In this weeks video I wanted to address some of the most common mistakes that ive seen golfers make over the years. I've been lucky enough to spend countless hours on the course helping golfers with their games, and I see these 5 mistakes happening time and time again.
These 'easily made mistakes' are costing you shots every time you play, but the good news is they are easily avoided to o when you know the right strategy and how to deal with these situations
So there are 5 mistakes, but more importantly 5 pieces of avice that you can use in your very next round to play better and lower those scores
Enjoy and as always just drop into the comments if you have any questions

Good as always. My best "tool" in lowering handicap was also to take one more club (than you think is good for any given distance) virtually on every shot. Surprisingly, I still very rarely fly it over the green but instead have fewer bogeys on the score card. Ego management is even more important than course management sometimes.. 😂

I think that one tip alone could help the majority of golfers, especially when you look at course design, trouble is often at the front

I just started doing just that! I play for the back of the green and end up in the middle ( I’m not a long hitter) I used to play to the pin and end up short.

Regarding #1; along with aiming toward the sand trap on the left, I would also suggest teeing the ball up on the right side of the tee box. The tee box is our only opportunity to place the ball anywhere we want. I was taught to determine where I might get into trouble, place the ball on that side of the tee box, and then hit on a line angling away from that trouble. The same holds true for my shot shape.

Very true, you see good players do this all the time, may only change the hole by a few degrees but can make all the difference

Great info, my issue with number 1 is that I have no idea what my miss will be on any particular day! Currently I miss roughly 25% left a third right and the rest somewhere in the fairway, how would you set yourself up for that?

Good work Chris, thank you. I also recommend guy’s listening to Bob Rotela audio The Golfers Mind on RU-vid… brilliant and helped me a lot!

My best tip - play the yardage to the back of the green. Saw it on RU-vid last year and got my handicap down.

Excellent course management. Using a hybrid instead of a wedge can be better than a putter if fringe has some longer grass. Thanks for such good advice

Thanks, and agreed, hybrid can be a good choice from just off the green

#6 🤷🏼‍♂️Don’t play your BEST shot … ☝🏻 play for your AVERAGE shot. I see this all the time … Most people step up to every par-4 and par-5 with a DRIVER 😮 Not me. I hit 1 out of 3 fairways with driver. I am notorious for hitting 5-wood off the tee (with which I hit 50% of fairways) I also have a reputation of hitting OVER greens (taking too much club) 🙄 “Don’t aim at flags” Use “Green light, Yellow light, Red light” (“go for it”, “iffy”, “danger”) … and be honest with it. Good stuff, Chris 👍🏻 Oh, and keeping data helps too. I have ARCCOS, but before that we’ve always kept fairways, greens, putts. Problem is our stats rarely change year-over-year 🤷🏼‍♂️

Chris, i love your approach, but no. 5 baffles me. I can barely visualize a shot after i hit it, much less before. Sure, i have a general idea of ball flight, but even after 40 years of golf, it still feels random until i am within 50 yrds. I've learned to find teachers that don't depend on visual imagery. That's part of what i like about your videos. So many are about feel and positioning. Thanks for all of them.

Hey Rich, definitely get this type of comment a lot, and visualising the shot is as much about the process as it is actually seeing the shot. Take me for example, I tend to visualise the start line, curve, height, where it will land, how it rolls etc, I can easily go 4/5 rounds of golf without ever hitting the shot that I see, so it’s not about not knowing what shot is going to ‘happen’ but more about the fact that the process gets me focussed, means that I’m less likely to be distracted, switch off or not concentrate I use it as a way to get really into the shot. It may not be for you, but I’d encourage you to try and the fact that you don’t know what shot you will hit shouldn’t really change that Chris

I'm sorry your first comment I can't agree with. If you slice the ball you swing out to in. The more you aim your body left the more you will swing out to in and the more your ball will slice. Terrible advice. Fix swing path not alignment. Love most of your videos
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 2 месяца назад
Hey Glen, appreciate your comments but I’m afraid that’s just not true. If I ask a slicer to aim at a target, their path may be 5/6 degrees out to in, causing the slice, if I then select another target that is further left then their path will still be 5/6 out to in to that target, why would it suddenly be more out to in that the previous swing? Agreed it would be more out to in to the ‘intended’ land point, but that’s the whole idea. I’ve definitely heard this school of though before but it’s not true I’m afraid, all I’m suggesting is select a different target, that will not change the club path at impact. Imagine playing a hole then the next hole plays out 45 degrees to the left on the course map, for the tee that target is way left compared to re first hole, but that doesn’t mean the path would now be 50 degrees left! It’s a new target, new routine, new set up and the same swing

@@ChrisRyanGolf I get what you are saying. I worked hard at getting my path right and it is but when I used to compensate by aiming more left I would either slice more or pull it dead left. I have some golf buddies now who when they try to aim left they will either slice it more or pull it left. They won't spend the time to fix there path but for me I used to struggle with the issue aiming more left made the problem worse and when I watch them try it makes problem worse. I don't know if it's more out to in path but it certainly doesn't put them in play
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 2 месяца назад
@@glennjenkins3991 hey Glen, this comment is one that I can relate to, in my experience there is a difference out on the curse between just ‘aiming more left because you slice it’ and actually going through your routine having selected a new target, fully 100% committing to that and essentially making your ‘normal’ swing. I’ve seen great result with that approach but it is different to simply aiming more left because of a slice. If the slice gets worse then this tells me there is a disconnect between the selected target and the golfers mental picture or that they are not fully committed to the new target that they have chosen

@@ChrisRyanGolf yes that I agree with. Thank you

When you are a slicer it's hard to commit yourself to aim left out of play and swing normal.

That’s a shame Patrick, these are the lessons that genuinely would help many golfers improve the quickest, decision making, strategy etc Do you disagree with any of the points in this video? Just curious as to why this isn’t one of my best?
