics and yogis figured it out - mastering yourself.

GG Paychologist, the first step is to know oneself. To be able to discern oneself from what is and isn't. Assuming the role of a detached observer effectively allows for clarity that by itself helps with self regulation, and surely emotional regulation. Anyway... To wrongly ignore elements that are not ourselves means to become blind to the purpose of this practice/philosophy in the first place. Like it is mentioned, to identify triggers, impulsive urges, stimulants that elicit responses, manipulation or projections of others that is coercive and compelling, and other elements of influence that one would be susceptible to. Ignoring what essentially we seek to identify would be an exercise in vain. Learning and settling into oneself will automatically help your mind to learn how to shield itself from sources external manipulation, which I think is what this video is trying to get at. How to be anchored and stable in your reality and self identity. Cheers.🎉

I learned this about two months ago, at the age of 22. I feel proud of myself because I finally have control over my life: I stopped smoking weed and playing games all day so I'm no longer ruining my brain and potential, I started writing again because that's my only talent and the only thing I'm good at. Nevertheless I still feel stupid; when the "post nut clarity" reached me I realize that a lot of people develop the ability to ignore and control unhealthy impulses by the age of 18 when they get into university or even before. I'm at least four years behind my generation in that regard, I lost three years of university and barely managed to not get kicked out. Time flyes. The best advice I can give is to stop thinking in today's time, think what you want your future self to be like.

A lot of us have tried to stop overeating based on willpower alone. But as you have even stated in this video, most foods have chemicals, spices, or other addictive properties that make overeating more harmful. It’s not simply a case of mindset when your body is physically being altered on a daily basis. You can have a strong mind, but if you have a weak body, you will always give into your body’s cravings. But I do agree that at

This is only partly true. I wouldn't recommend ignoring a lot of your body's and mind's signals a lot, because they send it for a reason. That is how burn-outs happen, because people ignore the signals their bodies give.

Another example of advice that is not universal. Some people are ignoring their impulses habitually and this translates to lack of Intuition for your own needs. Especially people with a background of neglect do this and they end up sick and burned out
