Great video Roger, I have a halo at my house and love it, but my water isn’t quite at the level of needing a softener. Just sold one of these north stars, excited to see how my client likes it.

Roger I watch many of you’re videos I love that you are a man of integrity and believe in quality work and quality products I am not a plumber but I love watching you’re videos I am a licensed water well technician and I also have my master water conditioning license It’s cool seeing you do a video on something more in my line of work it’s just really surprising to see you talk up north star equipment they are basically a thing of the past out on the east coast the cabinet unit you show is just a copy of a Home Depot econo line whirlpool softener that’s rebranded definitely not my idea of a high quality unit you might want to look into a fleck 2510 or clack style unit much better quality and much easier to work on I myself sell 7300 clack valves from aqua treatment services in my opinion they are one of the best quality and most user friendly systems on the market it’s all about giving the customer the best equipment and most user friendly experience please don’t take this as me downing you like I said I love you’re videos you do a great job just from one tradesman to another trying to give you a edge on a better product on the market

Replaced my water softener about half a year ago. The old one was leaking and corroding at the bottom. Couldn’t figure out why the new one was leaking. Spent 3 days trying to figure out how to stop it. That was the time I learned that there was a wrong way to put on plumbers tape.

These things make some tasty H20! We use the salt Dura Cube Red Out or something of a similar name.. that's my Dads EXCLUSIVE brand he feeds our softener.. Cool video, thanks, now I understand what happens when I lose pressure during my shower as this device does its regeneration.

I work for Reliance Home Comfort in Ontario and I install, maintenance and repair softeners, iron filters and chlorine filters. The worst part is when you have to take one out and the brine tank is completely full of salt lol. That is a job that is going to hurt

Is a RPZ valve required when installing any type of softener or filtration systems?
@Mike_Seymour
@Mike_Seymour 3 года назад
Roger you forgot the benefit of the softener with carbon, it also removes chlorine from the water. All these units are great softeners. If having salt in your water is a concern all these units can run on potassium chloride. Potassium is way more expensive than salt but the northstar softeners use less to regenerate than other units. Only downside is precipitation. Potassium has a nasty habit of mushing at the bottom of the salt tank. It is worse in areas with wide temperature swings during the day. If they still want to use potassium, just add 1 bag at a time and check the float assembly frequently for crystal buildup.

A good softener almost makes the water feel like oil, it's really bazaar and definitely a luxury but it does take a shower to the next level..
@Rider.WhiteHorse
@Rider.WhiteHorse 6 месяцев назад
That oily feeling is when the softener is actually set to high and over softening the water. Properly set softeners do not have an oily feeling.

Im sure this system does a great job at softening and filtering the water, but I still prefer Fleck due to the heads being stainless steel instead of plastic. Just makes me more confident as the installer. Plumb on brother

Roger doesn't know how water softeners work. The resin has a positive charge, the minerals have a negative. The resin acts like a magnet and the minerals stick to the resin. The salt is used to clean the resin. The salt has a ++positive change which causes the minerals to jump off the resin and gets flushed out of the system. There's no actual salt in the water when the filter is being used normally. That slimy feeling is coming from your skin's natural oil, not from the water. The minerals and chemicals in the water is what dries out your skin. You need to install a carbon filter before the softener because the chlorine will kill the resin over time

Oily feeling is actually more so when a softener is set too high and over softening the water.

Tips for treating high iron in well water?
@Rider.WhiteHorse
@Rider.WhiteHorse 6 месяцев назад
You need to first test the water, find out what level of iron you have and what type of iron is present. After the test will determine the equipment needed. Iron filters are the obvious solution to high iron.

I watched your video last night and it made me decide to buy a North Star unit today. Biggest mistake of my life. I bought it the local plumbing supply company, brought it home and unboxed it. The BIGGEST POS I've ever seen. A milk jug is heavier plastic than the resin tank stand is made. The tank won't even stand up in it. You can see thru the resin tank. The cheapest big lots garbage can is twice as thick and heavy as the brine tank. The transformer was dangling by the cord half way down the resin tank. Total freakin garbage. It's going back tomorrow. JUNK !!!! avoid this company and your lying BS at all cost !!!

Hey Roger, I’ve been a fan for a while and watch all your videos. I’m a plumber in Arizona and we have very hard water here so I work on and install many softeners. I gotta say one thing I disagree with what you said about a tank or tankless water heater. From my experience softeners are great for tankless, but I’ve seen time and time again tanks leaking sooner than normal when there is a water softener. I tell customers all the time that softeners will actually shorten the life span of a tank water heater.

Is this a how to or a Ferguson sales pitch? Sounds like the typical sales guy that’s devoid of technical info. How about showing how to do a hardness test? (Get a Hach kit). How to size appropriately based on actual hardness (not just water usage). Disappointed Roger. Your sponsorships are leading you astray

@jessicacordova5024

It goes inline before your water heater before a split in cold and hot water lines.
@joejr9653
@joejr9653 3 года назад
No just the cold line. It's cold water into it which brings cold water out of it. The install he showed would be done by where your water comes into your house that way you soften all of your water. Installed in such a way as to skip your irrigation feed if you have one as he stated.
@taniksambo1969
@taniksambo1969 3 года назад
So before the cold line that split into the hot line? I'll look for more installation video I guess.
@joejr9653
@joejr9653 3 года назад
@@taniksambo1969 cold water line comes into the house, then into water meter (if you have public water and meter is in house), then water goes into this unit, then the cold water line feeds the rest of the house. Your hot line comes from water heater. The cold line does not "split" into the hot water line. All water will be soften this way both the cold and hot water lines. If you have irrigation line you would tee off the cold water before entering this unit for that. It is relatively an easy install. Hardest part would be running the drain line from the unit if you don't have a sewer line close by.
