In this video I show you a simple DIY upgrade you can make to your overlanding rig to make sure your AGM battery is getting the proper charging voltage it needs to reach it's full potential and stay happy and healthy. I go through the simple steps of installing the Voltage Booster Pro into my 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner. My charging voltage improves from 13.9 volts to over 14.5 volts. This gives my the proper charging power necessary to maintain my Odyssey Performance AGM Battery.
Now I have the power necessary to run my Diode Dynamic light bar, ditch lights and fog lights as well as my Setpower fridge through my Blue Sea accessory panel, Smittybuilt Winch and my onboard Viair air compressor.
Below is a list of other gear and modifications on this Overlanding Rig.
BF Goodrich KO2 285 70 R17

The problem with that is if you go for a longer trip and your battery is fully charged, now voltage has to drop to 13.5-13.8 volts. Called "float charge", if it doesn't happen youll overcharge your battery with 14+ volts. You solved one problem of underchaging and created another one of potential overcharging on a longer trips.

I stopped watching around 2:30. I was hoping a new video like this one would have a new solution in my case. You see I have a 2019 Tacoma with an Odyssey battery, but the 3rd gen Tacomas don't have that particular fuse. In my truck, the ECU controls the voltage of the alternator and not the alternator itself. I'm in the same boat as you as my alternator is only charging my start battery to about 90 percent of it's rated Ah capacity. I'm probably going to lose a year of life off an expensive battery. I have a NOCO battery charger and used the AGM setting, but I could only get the voltage up to 13.7 volts. I contacted Odyssey and they think maybe the charger was in "float mode". They suggested to draw the battery voltage down below 12.6 volts, and the charger will move to "bulk" charging. The Odyssey rep also mentioned voltage up to 14.7 volts would be fine. I will attempt this very soon. Otherwise good video. Edit: I did keep on watching the video and see you installed the BlueSea OLED voltmeter. I did the exact same install haha. A bunch of people thought I was nuts to do that when others just bought a cheap cigarette lighter adapter thing to watch their voltage.

I have the same NOCO battery charger and found it does not properly charge the battery even in AGM mode. That was one of the reasons I made the upgrade. For a few extra bucks I ordered the Blue Sea volt meter already installed in the accessory panel. I would have had to buy one either way. Thanks for watching and I would like to hear what you end up finding as a solution for your Tacoma.

Be careful as i ran this product for a short period of time as well. But users need to be absolutely aware that when running "high" and not drawing much poser, you will be charging at 15.1v and even more and will absolutely cook the battery. I have an SPOD with a digital readout which is how i knew this. It is a viable tool under the right circumstances and knowledge. I eventually went to a true dual battery setup with a Redarc BCDC charger. Blessings to you on the adventures!

You are correct. They clearly talk about this in their directions. You should not charge an AGM battery above the recommended voltage. For my purposes I will be keeping it set to low which charges at 14.5-14.6 volts. I’ve been running it for about a month now with no issues. Thanks for the message and caution. Happy New Year!!!

@destinationjourney_overland absolutely! It's a product that works....a cheap fix, but caution boost mode!

The other thing that helps is to replace the OEM alternator with a DC Power, Inc. alternator. Definitely check everything with a voltmeter. AGM batteries need a specific amount of voltage. Too little, AGMs will eventually die. Too much, they fry.

Can anyone tell me if this will work for the 8th Gen Camry there's two ignition fuse spots just like on the other Toyota and mine is in the top spot closest to the engine when standing on the drivers side of the vehicle just trying to upgrade my voltage but I can't get a response from voltage booster pro

I think that the safest bet would be to keep trying to get a hold of voltage booster Pro to answer that question. Let me know what you find out.

Does the manufacturer only make the Voltage Booster for Toyota vehicles?

That is correct. Toyota and Lexus.

Do you know if this has an adverse effect on the alternator?

I haven’t found any research that says it does. I have been running it for 5 months now and it works perfect. I’ve noticed that my batteries resting voltage has improved since before I installed the Voltage Booster Pro. I’m happy with it.
