Hello Friends,
Thank you so much for joining me for yet another video! Today I wanted to talk about feeling like whatever money you make isn't good enough. I have had to have to talk with myself so many times, so I wanted to bring this conversation here with you all so talk it out as well!

Yeah, most are “fake it til u make it” types and I feel like that’s not a great mindset. You don’t need hyper expensive clothes, especially trendy hyper expensive clothes-it’s better to invest in great quality basics that you can wear for years and will last a lifetime!

Girl that's why I'm not letting the girlies set me up for the okie doke with all this "black girl luxury" bs. Do I love luxury? YES, who doesn't? But I also love being able to pay my bills. I heard one girl say some of us are "luxury shaming" or something like that. No boo, we just ain't got it, and we're being realistic. That's why I avoid all that luxury girl content at all costs. I'm not even about to splurge on Amazon, because those coins add up too! You're right. Some people just need to put their phones down and go outside in the real world.

Things can get elitist and classist real quick in those spaces. And it’s true, we can humbly admit that we don’t have it, but the way some people say it it’s like “if you’re broke, just say that.” Yes, we know, but not in that regard… and the definition of luxury came in so many different things to so many different people. It all started with those damn Birkin bags, lol.

I love your thoughts! I just started making 10K a month and there’s no $1500 maintenance happening here lol. Also, I read the book “The Millionaire Next Door” and learned that most millionaires live a middle class lifestyle. Even 1500 maintenance has me thinking what cost that much? Even if i got a silk presses every 2 weeks and my nails done every two weeks I’m only spending $500 on all that. But i do my own hair and get my nails done every 3 weeks currently so really I’m spending $150 a month. I do my own waxes. Don’t see a need paying for it. My job pays for my gym membership. I don’t like getting my lashes done. I don’t feel like i need facials. Like i really don’t know what I’d spend 1500 a month on unless I’m buying a new bag every month😂

I deleted my instagram and I haven’t been happier. Influencers love to show off their “perfect” lives, husbands, homes, children. I got tired of seeing the perfect lifestyles and felt like I was becoming mad and jealous so I deleted my instagram, it was the best decision for my mental health.

My boyfriend hates social media and I didn’t realize how addicted I was. We agreed to a cleanse and I feel less anxious, more confident in my skin, and I’ve had so much time to do hobbies of my own. Things that have been on my to-do list for the past 6 months have gotten done in 2 weeks. I logged back in and either deleted or deactivated all of my accounts. 10/10 I recommend.

Yhhh I did that for TikTok. I deleted it for 8 months cause I was spending too much time on it and re-downloaded it. Now I barely go on it. It’s mainly RU-vid now but that still makes me feel better than these other apps.

It's very interesting and kind of sad that influencer culture relies so much on projecting the image of superiority and making people feel less than. I'm just so over it at this point. I just don't want to be flexed on anymore. I don't like how it makes me feel. I also don't want to flex on anyone else. I feel like flexing only attracts envy and people who just want to take from you. I just want to be entertained and connect with others in an authentic way. I've been trying to tailor my social media feeds to reflect this. Thank you for this. This video was a great reinforcement that I'm doing the right thing!

I totally agree with everything you said. I feel like we were all in the shadow realm for a while, totally enveloped and consumed by consumerist capitalism. It was truly an era of the Haves and the Have Nots, and if you didn’t have it it put you into despair. But hyper consumption and FOMO was being slapped on our faces 24/7. I think there was something for everyone that people were pining for. Whether it was traveling to exotic and thrilling locations, eating the most delicious and out of reach foods, going to rooftop parties and hanging with “the best of them“, the most high-end makeup with the most designer, accessories, large houses with amenities you didn’t even know you needed, and beautiful looking relationships of people seeming to have it all… Whatever you loved and adored as a person there was a sphere of influence on social media that highlighted the best and brightest of it. It was truly an embarrassing time when most of us had a hard time being grateful for what we already had.

@Trinity M I think you’re mistaking people who just happen to be wealthy and the entire influencer culture which exists primarily to brag and boast on others to fuel inferiority and elitism. We’re talking about, particularly and specifically influencers, not people who have wealth outside of the social media sphere. If someone takes you on an apartment or a house tour of their regular home, then you know they’re just trying to show you where they live. But you definitely know when people are trying to say “look at me and all that I have, don’t you wish you could live like me?” There’s no coincidence that most content by influencers after they reach a certain mark is heavily based on the bags they’ve bought, the cars they drive, and the places they go. When they didn’t have anything, the camera sitting on their dashboard was good enough, the same background in the regular room was good enough, and the regular food they ate like everyone else was good enough. It sounds like you’re shaming us for a discussion that we weren’t even having. No one is talking about wealthy people who just so happened to be wealthy and well off. The conversation is basically talking about influencer culture and their attitudes towards classism, elitism, and consumerism.

@Trinity M No influencer would be dumb enough to say how much they don’t like poor people and smugly brag about their riches. That person wouldn’t have a single follower and they’d be hated across all platforms. That’s why a lot of influencers make the people that follow them a part of some online “family“. You can definitely tell when you’re being flexed on, we can read between the lines. It’s typically noticeable when you see people buying things in excess that aren’t normal for average consumption. If someone with less money bought the same things it would be seen as a problem. Why isn’t it seen as a problem just because someone has more money? OK, if you have more money, you can buy one more than one car but you’re definitely flexing on us when you have 12. Flex culture isn’t just the state of having things it’s a state of having things that border on the ridiculous and absurd.

@Trinity M Simply seeing wealth is not the issue. I'm specifically referring to flex culture and influencer marketing. Influencer culture is just another side of the advertising industry, which is notorious for creating insecurities in people in order to manipulate them to buy things. I think it's sad that in modern times, it's no longer just corporations manipulating individuals, but now we're all participating and doing it to each other. Also, can we please stop turning "jealousy" into a dirty word, or evidence of a moral failing? Jealousy is a natural human emotion. It's what the advertising industry and influencer marketing industry relies on, and what makes it is so effective and powerful. The reason I'm tailoring my social media feeds away from influencer culture/flex culture is because I do not enjoy how it's literally designed to make me feel. I don't think there's anything wrong with removing things from your life that don't work for you.

i feel like alot of maintenance can be done at home (lashes, mani pedi, facials, hair masks, hair extensions) etc. investing in the products these professional places use & learning the techniques can save you A TON of money. and youtube is a great teacher

In her personal opinion, she believes a lot of maintenance for oneself should/can be done by yourself using professional products bc it can save you a ton of money and youtube is a great teacher. When If that was to happen those fields Won't make any money. This is the video that I needed heading into 2023. Coming back down to reality with an intention of abundance but also simply accepting where I’m at and knowing it’s only temporary. We will all go broke trying to keep up with the joneses. the great question to ask is do you even LIKE or desire these things for yourself or are you just being manipulated by social media to feel as though this is what you need to want and what you need to do.

I spent so much time comparing my life to what I saw on social media that it made me ungrateful for all that I do have and al that I have worked for. I love that you went in depth in discussing this! FACTS! Women need to stay off social media and fix their own lives instead of wasting time viewing other women’s content that make $100,000 or more a year when they could be investing time in themselves to eventually obtain that $100,000 a year too! Something else that could be helpful to consider is that depending on the individual (who spend hella $$$ on beauty maintenance), they may be able to claim all or a portion of these expenses on their taxes. E.g. since an influencers job is to influence, they could rightfully claim that they need a certain appearance to successfully do their job. So, they could very well ‘NEED’ the $5k maintenance for their holiday, because travel content or beauty content is a source of their income. It would almost be parallel to someone flexing on what they spend on their business every month.

i needed this video, last year more than now bc i’ve learned my lesson lol. i spent so much of last year feeling behind and distressed bc i didn’t have money to buy a new wigs, a full set of hybrid lashes and long decked out nails biweekly. but i had to be realistic and realize i was never going to be living that lifestyle as a normal 21 year old girl working a normal minimum wage job. so now i’m okay w doing what i can afford and learning to love saving up for fun things. i also started to learn to a lot of those maintenance services on myself so i don’t need to save hundreds of dollars and rely on someone else. 💕 and now i’m trying social media so that even if i can’t make 100k a year, i can get free wigs and products and services as tax write offs 💕💕💕

lots of girls who live these lifestyles get sponsorships and paid serivices. have rich boyfriends/husbands and partners, have multiple streams of income, high paying salaries (less likely), or just come from wealth. It’s always about the glamour but not how they got to where they are. We need to keep in mind that if we want a certain reality we need to do everything we can reasonably do to achieve it without overextending ourselves morally, physically, and mentally

Your fav insta model is probably busting it open for a rich man. there’s nothing wrong w that but if your apt to what goes on behind the scenes it wouldn’t be so shocking. there are literally whole video essays exposing this culture. Some of these girls just have rich partners that can afford to spoil them 🤷‍♀️

in my opinion all these “maintenance” services are so extra like i’d understand 200-500 max which is pushing it for nails, hair, and lashes combined. After a certain point the money can only do so much to improve your looks when you get the skincare and exercise down. like do you seriously need to spend 1.5k to look your best if it’s not some sort of cosmetic procedure like cool sculpting, waxing etc.

I love maintenance and shopping and I’m currently unemployed in the sense of a “job” but I’m a stay at home wife. I enjoy doing what I want when I want but nothing I do is a necessity. Combined me and my husband make 120k a year and I tried that $1500 maintenance a month thing and I had to FIND shit to spend that money on (and only spent $500 of it and put the extra $1000 in savings). There isn't anything in this world that warrants a 1.5k a month maintenance. I had got my nails done (long acrylic stiletto with a pedi) got waxed and got some damn braids and as I said earlier that shit was only $500. These people are selling dreams that don't even make sense tbh

i like you provided that contrast. Personally, I feel like maintenance is what you make it. If we do some of our own services or redefine what makes us feel beautiful, $1,500 on maintenance seems absurd. I am simple with maintenance, I get my eyebrows done about once a month for $8, I paint my own nails, my skin care is simple, and I invest in quality pieces (through thrifting) and hair products, and I do my own makeup (nothing crazy, just eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss, lip liner) and it’s possible to look good on a budget.

I’d just like to say thank you for this video. As a young adult who’s always been into social media and the beauty world starting 2013 and growing up with it, I’ve always wondered how I could be like them or how I would like to have the things they have and I’ve done some rather dumb things as a child to get those beauty products. But watching this video has made me realize that I don’t need everything that an influencer has and I should be mindful of the things I want; which I think takes a lot of strength. It is always easy to spend money without thinking but being mindful and telling yourself no is something I’m learning bit by bit.

I always feel if one person can achieve something I can do. Limit social media use and stop comparing yourself to others. I don't feel jealous because I make the most of what's within my mental and financial bracket. I create new outfits with the clothes I have. I watch hair style videos to try new looks with whatever hair I have. just live within your means and you’ll be fine. Please save as much money as possible especially when you’re making good money and try to be rational with your spending. I get that beauty treatments feel nice but what’s the point? if the exorbitant spending is to secure a partner then that’s not even someone you shld want and if it’s just to keep up appearances some inner self evaluation needs to be done. once the lashes fall out, hair gets old, and nails grow out will any of that have rlly improved you as a person physically or mentally in the long run.

Right now I’m working in retail and I’m in college trying to figure out my life but I am absolutely no where near making the money that I imagined myself to make because I’m still in my early years and so most of the time I’m broke 😂 and i sometimes have a deprivation mindset because I work for minimum wage but meanwhile there’s so many others that are making a thousand dollars or more a month. But I’ve been working on my mindset and this was just the encouragement I needed. There are ways that I can enjoy my life in my own way and in my own lane. And I definitely don’t have to prove myself to anyone and I just have to remember that. Sometimes I forget especially when I’m around my friends because my friends just make way more than me and it just makes me feel small sometimes. But I forgot we’re all going through the same things too, like we’re all in that developmental stage and trying to figure it out as we go. But I’m gonna just do things that make ME feel good and keep trying my best.🎉❤ thank you!

I have SINCE concluded THE SAME THING AND HAVE LIVED BY IT. I HAVE NEVER been intimidated or envious of people's lifestyle. I am a BIG fan of living it up within your OWN income bracket. Being too busy coveting what others have particularly the one percenters that you may never attain is a wasted life. Of course I'm not saying people can't and shouldn't attain progression. Only, learning how to manage living a full life that is of your means...if you can get top notch for YOUR income bracket and want to do so, DO IT...that's living. For example, I may not have multiple rooms used for closets full of haute couture but I have my dream spare room closet and multiple smaller closets filled with designer and vintage clothing and other styles I LIKE. I may not live in a mansion. But I live in a house that's big...big enough to accommodate everything we (my husband and I) needed and could want in a house...it's bigger than/an upgrade from our first house for sure. I live comfortably. I have a savings. I enjoy life of both the big and small things that my income can afford me to do. Now, I DO enjoy watching the closets and home tours of rich/wealthy people because I get ideas on how to do my own budget friendly version. Not to mention, it is admittedly fun and FASCINATING. Overall, we aren't working JUST to pay bills and put money away into a retirement account. We work to also enjoy life...enjoy the fruits of our labor...to be able to "play" after the work is done. That's about it.
