thanks, i really needed this, sometimes i get kinda crazy and play super loose and end up trying to chase some ridiculous draw hand with few outs against calling stations at a 1-2. playing tight and narrow is boring but its better than being broke

I agree with the premise but too little emphasis on position. If you can't play 77, 98s, A3s etc from the button when folded to you, then sure. But then your problem is to learn poker. My .02

i have been playing this concept for two years now at 2-5nl and consistly beating the game.the only thing different i do is for the first two hours i will paly alot of hands with a huge range while using the small ball theory and showing alot of my hands.then really narrow my range later on and get all the chasers to pay large amounts of over bets wen im actually holding the nuts.thus has really worked well for me in the past two years

This guy is spot on for the lower stake games, even more so for live 1/2. When I go down to the local casino to play 1/2 around the pay day dates of the month, my play has to change to compensate for these semi-business men who seem to call you down with top pair raggy kicker when there are 4 cards to a straight. Although its boring you're there to make money and not to make fancy plays against these drunk calling stations who are out on a works party.
@NaihanchinKempo

one reason is any hand that calls your raise will be ahead of KQ so the range that calls has AQ AK in it (dead meat then)..and the pairs that call 10s to Aces are slightly to massively ahead at least preflop
@Jlwweb
@Jlwweb 11 лет назад
They can get a better read on you when you have a narrow range. However, they are more likely to be bluffed out if they think you are a really tight player with a bunch of scare cards on the board. Just depends. His advice is sound for sure. It also depends how you bet it too, the right bets can throw reading off.

It's a tough one with the $1/2 games. It's a donk fest with half the table limping in with any two cards even if you raise 3, 4, even 5 times the big blind. I've forgotten the number of times I raised like that with AA, KK or AK, only to lose to a fucktard with 74o who calls all the way to the river and get 2 pair. Or some dumb shit calling with K3c, call all the way to the river although he hasn't hit anything and they get runner runner flush. Or those who think their 83o is good enough to call an all-in raise preflop and hit trip 3s against AK. They say donks are there for easy profit. But shit. Even if you lose to one donk per table, they outnumber you easily 10:1. That's 10 tournaments lost to one donkey at a time...

good summary Joe, 2-5 cash game , 99 makes it 20, Kings raise to 40, 8 2 calls, and I raise to 140 with AA, and only 99 folds. on flop KK fold but 82 calls

Joe E there's a reason the pros don't play 72offsuit, and it's because it's a losing play. if donks call you down with weak hands and get lucky, be happy you're in that game. 80% of the time aces are gonna be winning against those weak hands, 2/3 of the time AK will win against two unpaired cards. there's gonna be more variance when people play loose, but if you think that donks are impossible or even hard to beat with a narrow range you either have some serious leaks or you haven't played enough to get through the variance.
@ChannelJoeE

+David Morasch. I agree with you 100%...albeit, only in theory. You'd be 100% correct in cash games where I can simply re-buy-in after getting donked, and exploit that donk's tendency to play rubbish to destroy him. Alas. I rarely ever play cash games. I only ever mainly play MTT. Perhaps, I should just move up in stakes and just get outplayed, as then I can at least admit that I've been outplayed. At micros, you rarely ever come up against the same person twice. I may "survive" coin flips with 2, 3, 4, 5 donks, it just takes 1 more to make completely reckless/-EV play, yet, boots me out of the tournament. And I'll never face that player again. Take this one for example. Last Saturday, I played $7.50 Progressive KO. Survived the shit storm that is donks going all-in with any Ax, Kx, any pair, any suited connectors. Made it past the final 50... Final 50!! I thought all the donks were gone by then. Blinds are $10,000/20,000. I have about $150,000. I'm in BB. UTG limps in. Everyone folds to SB, who limps in. I raise 3xBB with AK. UTG, who clearly showed weakness by just limping in UTG goes all-in. I put him on Kx. I called. He turns KT. He flopped two pair with KTQ flop. I mean, what can I do? Or maybe me calling that all-in with AK was a -EV move and I was the donk? In any case, my point is, there are just too many of them. And it only takes one of them to totally suck you out and that's my tournament finished...
@least_bw1775
@least_bw1775 7 лет назад
Joe E you're not wrong that you got coolered there, especially like 8 blinds deep there's no way you're folding tptk. two things though: first off complaining about donks kicking you out of a tourney isn't worth the energy. you're gonna lose almost every MTT you play. it's a pretty luck based style with how fast blinds go up. even if you're twice as good as a standard player in a 100 person MTT, a small one, you're only gonna win 2% of the time. plus it sounds like if you're getting excited about making the final 50 they're much bigger, meaning you'll lose more often. it takes a ridiculous amount of coin flips to win an MTT. second, you should really be open shoving AK 7.5 big blinds deep. in that situation it wouldn't have mattered, but in situations where neither of you flop a pair it's much easier to play strong hands like broadways when there's no more betting.

i think it also has to do with what types of tables that the professionals are playing at, which determines how wide these poker players ranges are. High stakes cash tables with their widest range while lower limits or larger full ring tables with less range

I play well in a shorthanded 3-5 player scenario so I get frisky with a k7, 107 suited, ect. But in a 6-9 handed game I raise after I get my image of a solid player with 4/5, 5/6, 6/7, 7/8 (♥ these hands even unsuited) when I have good position or a good feeling so when I hit, & c bet they automatically presume bluff.

Great video for beginners,a tight range will make most of your games easier, then if your opponents only see you showing down good cards and they start to fold more to your raises,Therefore losing value on your good hands,, pick a spot and bet into then with nothing. Next step play a few SitNgoes without looking at your hole cards. good luck at the tables everyone.

the reason they can play any 2 cards is because they have very good table awareness and can read their opponents. if they know their opponent is weak they can bluff and vise versa, if the opponent is strong they can get out of the hand.

This lesson is titled: 'How to be predictable and lose all your money' ;) I understand the point but.....I would recommend lowering your stakes if you are not comfortable playing say Q10 or 67... Just my opinion. Playing premium only is boring and not very profitable (IMHO). You will get to see a lot of cards and learn though....I would say this is the best lesson you'll learn from this advice

Don't fold JJ pre-flop unless there's huge aggression from other players. You just have to play it and be able to let it go if the situation warrants it. Most players hate JJ because they end up losing when they keep calling when they should fold it.
@freddii89

Study your opponents when your not playing, watching how they play cetain hands (if you see what they showdown), light table chat, grab some food and drink, take an ipod, basically just make yourself at home at the table, keep yourself amused. Just going to a table and sitting there folding folding folding will be really boring, so just get comfortable and enjoy yourself, makes it easier to wait for the good spots to play and you'll play better when you have a hand if your in a positive move. =)

JJ is a fantastic hand if played right. Most people put too much value on it though, and treat it like pocket kings. Just be prepared to toss them like you would 10s or 99.

Toughest lesson to learn........and one of the great ironies of poker......you'll make more money, and be a better player...by playing less hands. Very tough to do, very difficult concept to grasp......get fired up to go to the card room and play cards......and the smartest thing to do is play less hands. It's a struggle, it takes tremendous patience and will and is easily the biggest leak at the lower limit tables. Blake- what's the best way to keep folding until we are in the best spots? Thx!

Yep. No sense in playing shit like 9-6s if you need trips or better to make any kind of play and still aren't good enough to know where you're at. Better off narrowing your range to hands that tend to win showdowns and keeping most pots small. I think this is especially true online because for me personally at least it is much more difficult to put a player on a specific hand. Ranges tend to be pretty crazy because many people think the same way as the guy you replied to.

@TankAssTanner
@TankAssTanner 10 лет назад
While definitely true, to echo the other person's reply, the biggest mistake at low stakes is to assume that the other players at the table are good players and are making reads on you. Usually there will be 1, maybe 2, other solid players, but most there are simply recreational and are completely oblivious. Playing tighter overall against weak players is good in the long run. Now you can mix it up later, which I like to do after showing down the goods consistently after a decent amount of time. If I sense weaker players have finally picked up on the fact I am playing tighter and keep folding to my bets with made hands, THEN that is the time to go in weak and make a move every orbit or two.

Poker 'coaches' remind me of Tony Robbins but without the success. They mostly just sell encouragement. If you think you need a coach.....save your money and play 1000s or microstake hands. as good advice as this is for online poker it doesnt work for live play imo. ill draw an ace or pocket pair like 1 time in an hour and flop air. when i do hit the flop which happens maybe once every 2 hours everyone folds. i think the key sometimes is to limp and catch big hands or get out cheaply. and also to know your opponents and when you can bluff. waiting for a big hand doesnt work in live games unless ur just crazy lucky.
@SchoolofCards
@SchoolofCards 12 лет назад
The average players is not always capable of making "good reads" The better you are at reading opponents the more you can open your range. You don't gain value by making good reads. The goal is to extract maximum value. You do this by making good reads. If you have a hard time making good reads. Like many players. You need to narrow your range. It's a very simple principle.

Ok, what about situations where I have, let's say AQs on SB and and a hyper agressive guy makes a bet on CO , BTN calls, should I repop him ? Basically I think I should always 3-bet him if I am last in the pot with him, but the guy on a BTN makes a call and has position. I also know that BTN knows the guy befor him is a hyper and the question I seldom ask myself is, why is he just calling ?

@nomakym
@nomakym 12 лет назад
Maybe you should read a poker book, those are both fine hands, just don't overplay them like they are automatically the winner. KQ is nothing, not high card nor a pair, you need to wait for the right position, and board, and Jacks on down to deuces you can play the same, wait for a set to go all in, depending on the board and circumstances of course.

@Foreverguga1 You are completely missing the point of this video. Most people aren't good enough to realize that the blinds are nits or how to properly adjust to the nits when they 3bet you from the big blind. If you feel comfortable its perfectly acceptable to open your range. For most amateur players when they tend to open their range without truly understanding the game they begin to hemorrhage cash.
@GrandmaBetty1945

@SchoolofCards What type of stakes are you talking about? I feel comfortable opening my range at NL50 and higher because I get a feel for players tendencies but lower than that the only way to go is to be a nit and outplay everybody based on better hand selection indeed. Vs bad players opening my range is indeed a bad idea from my experience But I assume your advice does not apply to micro/low stakes

LOL @ this! Yes, lots of "great players" out there who "don't need cards" to "win." When they start failing to understand your aggression they fall back on their shitty habits of calling from OOP and decide to "outplay" you. You invariably find these "great players" in the micros and they're always so "unlucky" When they try to outplay a guy raising wide OTB who sucks them in with a disguised hand. But they make "correct folds" vs almost any face card when they have you "figured out." Love it.

How do you advise playing super super small stakes, like $3 mtts and single table tournaments, or like .05/.10? I’ve only played online so I don’t know if these games even exist in in real life. Do you still just play strong hands against them? I’m just trying to learn so I have to play these tiny stakes but all the lessons online basically tell you how to play against players who are playing much higher stakes and obviously are better and more serious players in general. I’m guessing you just play everyone on tiny stakes like LAG’s until you get information on them

In a 1/2 or 2/5, you know there are alot of tight players who only open with top 8 hands, so why not play the 67 suited and call 7BB pre to win his stack if you hit. You only invested 7BB to win 200-300BB because you know fish aren't folding AA or AK if they hit an A or a K.....not ever. I've been called down to the river with people who hold on to AK no matter how much or how many bullets you fire, they think Ace high is good, or that 1 pair is good in 4 way heavy action post flop play.

A question: If all idiots in Vegas play all kind of ranges why should I only play top 10%. I should play all hands that dominated their range. Wich means if they play KJ,KT..Kx etc i should also play KQ against those oponents. Also to play pairs for setvalue vs fish who never fold is another goldmakeing play.

DEPENDS ON LOTSA THINGS: POSITION,TABLE IMAGE,WHETHER YOU'RE UP OR DOWN..3-BETTING CAN BE A GOOD WEAPON.YOU CAN ALSO GET YOUR NOSE BIT OFF.THAT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU LEAST NEED IT TO HAPPEN. SAYING YOU DO ANYTHING "ALOT" MEANS YOU'RE CONSISTENT & PREDICTABLE.. BAD. INSTEAD YOU SHOULD BE UNPREDICTABLE,CONSTANTLY CHANGING GEARS & KEEPING PEOPLE OFF-BALANCE & OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE IN POTS AGAINST YOU.YOU NEED TO CHANGE UP DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES.. OTHERWISE.. NOT GOOD.

I would say that 10% is not enough. You hardly get any action while you have a hand.
