Thank you so much for the help!! I wasn't getting any sound out at all but after doing that thumb exercise I'm now trying to get through my first scale!
Nice job. Retired chorus teacher now teaching foster kids beginning band instruments. I appreciate the sequencing and intentional simplicity without silliness. Thanks. Kam Malone Murphy Harpst Children's Center.
Just got my daughters clarinet today... She can now at least make a sound which puts her ahead of some of the grade 6 Students. We had fun playing around with it.
I'm a new band teacher (a brass player) and it's been a while since I took a methods class. I remembered the basics, but there was a lot of stuff I had forgotten. You have some really nice visualizations (especially blowing out the candle) that I liked a lot. This will be super helpful for starting some beginning clarinet players this week. Thank you so much!
It's been a long time since I played clarinet as well so I'm just going through the steps to get myself to where I used to be clarinets are beautiful instrument!
Technically, ancient reed instruments were NOT clarinets...as, by definition, the clarinet overblows at the 12th (not the octave). We look to Denner as inventing the first true clarinet. The word clarinet is actually derived from "clarino," which was a wooden Italian TRUMPET. So yes...far more interesting than "we had this in Ancient Greece."
This technically is not a history class. While the information is interesting it could have been delivered far more gracefully, thus possibly earning you more reputation and gratitude than received. Possibly.
Great video! Simple and concise. With regards to the ligature and screw: It seems as if screws always point to the right - regardless of whether it’s at the front or back /leather or metal, etc. Would love to know whether this is consistent with your experience?
04/28/21… thank you for the lesson. I’m a guitar player and just acquired a clarinet (and a violin and two trumpets). This video helped me make my first sound
Thank you very much! What a good explanation. My mother in law gave me a clarinet for my birthday yesterday, so I'll have a go at learning some tunes. It's got a great sound!!
very informative, thank you; i haven't taken my instrument out of the case yet, i was looking for assembly instructions, i'll subscribe and watch your post a couple more times, and proceed with confidence, thanks again
My aunt found a Clarinet idk where but it’s from 1991 it says and gave it to me and this helped me build it and make a sound but the only thing wrong with the clarinet is that is missing the brown piece to hold everything you can make a sound but need to hold it from the bell
I'm playing a bliss clarinet right now, it's my first time playing. Im kinda good at it but I still need practice. Can you make a video about how to play a bliss clarinet, please??? 😃😃😃😃
Thank you! I’ve been playing for 10 years, but I had 9 different teachers during the first 7 years, so no one really taught me the basics. A few weeks ago I realized that air was coming out of my mouth, so unfortunately I have to start over again with my mouth. Hopefully it’s good in a couple weeks. This video helped a lot!
Hi, Thank you for the wonderful video, I followed your way to blow the clarinet, how come my sound was in high pitch sound, it was nothing like yours... Where did I go wrong?
I needed to do something for me so I decided to buy a clarinet and get back in touch with my 6th grade self. I managed to put it together by myself (thanks for reinforcing that i did it right! 😁) and it is all coming back - 40+ years later. Great lesson. Thank you!
I’m a flutist in a high school band and my director recently told me to try the clarinet. This is a good lesson, considering it’s half the length of every other video I found. Thank you!
Really important... right now Im missing one top front tooth. It will take a year to repair.. implant. Question... can I still learn to play the Clarinet? Can I just use upper and lower lips? Hope so. Or... does it really matter if I use just one tooth ... and still have a proper lip seal?
@El Rico - The remaining top front tooth will be enough to hold the mouthpiece steady in the correct position. Your upper and lower lips are what provide the airtight seal, so the lack of that tooth won't stop you playing. HTH
i saw another lesson and it works. it is said you put your bottom lips slightly inside of your bottom teeth (this will automatically give you a flat chin) and tug it the upper teeth on the top. close your whole mouth and blow "Hoo~" it works for me.
Maybe your reed was not wetted sufficiently, or it was placed too high or too low, or was too high of hardness for a beginning student. Maybe a 1.5 or 2 would be good.
I haven’t played clarinet since high school, but I recently had a baby girl and it inspired me to pick up the clarinet once again. What a beautiful sound it makes
The video could have included some pointers about how to use the diaphragm for inhaling & blowing an adequate air-stream through the clarinet to produce a good sound.
It's intended to be the very first steps in playing. Yes, breath production and control is vital, but if you have no prior knowledge of clarinets or other wind instruments, this lesson alone provides a LOT of info to take on board.
I new to clarinet (senior recorder player) and just got my first clarinet and I have surprised myself being able to play notes right out of the box. But I have a problem and don’t know if it me or the clarinet when I play a “G” I get a perfect “F” when I play a “F” I get a perfect “E” and so on this goes on through the scale. Plus I can’t get a note at all on the upper register which might be me but I have use a couple of tuning apps and they all show the Clarinet play one note out is it me? Or do I have a problem with the Clarinet? Oh and thanks for the courses they will help a lot.
You can get a neck strap for a clarinet to support the weight of the instrument, making it easier to hold. I know this because I've got one, and it makes holding and playing the clarinet much easier for me! Great video though and thank you very much for sharing.
