I have a $45K car but it's paid for in cash. The average new car nowadays costs about $48K. New cars are expensive now, it's not like it was before, and I feel if people can't pay it off in a year or a year and a half, then they shouldn't be getting a new car. Or even a used car that cost $45K. Get something that's about $10k to $15K.

Boy, I know how this goes. When my spouse and I were building our home, we were constantly making cash purchases as we went along for things that were not in the original construction loan. Example: we estimated 5k for floor covering. When it came time to put our flooring in, the cost was like 2 k more. So, we had to come up with cash for that. It is difficult to estimate and control your building costs. And I would bet this is a major part of caller's stress. They should sit down and work out on paper what they agree to cap these overages at and on what. Caller is feeling like they are on a run-away train.

@@mattschmitt9924I agree, except that the equity, assuming they complete the project, is not realized until the project is done. If the construction loan is 400k, and they expect to have built in 20% sweat equity by the time its done, it means the home would be worth 480k when they are finished.

@@DoctorSmartyPants Yeah. That's how equity in real estate works. Depends on what way you do the math if it's $480 or $500 - you're just splitting hairs about a few minutes one sided call with someone that doesn't understand finance. I don't really care what way the 20k goes as it has no change on my world. You asked a question. I tried to answer you. Have a great rest of your day.

@@mattschmitt9924 I did not ask a question. That was someone else. I also tried to answer the original question, as well as commenting on your comment. But I agree, who knows how much equity they will have until they are done. I know how these things work.
