Our new Alliance 5th wheel has a height of 13’5” and we are very cautious of that fact. Unfortunately we had disaster strike when we destroyed our bedroom AC on an unmarked awning that appeared to be high enough but ended up being too short on one end.

I'm so sorry this happened! Keep your chin up, accidents happen. So glad that your new rig wasn't damaged any worse than it was. If mean people don't have anything better to do than tear down other people, they aren't worth getting upset about.

I applaud you for making this video to help the rest of us. I am right there with you my friend. I cannot get on top of my 5th wheel either due to my fear of heights. We usually go camping with our neighbors, and I always try to get a spot with no trees overhead. If there are trees, I need to ask my buddy to get on top of our 5th wheel to sweep off the tops of the slides and the roof before leaving. I helped him learn about towing and backing with an RV trailer, so it goes both ways. The way we react to these types of mishaps shows our true character, and you did very well. Thank you for sharing.

Absolutely it was not your fault they should’ve had it posted on the clearance of the gas station that way you would’ve known not to pull underneath of it. So sorry for this happening to your beautiful new fifth wheel! I am looking at the same one currently! Well maybe you can upgrade to a new quiet air conditioner option now. Well it’s one of the bright sides of this happening. Enjoy watching your channel !

Glad to hear everyone is ok - material things can be fixed or replaced but people can’t. Sorry about your mishap.

Patrick, other people have no idea all the things that you need to think about, until you pull an RV. Thanks for taking time to video this because it will be helpful to so many. While we were traveling a couple of years ago across country, we had been on the road awhile and I needed gas. I pulled into a station and someone in a small SUV, had pulled directly into the gas pumps. I was looking at the side of the SUV and there was no one in the car. I thought "what are they doing?" As I sat there waiting for them to come out, I glanced up at the overhang (it was an old station). I noticed the height was 12'3". We are 13'1". If they hadn't been there sitting, I would have pulled under and done the same thing. It would have been us too. We are much more cautious now. Duane

Hopefully you'll get to a point where you just shrug and laugh it off. You can't take it back, and another lesson learned! It's good to know that the roof structure wasn't damaged. If it makes you feel better: My dad, uncle and grandfather - all experienced RV'ers - have all forgotten to secure the hitch after hitching up to their fifth wheels. When they drove away, well ... let's just say a fifth wheel dropping onto the bed of the truck isn't quiet. Nor cheap! Best wishes and get home safe.

Oops! Well we all make mistakes. 13.5' is the maximum height without a special permit I believe. Most 5th wheel people try to fuel at Truck stops because they always accommodate that height but regular gas stations, not so much. Thanks for sharing your misfortune so that we can all learn from it. 5th wheels are great but size matters. Most Travel Trailers are 10 to 11 feet. We all need to think more like a semi driver when we pull these rigs down the road. Some tunnels have two heights, the middle and the side with the side being lowest. That gets even more complicated and underpasses are frequently under 13.5 feet. RV GPS's help but you can't depend on them. It is too easy to miss seeing a low clearance sign even when they have one. Hopefully there was no damage to the RV roof structure.

Sorry this happened but thank you so much for posting! We are new to RVing and this is a big help reminder to us to use a passenger to check if there is no sign. We looked and saw there were really no laws about posting signs. Some states have requirements for the heights. So variable which does not help. So my passenger has a new job so thank you for posting this!!!!

It would be nice to see heights posted everywhere.. I've gone through too many gas stations without them... Pucker factor on high. Good luck guys!

So sorry this happened to you. This is always a fear of mine. We have been to places that are unmarked and even incorrect height signs. Good idea to have spotter when unsure of height. So glad your friends were there to help you through this. Thank you for sharing.

I'm not even sure I could have recorded myself after that. I would have been so upset with myself and or with the station. Kudos to you for having the self-discipline to make a recording under such circumstances.

It wasn’t easy to record when it first happened but felt I needed some footage just for insurance purposes in case we wanted to file a claim. Hopefully this will help someone else from having this happen to them.

My heart goes out to you. This too will pass. As a former fifth wheel owner for many years -- I will say we never used any drive under gas pump designed for cars, and avoided these older/smaller stations as a rule ... and we always used truck stops which are designed for larger rigs, and have diesel pumps that are much faster. I feel most 5th wheels belong with the trucks/semis who know there are more reasons that just clearance to use truck stops, but also for turning around and parking safely. I hope you take this in a positive way, and as with most things in life -- you learn from your mistakes and get better. Safe travels!

Unfortunately our truck is gas so we have to use the auto lanes but I am very cautious where we go. Now I will be even more cautious

Ugh, very sorry to see this. We just barely avoided the same situation with our new Alliance Avenue on the way home from the rally pulling into a NY thruway rest stop. Seeing this gave me that sick feeling in my stomach all over again.

I feel your pain and frustration in your voice Pat. It sucks it happened to you. I’d seriously lawyer up and get the gas station to pay for your damages. You know it’s going to happen again with other RVers if no one steps up. One of my fears of owning a gas truck while pulling an RV. With diesel trucks going through a truck stops is a breeze without having to worry or wait for 2 pumps to free up, low clearances and cars coming and going from all sides and angles. It just added stress instead of enjoyment to trip. That gas station is lacking safety signs, and they should be held accountable 100%!

Thanks Mo! A diesel would definitely be easier for fueling.

So sorry to hear. It can happen to anybody. I blew my wifes back truck window out pulling a stump out. All you can do is learn for next time. Have that spotter. As for me, no more stump pulling. Thanks for all your info on TABS also! We just got one!

So sorry this happened to you! Since there was no sign posted, they should be paying for your damages. Since your rig is so tall, I think I’d be going to truck stops to be safe. Whenever a parking lot is resurfaced, the chances of the height being less than posted also goes up, so I’d just play it safe and use a truck stop. Safe travels home!

I had a similar incident with my Thule on top of my car in a parking garage. I drove in under the yellow bar, but once I got into the garage my Thule was ripped open. I understand that horrible feeling you got in your stomach.
