Is your entire plan for affordability about cutting taxes? You think that is the silver bullet to help people meet their daily needs? And only Conservatives can do that for you, right? But what if you were Conned by the Conservative party who favours the corporate class? What if Pierre, their leader, is highly involved if private real estate and gets the most donor money from those people, which means PP and the Cons would screw the poor and working class if they got into power and would never make housing affordable for the people who most need it and would always make sure rich capitalists get the lion's share of profits? What if the problem is the system itself? Did you know a government like Canada with currency sovereignty could create money to make Universal Goods And Services like food, water, housing, transportation and expanded healthcare a reality without raising taxes on anybody except the millionaire class? Or, just ignore all these questions and pretend Conservatives will save the day.

I forgot that in 2015 housing was super affordable and everybody who wanted a home, had one, no 25-year mortgages or anything, no over priced million dollar homes in 2015, and no food insecurity, nobody was in poverty, no educational shortages in support, no healthcare issues at all. Life was gravy in 2015 for the rich! That's who it was best for. Just like in 1995, when Liberals were in charge, life was better than 2015, but still best for the rich. Do you not see the pattern? It doesn't have as much to do with which party is in charge, it has to do with the SYSTEM that underlines all our lives and that is capitalism. Capitalism is unsustainable. It is a cancerous system that only gets worse by the year. That is the systemic problem we face. And Conservatives are openly encouraging capitalist business growth. Nature outcome of late stage capitalism. Which party offers more social supports? Which party is the most capitalist friendly? If someone can point to anytime in history where Conservative policies have led to better health, happiness and prosperity for the most amount of people, I'd like to know. The happiest countries are consistently Finland, Denmark, Iceland, places like that with strong social support programs from the Government, higher taxes on the super rich, less inequality. Maybe the only far right country that has a high standard of living is apartheid Israel who are carrying out a genocid e of Palestinian people. So not really a good example to look up to!
Farming is a very gas intensive process, carbon tax absolutely pushes food prices up. Grocery stores operate on profit margins, which are percentages above the cost of a product. When food costs increase then so too does the mark up. A loaf of bread that costs a store $2 and they want to make 20%, would have a price tag of $2.50. This yields the store 50 cents. If the cost of the loaf goes up to $2.40, then the new price tag is $3 and yields the store 60 cents. Simple math. In Jagmeet's world, he would like to see the stores lower their profit margin so they only make the same profit on a higher cost of goods, thereby lowering their return on investments. SO yes, the grocery stores are going to make more money as the cost of goods goes up, because they expect a certain % return on their investments. They way he describes it here makes it sound like some guy is just sitting in an office, randomly raising prices. As cost goes up, prices goes up, and so does profit.
Remember the days before Superstore? It wasn't even a thing. Then all the money Loblaws made spawned Superstore, NO Frills, etc. etc. They Popped up like weeds all across Canada.... bringing JOBS. Jobs, jobs and more jobs. All big name grocery stores in Canada have been building more and more stores across Canada the last 40 years...CREATING JOBS. Corporations will not pay extra tax to transport their goods and will pass the tax down to the consumer to save the “holy” stock value. We are paying increased tax for ourselves as well as for corporations and it’s getting out of hand.
53 yo guy from Nova Scotia. Mr. Singh, the NDP lost me after a Labour Day rally years ago where the then NDP Premier of Nova Scotia spoke to working class Nova Scotians. To my surprise, "NDP!" Premier Darrell Dexter gave a politically safe speech about bettering the "middle class" and then got the hell out of there as fast as he could when he finished. It was like he was embarrassed to be there with the working class "mob." So! Two things bother me about you Mr. Singh. How come I never never see you in a photo op with working class homeless Canadians living in the tent Trudeauvilles in the big cities of Canada? And, you haven't openly addressed the ethical problem of being coalitian partner of a minority Liberal government and your interest in being around long enough to collect your government pension? Instead of taxing business owners and capping their profits, how about return the 2B collected so far from the carbon tax and give it back to the small businesses you took it from. I would think that in a capitalist market we would support more businesses, lower the prices, give people more options. ???
Interesting how grocery workers could afford the food in their stores PRIOR to the costly coalition. YOU are the problem, not the stores. You want to hike taxes of Loblaws and Bell Canada. This will result in layoffs. No jobs = no paycheques. Don’t you get it yet? You want to keep raising wages… you think Loblaws cares about that… NO! They will pass the cost down to the consumer, just like they do with the carbon tax. All this will do is create further obstacles for small businesses that can’t afford the cost of labour to their point of extinction. Less competition, higher prices for all. Our entire country is nearly destroyed. You don’t have enough common sense to manage a hotdog cart, never mind the country. It’s time for an election!
The deliberate, almost complete lack of competition in the grocery sector, among others, is one of the direct causes of this issue. Canada is incredibly friendly to monopolistic corporate tactics and nothing's going to change without changing that.
Yeah, what did you expect in late stage capitalism? Monopolies are the predictable outcome of late stage capitalism. Private ownership of the means of production means the super rich can buy anything; politicians, laws, favours, other smaller companies, etc. If you don't want monopolies, then be a critic of the root problem: Capitalism. Learn and be an advocate of a better system of resource management as proposed by free thinkers like Peter Joseph "A Viable Society" on TZMOfficialChannel or Michael Tellinger and One Small Town Contributionism.
