I tried this recipe last night, and it blew me away. The look, texture, and taste were all spot on. With every bite, my taste buds were waiting for a hint of banana but nothing. I added the extra liquid before first mixing, but it was too wet, so I added more breadcrumbs Which made me yield 18 meatballs instead of the 12-13 you suggested. I will definitely try the pull pork recipe next. I can't figure out how to post a photo can anyone help?
That's so nice to read your message, really warmed my heart... I love your additional twist to the recipe, I love when people add their own signature to the original dishes! It is not allowed to post photos on the comments section on RU-vid, however, you can tag me on Facebook or Instagram, if you do that I'll share it myself as well if you like me to. My pages on social media are listed on the description box below the video. Have a fab day my darling! Much love!❤️🥰
Thank you so much for trying it out and sharing about it. Exactly what I was hoping for. My concern wasnt that it was going to be sweet. I thought it might be bitter.
@@prossynannyanzi7072 Well, if you think about it, putting the peels into the compost pile isn't really a waste, because the peels will help your garden
Years ago, I made the mistake of freezing bananas without peeling them first. It was not fun, trying to peel them later. But you live and learn. I never knew you could use the peels, althought I used to blend them with water and feed to my rose bush. If you buy rose food, it smells very strongly of bananas. They are good for discouraging insects from eating the rose bushes. We were never taught in school about the way that Mother Nature provides for us. What a rip off it was, thinking we were learning everyhting important that we needed to know. Better late than never, we now have you tube and wonder tutors like you and Steve the bread man, (that's what I call him) and God bless all of our wonderful cooks and bakers and gardeners who share their knowledge and experience with us.
I so agree with you. The hours the children spend at school, they could learn so many more things that would be useful; instead of alot of things I consider not useful at all.

If you freeze them with the peel just wait for them to defrost and the banana will come out like a yogourt tube when pressing on it!
Sounded bananas to me, but I tried it and it's good! I pre- fried the onion, mushroom and peels prior to forming the meatballs with Italian seasoning. This is a must - try recipe.
Ha! Sounded bananas but didn't taste as such... 😜 Let me know if you make them as you can read in the comments below, people really dig it. Have a fab weekend, Nina! 😘
Hi.. I was thinking I would cook the onions with the peels along with the spices then form the balls since am using the very green peels. I will do just that.
I would like to see more of the peeling and scraping of the banana peel and the exact color of banana peel. You glossed over the most important step. This is a new concept, cooking banana peels and we need to see it in detail.
Jana, I just finished making this, and let me tell you, it is AMAZING! I thought it was going to be an epic fail, but the meatballs came out SO delicious (I even made the tomato sauce according to your other recipe!). Thank you so much for putting this out there.
I just tried this recipe and WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS? I didn’t have tomatoes so I just fried them instead and added parsley into the mixture. Since I went vegan I was searching for a meatball recipe but they would always turn into a mush but this crisped up so well and the taste of them was amazing. I only fried one of the meatballs to try how they tasted there’s a bunch of them in the fridge for the next day I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE DINNER!!! Thank you so much Jana and thanks youtube for recommending you to me
Hello there! That's such a nice comment thank you so much! This brightened my day! These meatballs are actually one of my favorite recipes, it's so easy, isn't it... :) Much love and have a fab day :)
Wow, what an awesome recipe, i never thought you could use banana peel to make Meatless Meatballs. Your sauce & Meatballs, look amazing & so delicious. Can't wait to try this recipe out myself. Thanks for sharing. Paulo & Kath GB. 👍❤👩🍳🙏🎵😋
@@eswaribalan164 how did you do that? I have a neighbor offering me his leftovers from juicing for my potted plants but I am not allowed to compost at my apartment.
Tessa LynneYou can lookup at - How to make compost in plastic bottles at home #stayathome -Cosas del Jardín. It works well does not smell and you have it done in 30 days. Blessings
Thank you! This could save me a load of time and money in these difficult times, and banana skin is something I've been throwing away of under rose bushes up until today! :)
I noticed you demonstrated the too ripe one. Do you lay the perfect one down and shave off the thinnest of layers of only the outside yellow or do you use that, too?
*CHEF* ☺ 🤩😍😘 l am stoopkid (a stupid kid) because l was honoured to receive a reply direct from the Master and failed to say _thank you_ for taking time to reply to l'il ol' me. *THANK YOU SO MUCH* 😘😍🤩
They look fantastic. I am not a vegan but that is a phenominal idea for banana skins, we eat a lot of bananas in our house and this is a great new use for them.
Hi Jana, I tried the recipe ... had to substitute milled chia seeds for flax seeds, and ginger for nutmeg ... and it was awesome!! My only advise is that the dish is best served hot rather than warm (tried it both ways when I went back for seconds!), but ultimately I would say a huge success ... looking forward to more of your recipes! I literally followed it step by step ... didn’t prefry anything ... served at a dinner party & went down a treat! I also added 4 balls to the air fryer just to see what they were like out of the sauce ... they got crispy, but did not taste as good as those added to the sauce initially ... my daughter thought they tasted like onion bhaiji 😅 It’s great to see recipes that I can actually make tasty vegan options from what I have at home 💕 Keep up the good work!!
Wow that’s such great news! ✌️😊❤️I’m super happy you’ve liked them, it’s actually one of my favorites both to make and to eat. Much love you you both and thank you for following my work, means a lot to me! ❤️😘
A good mixture to use to clean the banana of pesticides is a solution of water, a bit of vinegar and salt. Soak the *whole, uncut fruit* in the solution for 5-10 minutes and rinse well. Then, you will have peels safe for consumption whether they’re organic or not :) If you need more info about this technique, Dr Michael Mcgregor is on RU-vid and has covered this topic.
Thank you for this recipe. I was very skeptical when I tried it, but in a land where bananas are plentiful (and unfortunately, nothing else especially during these Covid times) I figured I had nothing to loose. Well, I felt like I hit the jackpot! It taste wonderful!
I have tried a few varieties now, and I would like to add some ideas here: If you bake it or fry it as burger patties instead of cooking them, it is a good idea to add a half tsp baking powder. If you are gluten-sensitive leftover rice works well instead of flour. If you don't insist on a vegan solution:, eggs are fantastic binding agents. Actually, banana is already a very good binding agent. You can add either a banana or 2 eggs instead of the flaxseed. I have tried it also with potato flour, and that also works; it adds a bit of hashbrown energy to it. I also like some basil added. I really like the shallow fried version, this recipe is the best vegan burger I have ever had.
Thank you, Jana, dear. I try to make your recipe and I've got my own one at the time I worked on it. Here are my changings. 2 -3 banana peels chopped or blended a little The same quantity of rice, yesterday coocked (brown or half round rice - your preference) 1 small shredded carrot 1 TBSP of flax seeds pouder 1 TBSP of matzos flour 1-2 garlic cloves Turmeric pouder, oiled maroccan paprika, black peper, kumin, cillantro, ginger pouder Himalaya salt Making a meatballs and refrigerating as you recommended. For the sauce: 1chopped onion 1 chopped carrot Grapeseeds oil 1 tomato and some catchup Himalaya salt Water as need The seasoning is jist the same as for the meatballs I also add smoked paprika and small qantity of sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce. Cooking is regulary - heat oil, add onion, than add carrot, than tomato, than water. All the seasoning can be added in time of onion/carrot cooking, before adding water. Cooking a soace takes like half an hour or the time your meatballs are sitting in the refrigerator. Than more 20 minutes of coocking the meatballs in a gravy. To make a gravy more thick you may add 1TSP of tapioka with water , with tearspoon carefully around the meatballs. Done! With love from Haifa, Israel😀
That would not work for me.. my family knows i don't eat meat so they would immediately know it was something else and would most likely demand to know what it is before eating it lol
I made both the bolognese and the banana peel meatballs, SO GOOD! The texture of the meatballs did come out a little gummy, but I think this may be because I used panko instead of the regular breadcrumbs. Despite that one fault (which was my own), I loved it. Great taste, and not a single hint of banana. Thank you Chef Jana for such a great recipe and your adorable videos!
Great idea to make meatballs from the banana peel. I learned to make shredded meat aka "carne mechada" from plantain peels when I lived in South America for a while. It was delicious over rice. You should try this!
That's right, it is very common here in Brazil, we call it carne louca, I have never tasted it though but its a good idea for a future video perhaps, what you think?😃😍
My experience was the Venezuelan style, but I'm sure any would be delicious. I say go for it! The plantains were green and the plantain part was made into "tostones". It is a very filling meal.
@@ChefJana i would love to see a video on this! :) Tried it in South America and the taste was so good, i would be happy if i learn how to prepare iit myself.
I made this last night for my sister and those meatballs are out of this world! so much flavor and better than any meat alternative I've tried. Thank you, Chef Jana for sharing:)
Chef Jana!! You are the most creative, resourceful and gorgeous chef!!! This is exactly what the world needs more of...creative sustainable vegan recipes! Thank you so much! Keep up the planet, human, animal saving food!
Chef Jana I made the meatballs and they were absolutely DELICIOUS. Thank you for the recipe. I’ve been cooking since I was 9 years old and have been given the nickname of “Magic Hands” 😊 It’s because of people like you who come up with new ideas for recipes that not only taste scrumptious but allows us to widen our range and knowledge of cooking and learn how to use produce in ways we might not otherwise have thought of 😋🤗❤️
Thank you for uploading this video. My grandmother taught me how to make banana meatless food including green banana porridge that is still my favourite breakfast meal now i have it with honey.
Here are the nutrition facts on the banana peels. Couldn't find anything in English but this page is very explanatory and complete: www.tuasaude.com/informacao-nutricional-da-casca-de-banana/
tried this last night. it was good. i fried the balls in oil (before i addded them to the sauce) for a good while. i also added honey and crush red peppers close to the end of cooking the balls. My mother doesnt like fake meat but she was impressed. We have some left over and will be eating this again tonight.
Thank you for sharing this yummy recipe dear Chef Jana, ah....it totally makes sense now, when years ago my Dad told us that our Grandpa's gardener ate his bananas whole and we were like why would you do that?!! But years later there was a dried, blackened banana peel on the ground next to our garden, and my pet rabbit, sniffing every inch of the garden came across the banana peel and happily started munchin' on it, I was frightened and quickly took the banana peel away from her, but she only inquisitively searched for the peel, so if gardeners and rabbits love the banana peel and now you share this yummy recipe, well, trying this recipe soon! Greetings from Querétaro, Mexico! :)
And this is an undeniable proof that our grandparents knew better, right?... and rabbits. Rabbits are also very clever ;) Thank you for your much nice comment, it is nice that you've liked the recipe and can also relate to it in a way... Much love to you! And I love Mexico! Can't wait to come back! :)
"I don't know why people they don't want you to use your hand in the kitchen" because they say the is the most dirty... Picture it you go to bathroom we all know what do we do there... And we know sometimes we get into accidents like u didn't take enough toilet paper.... And some people they don't wash their hands properly and when u are cooking away you're sweating I know some people are going to say sweat it doesn't matter u can sweat without realizing it like under arm u don't realize it until u get home. Hand are like that... And how many times u c ppl finished to use a bathroom and just walk away? Or just simply go to the washing area and turn the water on one second later they're done. Because of all those reasons that's ppl get disgusted especially if u are touching the food they are going to eat... I myself I dread going out to eat for three reasons the cost, the food I'm about to eat how many ppl have touched? And would it be worth it?
@@prossynannyanzi7072 yew that's when you eat out. You never know what people are doing. I for one wash my hands b4 I cook or b4 I do anything at all in the kitchen. If I go to the restroom I wash my hands there then was my hands in the kitchen b4 cooking. So I don't see the issue with using my hands. Especially if I'm cooking my own food. Breadmakers have to use their hands too kneed. Sushi is made with your hands. People only get freaked out when its a messy food you are using you hands for.
I've tried it for the first time and it's the most awesome vegan recipe. The texture of the patties and the taste are amazing even though for the lack of tomato sauce i fried them, I also used just one banana peel and like half-eyeballed the spices. I loved the colour they turned after frying and, like you said, working with seitan can be so tricky but this was soooo easy. Thank you Jana for sharing this amazing recipe!
Happy New Year, Chef Jana. May I ask you for a bit more detail about preparing the banana skins ... and ... are there any extra steps required for commercial, non-organic bananas from my local grocery store? Thank you for inspiring me to want to try these!
I'm not vegan but YT recommended your channel and I'm really enjoying your recipes. This one I'm going to definitely try and who knows. It looks fabulous. Love the relaxed, homey feel of your videos. Keep up the great work! I look forward to trying this and more of your recipes.
Oh, Erin, that is the nicest comment ever! I am so happy you like the videos and recipes, its really encouraging to see you can accommodate my vegan recipes into your food wardrobe, that's exactly why I make those videos for! Much love to you my darling and have a fab weekend!
Hi, Chef Jana ... I keep forgetting to order paprika, but have turmeric on hand. I use it a lot, on chicken thighs when I fry them in the electric fryer, and I just finished peeling and scraping six banana peels. I put the bananas in the freezer for later use and the peels are in a plastic food saver bag. They are going to become "meatballs" as soon as I finish my homemade soup that I have left over from yesterday. I love your recipes, even though I'm not vegan, because it is a good way to lose weight and save money by not using ground meat for meatballs or burgers. I may become a vegan yet, but not sure, as I still like to use eggs. Please don't judge me...You are my new BFF.
Oh and i throw away such lovely peel just yesterday. Would hv love to recycle them into bannana balls. And with the rush for food at the supermarket. We need all the recycling of food recipes we can get at this time with the covid-19 hitting the world at this time. Thanks will try it for sure.
When i was growing up, we’d dry the (green/unripe) peels and then grind them into a powder and use as flour. Some others would slice them into strips snd make a porridge. I moved to the USA and realised i can never consume banana peels here. No Ma’am. Can’t trust anything here. But this is a fantastic video. Well done.
Yes it is a shame here in the US. We can't even trust the food if it claims to be organic. The FDA is paid off by the food industry. Just one more way the US has changed.
I’m Brazilian too and I remember a couple of decades ago hearing about a successful experiment they did in Brazil to end malnutrition in a very poor area, using banana peel flour. I usually scrape the peel and add it to my smoothies.
Great recipe idea. I have never used banana peel for making meatless recipes. The meatless meatballs look very delicious and with a good bite 😋 Thank you for sharing 👍
This is one of the best recipes ever and works like a charm. So surprising! Make sure you add the extra water it needs the moisture and it's always better to cook in a sauce versus alone.
You've earned a subscriber for this recipe. I'm ALL about reducing food waste, and this is right up my alley. Can't wait to see more of your creative ideas.
Squeeze a little orange or lemon juice over them and put them in a covered container on the counter top, to ripen. Then use as you'd normally use a ripened banana.
Boil your banana peel skin in bicarbonate of soda and water first it changes the texture like mushroom. You can use in savory recipes and sweet recipes and caraway is excellent with peels
Jana, in the video you show the scraping of the inside of the banana peel, so are you supposed to scrap the inside of the banana peel first as part of the preparation of the banana peel, then chop them or was that just a demonstration to show how thick you want the inside of the banana peel to be. I've always thought about the banana peel but never knew if you could do anything with it. I really want to try this.
You must scrape off the inside, since it'll have the taste of the banana, if I'm not wrong. Try watching her other recipe video on banana peel pulled pork - that ought to give you some insights!
I have a question.......if you use a ripen peel can you use a hotter spice and or acid to balance the sweet? I want to try this because I don't like waste. There is so many things in nature that can nurture us.
Vicky, you can still use the greener bananas in smoothies, or just as you normally would, or in cakes and all... But if you only like ripe bananas, you can still make it but scrape the peel some more, it will be thinner so you'll need more peels. and if you make the banana peel pulled no pork that I've shown here, even better, because the bbq sauce compliments the occasional sweetness from the ripe peel. the link for the vid is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oYPXkrWy7iY.html Let me know what you made and the results! 🥰
I am very excited to try this. Living in the D.R. and being vegan gluten free there is nothing I can buy to replace meat here I have to find ways to create it. I have banana trees what a savings to make meat with this. I am soy and gluten free which also narrows the field. So I am ready to try banana peel meatballs and your pulled "no Pork" ha ha.. I love this idea!! Thanks! I will be letting you know how it came out for me!
I know right?... bananas are a staple on every vegan household, now you can enjoy the peels as well, yaaayyy!!! Yes, please let me know how they turn out for you, I'm curious to know your thoughts on it! :)
I have just made this for the first time. A lot of work. I thought 1 tsp of salt was a lot and i didn't want to ruin it so I only used 1/2 tsp. The meatballs were easy to shape and held up very nice when cooking them I the sauce. I cooked them for around 40 minutes (altitude is about 8000 feet here). Turned them over after 15 minutes. Seemed to have puffed up when ready. They had just a slight 'gluey' texture. I only used 1/2 cup bread crumbs as she mentions in the video and not 1 cup as in the instructions. I'm not sure which was correct. The meatballs tasted bland for me but the sauce was really good. I had a bit of a tummy ache afterwards. I only had 3 meatballs. Debating if I should have more tomorrow. Thank you for this recipe. It was a fun experience. I would have like if you measured the amount of chopped peel.
I once saw a breaded and fried 'chicken' cutlet recipe made with grapefruit peels. I never tried them - I hear they are a tad bitter, but someone suggested first putting rock salt on the peels to draw out the bitterness (just like my mamma used to do with eggplants).
I loved the idea. I just think that you should move a few things away from your kitchen, because they are blocking us from seeing what you are doing. Adorei a receita...vou fazer. Já tenho todos os ingredientes. Obrigada. Thank you!
Wow 😲 wonderful, it's good to know that we can consume the skins of the banana 🍌 and other's. I never throw away the banana skin, I cook it already but not as how you did it, I didn't scrap the skin as you did, I used to cut it very fine putting all the seasoning etcétera. But I used the half ripe bananas skin not the green one, but I am going to try it with the green skin. I’m not sure about using the banana peel for this, would the mushroom meat you make work with this recipe instead of the banana peel? Thank you I came across your channel and your recipes looks awesome can’t wait to watch more.
@TheJR1948 she meant mushroom body or mushroom fiber but didn't know how to call it...but i agree, we shouldn't use the word meat at all when talkign about plants!
@@Osiwan960 Idk about other countries but in Germany we say 'Fruchtfleisch' ('fruit meat') all of the time and it's the correct term to describe the inner part of a fruit it's completely normal 🤷🏻♀️
@@kj285 i know, it makes sense and it's "normal" for some people but sometimes we have to change our view of "normal". like, 100 years ago, many horrible behaviors were considered "normal" but today they are completely unacceptable. for me i just can't stand the word meat in any situation...it reminds me too much of animals and the terrible way they are treated. everyday i question the "norm" and a lot of it makes no sense to me. like cars, trucks, airplanes, rockets,etc..., they are "normal" for most people but for me they are the evil destruction of our planet and we might go extinct because of them. =)

That just sounds so self righteous. We all know what we are talking about when someone says "meatballs "; say "faux meatballs " or vegetarian meatballs if want, the other sounds too much like you're trying to make a point and forcing the issue.
I love this! I’m going to try this tomorrow. I made this - I had a bit of trouble with the right temp in the sauce when cooking the balls. They got mushy. I decided to bake the balls that I hadn’t cooked and they were great! So I’ll do that next time I use this recipe. They’re cooling on my counter now before freezing and it’s so tempting to snack on them!
