It's Saturday, it is comments day. Today is a lot more music and guitar based for those of you interested in that! One of you asked how I can sing "falsetto", but let me explain how I actually sing and why. I love getting all these comments from you, thank you!

@@phantomechelon3628 Supposing you didn't want the pigeons to work too hard, and to err on the side of caution you might order 2,000 pigeons to be safe. Surely you'd need some sort of lightweight string to connect the pigeons to the body, since 2,000 pigeons would struggle to all find a foothold at once. The string would have weight in and of itself, so the extra pigeons might be necessary to offset the logistics.

Hey Justin, my name is Matt Ramsey and I'm a vocal coach (as well as a true fan of yours). I just wanted to pop in and say that your description of your upper register is spot-on! As a singing teacher, I would call your approach at the top of your voice a "Head Voice Belt", rather than a falsetto. The distinction is one of strength resulting from closure of the vocal folds. The stronger the closure of the folds, the louder the sound. Falsetto comes from a weaker, breathier production with vocal folds closing less tightly. That is contrasted with your typical approach to those high notes: one of strength, power and twang. Keep up the great work. I watch all your videos!

Ditto this! Would love to hear your take on the process of your personal experience. Only what you’re comfortable sharing of course. In any artistic endeavor naturally you want it to connect with people, and successfully doing that must be amazing. Fame however, I would expect is an unwelcome pitfall. So many negatives with fame like paparazzi, tabloid news, being young and fans constantly giving you alcohol and substances to abuse. Sooo many women almost literally throwing themselves at you, I expect also men and non binary folks too, LGBTQ, equal opportunity people throwing themselves at you (‘sacred promise of fellatio’ one of my favorite lines of many in Shitting Out Solid Gold!). It seems like a dangerous rabbit hole that can make it hard to be faithful to the person you love, can distance you from your kids, etc. I would love to be successful, but I’m quite sure I would hate fame. Now I’ve got David Bowie’s song stuck in my head.

Hi Justin, we do a cover of “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” and people LOVE IT when we play it! The falsetto thing is right: I, for example, only use some kind of falsetto when singing certain lines (the first two occurrences of “god, you're touching me”, also “just listen to the rhythm of my heart” and “we'll be rocking till the sun goes down”) to make them a bit softer, but for the rest of the song, even the higher screams like the one at the end, is just head voice. You, and especially that song, made me really up my register game. You're a beast, man. Cheers and Metal! 🤘😎

I totally agree with you on the feeling about standing in front of a loud amp, Justin. There's just something about it.......the soundwaves just sort of pulsating and the air that an amp is pushing. Especially when hitting the strings. There's almost something kind of child-like about it, like when we are very young and realizing that we have some sort of effect on the world. Lead playing is especially like this.....it's like communicating a different language, but louder, and it's interesting how it just becomes more exciting the louder that it gets.

You have a fantastic range Justin and I am envious of it and of your fearlessness to stand on a stage and show it off. It's an amazing thing. Any thoughts on Axl Rose's vocal range? It is said that he has a vocal range of six octaves, from F1 heard in “In There Was a Time“, to B flat 6 while singing “Ain't it Fun“, which is five octaves above it. I thought it was madness but under the right conditions with the right frame of mind arrived at through the right combination of snack choices, you can hear the individual tracks of a song and if you focus your mind in the right way you can hear the backing tracks on some of the songs where he was doing them and the low notes are unbelievably low. The highs we've all heard of course but some of the notes he sings are so low they almost feel like a drone. It's wild. Does anyone have a wider range? Is that a legit measurement? I don't know.
@RickReasonnz
@RickReasonnz 2 года назад
Corey Taylor has 5 and a half octaves, and Mike Patton can do 6. Think Mariah Carey's around there too. But I've always found those kind of measurement incredibly nebulous and, tbh, bullshit. All about what determine a hit note; is it once heard, is it sustainable, etc, etc. Really don't like Axl's high end; prefer hearing him in Patience than I do in songs like You Could Be Mine. For me, one of those bands where I prefer to music to the vocals, like (hot take) The Police.

I LOVE YOUR HAIR! As a fellow long haired man, I enjoy the company of other men with long hair. But honestly do whatever makes you feel happy. I think the long hair is cool, you will never be too old for long hair, but yeah if you need to change it up, that's fully up to ya.

That was great to hear the guitar info. I loved hearing the tech stuff about the amps - and also that you gave your un biased opinion on a mix of amps rather than just one. I think the mixture and difference between what you and Dan play sounds amazing. I’m still addicted to sound of Jussy’s girl! What an amazing track. It would be awesome to hear your breakdown of your tracks or what inspired you . Thank you mr Hawkins!

Best explanation of why valve amps can’t be matched by modellers, cheers! Not just for big gigs or recording either, at home too(with attenuator) , guitars come alive when they are just on the verge of feedback.

The song "Just" by Radiohead uses a chord for all 12 notes. I believe it was a challenge between Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood to see who could write the song with the most chords. Like you said, there's no limit as long as the melody justifies it.

The pigeons calculation made me smile :-). It is a bit pointless though: I don't think pigeons will want to carry a human associated with a hawk.

you sound like you use your chest and head voice. which more rock singers need to keep doing. u have an amazing voice! freddie had a similar situation also plant. i totally agree it's definitely not a true falsetto.

@@Mitch93 I like Roger's singing, too -- his notes in Bohemian Rhapsody are crazy. "I'm in Love with my Car" is one of my favorite Queen songs. But if I just heard the "Justin Hawkins rides again... again" without seeing Justin singing it, I would swear that was Freddie Mercury.
