I think channels like yours are needed for the younger generation coming into the trades. Its so easy to meet abunch of hacks going through your apprenticeship and getting the wrong attitude about their trade. I think it’s important to make it something you care about because your job is important.

Hey Roger, you should talk about returnless circulation pumps with mixing valves next! Grundfos makes those too. The mixing valve bridges the hot and cold water lines at the furthest sink in the circuit, and the hot water is pushed into the cold water side when the hot side cools below minimum temp. No return pipe needed, and it also runs off a timer. The downside is a cold water line at that faucet that isn't as cold as it normally would be, but who really cares when the shower and sink have instant got water? Installing the bridge mixing valve at the furthest point possible in the circuit means every hot water tap between the heater and the valve also gets immediate hot water, or at least a much much shorter wait time. Many people don't like the need for ripping out drywall to run a recirc line for a traditional setup and the bridge valve design is exactly what they're looking for.

Did you know that you can turn the pump face in whatever direction you want on a Grunfoss pump? by loosening the 4 bolts on the pump and turning it. That way the pump face is easier to readout.

@larrylupe

So how long does it take for this pump to charge the whole recirc line with hot water? Is there a max length you can use on the recirc line? Would using 1" allow it charge faster? I was reading that with pex you can only do 2.2gpm on 3/4" and 3.6gpm on 1" as to not go over the max 2ft/sec rule but how do you know what pump to get to not overdue it while still getting the water to fill the recirc line as fast as possible. I was going to make my dedicated recirc line 60' but then I came up with the idea to run the recirc down to each fixture so the hot water would get there even faster but that will increase my recirc line to over 100' and the time it takes the hot water to the furthest fixture. Any advice?

Hi Roger - Love your show and I learn so much from it. I have a Laing installed - same thing, different manufacturer - and we have indeed save tens of thousands of gallons using this. I was concerned that the recirc would hurt my anode but after pulling the replacement I put in, there was very little wear at all. I put in a new anode (segmented) at that time since it was available, but at least in my case, the recirc doesn't seem to cause any issues where I live. We use Tennessee river water and our water quality where we live is really, really good.

If you have a tank water heater in the crawlspace, and you run the recirculation line right, you can use convection to circulate the water without the need of a pump.

Brrayday, can you explain this more?
@brrrayday
@brrrayday 3 года назад
@@rockandmeatroll I'm on a phone so I can't type much, but essentially you insulate the hot water lines and run the return low, uninsured do that it cools, and tie that into the bottom of the water heater at the drain. The water falls down into the bottom of the tank, and the hot water pushes up and siphons back around by convection. Its tricky to build, but that's the principle *building codes may be an issue

Definitely easy to do with a dedicated return line. Not for systems with the thermostatic valve at a point of use though. The pump would need to be mounted in a different location. Most homes are not built with dedicated return lines unfortunately.

Very important point. Due to using the closed loop system within the hot/cold water plumbings, it is very important that the water heater is clean because you will be drinking from it. This hot water will be circulated within your potable water system as well. All the settlements, corrosion, calcium deposits, rotten egg smell (if any) will be part of your drinking water. I would flush the water heater at least twice a year and change the anode rod every year if you have a recirculating pump.

@boby115
@boby115 3 года назад
We love these at the gas company because they do increase your fuel bill. We normally get what is called a high bill complaint after one of these are installed on an existing system. I will admit this one is the best one on the market, just an FYI you should insulate all the hot water lines ( it helps quite a bit). Also you don't need a pump at all if you have a tank type WH in the basement with copper pipes ( still don't forget to insulate those pipes good).
@alexanderkupke920
@alexanderkupke920 3 года назад
It really depends on the local installation and especially the length of the pipe runs. In my house here in Germany I have a furnace that looks somewhat like the one in the video (actually a lot smaller, not sure what the size of that beast is). In this regard plumbing seems not to be that different between the US and Gernany as it looks in other parts. Two bathrooms and the kitchen hooked up, all more or less in one straight line of about 15 yards. So getting hot water takes about 5 to 6 seconds at most. In my parents house there are already two branches and the overall length would be around 25 to 30 yards, without circulation in the bathroom furthest away it can take almost a minute to get hot water, with a hot water tank in the basement. And all hot water lines are insulated (required by code). But for an average residential home you are absolutely right in the point that a circulation pump just running all the time is very much a waste of energy (and money).

Hey there, This is not related to this video. I have lived in trailer houses in Wyoming my entire life. After discovering your channel I have learned so much that I have been doing wrong. I also have a question. Why do so many plumbers refuse to work on trailer/mobile homes? So much of my plumbing is hack job handyman work done myself, because no plumbers in my community will even take look. Is this normal or is there something different here in Wyoming? Also after some of the things I have seen done, admittedly maybe done myself, in mobile homes a video on just that subject might be pretty fun to see. Anyway thanks for spreading so much knowledge. ~Edited for some punctuation.
@badburrito-ti5wr
@badburrito-ti5wr 3 года назад
As a plumber, mobile homes are unique, difficult, dirty and dangerous to work on. Re-piped my sisters trailer for a song and I was reminded why I don't work on them. There is very little room under a trailer, the average height in the crawl space is about 20 inches or less, making crawling, shrimping and scurrying the primary modes of transport, upside, you will discover muscles you never knew you had. The pipes are usually in the floor joists and stub out directly under the cabinets and such. Gaining access means making strategic cuts in the insulation where all sorts of things can fall out from years of dust, dirt, packrat poop, to asbestos. Spiders, scorpions, snakes and vermin (pack rats, coyotes, feral cats) make their home under trailers and can bite, scratch or envenomate. They can also be infected with all sorts of things like rabies, parasites, viruses and flesh-eating bacteria. this includes their excrement as well. The skirt around the trailer, AC ducting, condensation lines and leveling jacks must be negotiated around, making it necessary to have a helper or 2 outside for safety and gophering (go get tools, lights or materials). Lastly, as you mentioned, the last person who worked on it was probably not an experienced plumber and probably made a mess of the plumbing, making a simple job not so simple. For example, if there is a small sewer leak because someone forgot to glue a joint and it has been leaking for years, plumbers have to crawl thru that confined space and have to deal with sewer gas (deadly hydrogen) from the decomposition process, human commutable diseases and even shock hazards. Most normal people would not do this and experienced plumbers know better. All these factors and the fact that there is much easier and more profitable work, make working on trailer plumbing difficult for the plumbers and expensive for the home owner, not because the plumbing itself is difficult, but rather the challenges involved. If I could give some advice, to some owners that have extensive floor or flood damage and have to replace the subfloor anyways. This would be the time to re-pipe and fix any plumbing issues because the plumbing will be accessible from the top. I hope that this answered some questions.

I often come across hot water circulation pumps when doing a home inspection. Every time I have to spend out 10-30 minutes explaining to new home buyers what it's purpose is. Most home buyers chose to unplug the device and not use it. I am a big fan of this channel but feel this video is a little misleading. I tell clients it is very important to set the timer on this pump because I have had some clients leave this pump on 24/7 and end up with $800+ utility bills (mostly from the water heater running all day & night). You may be able to save some water but at what cost? I believe the saying is, " nothing is free ." I would like a hot water circulation pump that turns on with an app or push of a button. Most people don't use hot water at the same time every single day anyways. How about an app where you push ON a few minutes before you want hot water for showers, dishes, etc... and then turns back off shortly after. Would this not save water and utility cost? Maybe a better version of on demand hot water devices?
@djmuscleg

@mannys9130

Slow, but lasts forever. The point of a dielectric union is to stop galvanic corrosion. It's stainless steel, plastic lined, and proper tape/dope or washer use will prevent leaks. It's not an issue.

@@mannys9130 pressing also lasts. I have to fix more leaking solders than leaking pressfits. You dont need that dielectric between brass and Copper. The steel part is directly in contact with the brass from the boiler, thus it WILL eat away over time.

@mannys9130
@mannys9130 3 года назад
Don, you'd be much better off looking into a returnless pump system. Returnless pumps use a mixing valve at the furthest faucet from the water heater to push lukewarm water out of the hot side into the cold water side. The valve closes when the hot water pipe is full of nice hot water, and it opens up when that hot water has cooled below the minimum temperature at the faucet. No return needed since it just goes into the cold side. You can program the pump to run at specific times since it's just you in the house. Morning and night for example for your shower, or midday or afternoon for cooking and doing dishes. Installing the valve on a circuit at the furthest point makes sure hot water is at everything in between as well. This same company shown in the video makes returnless systems. The only downside to it is that the cold water at the sink with the mixing valve won't be very cold because of the lukewarm water that's pushed into it. Not that big of a deal though especially when the benefit is instant hot water at the sink or shower. 😎👌 Returnless systems are way easier to install and I bet they're the ticket for your situation.

I don't know why youtube thought I would be interested in plumbing videos but it was right. (I wonder what was the first one I've seen.) How is this "saving" 12000 gallons ? Do you mean that it saves heating 12000 gallons of water that you don't need? Why is there a pump anyway - isn't this mains pressure from the boiler or tank to the taps ? It seems to be that a dedicated return line wastes energy by circulating hot water which has to be heated whether it's needed or not, whereas no return line means you waste x minutes of cold water waiting for the hot so having a timer means it's only circulated when needed, right? But why a pump and not a valve on the return ?

With pro press this wouldve taken you a quarter of the time ngl

Fittings are much more money, an O-ring will never be as good as a sweat joint for sealing or longevity, and there is no repairability factor in press fittings like a sweated joint. Pro-press and SharkBite are inferior to solder in every way except time and it's not worth it. The ONLY situation I'd even consider using a press fitting is in a situation where I couldn't stop water flow or drain the pipe fully and therefore couldn't sweat a joint correctly. Even then, I'd do it under duress.

@@mannys9130 sweated joint are what kind? English isnt my native language and I see a lot of the same names for different fittings haha. Are those with the brass ring? Because those are the best indeed.

Do you live in your car? Less than 1000 gallons/year (3 gallons/day) of water is incredibly light usage

@@fixerupperer My thoughts exactly. 😸 3 gallons a day when a low flow toilet is 1.3 per flush? Roughly 2 flushes per day right there. No hand washing, no dish washing, no laundry washing, no cooking with water, no brushing of teeth, etc allowed after 2 flushes. 😸

Upgrading to the new model. Thermostat and Bluetooth technology. Do you install many circulation pumps?
@kenbrown2808
@kenbrown2808 3 года назад
@@RogerWakefield they're standard issue for any custom home, here. kind of pointless on a tankless water heater, though, IMO. move the hot water storage from a very well insulated tank, to the much less well insulated pipes in your walls. now a circ pump that was connected to the tankless controller so it rushed the hot water through the lines when you turned a tap on would be a good pairing with a tankless.

Great Video, and great product. Just an observation, you are supposed to use thermal compound under that sensor. And you can't install that head in that direction. you would have to remove the 4 screws and rotate the head, both of these are according to the manufacturer. Also it may be useful to solder that dielectric union to that pipe without the plastic ring, then install your ring and nut with the piece of pipe to your Tee to solder. A little less risk of melting your gasket because you won't have direct heat on the union with the plastic on it. Just something I have done for this task. Great video! keep em coming.

For once I'm going to disagree with you here. If your system already uses a hot water circulation pump, this device might save you money. If it didn't and you just got it installed, you'll faint when you will recieve your next energy bill. If you want to install such a system (can be useful for comfort if your hot water generator is very far away from your bathroom), you'd better make sur all of your hot water pipes are thoroughly insulated, or you're going to have a heating system that constantly heats the wall where the pipes are, or worse, the crawlspace behind the house. When I sell a hot water circulation pump, I never try to tell the client they'll be going to save money, because they won't. Energy is always more expensive than water. I just tell them that it's indeed going to be more comfortable.

You're assuming the pump will be running all the time. It's important to program the run times. Nobody needs recirc at night. Nobody needs it when they're at work. If you're lazy and don't program it, sure you'll definitely waste money.
@Kelvallontan
@Kelvallontan 3 года назад
@@mannys9130 I should indeed have said "as soon as it works" instead of "constantly". Still, you have to program it loosely if you want real comfort (because you don't want to wait forever naked in the shower if you take a shower 1 hr late instead of right on your usual time). And as soon as it turns, that's akin to a central heating system circulating water to and from radiators. It better be insulated, and even then, it does cost a pretty penny.
