Hi Claire, thanks for your expertise. I just a fiddle leaf fig plant and it has relish brown spots on the back of some leaves. Kind of like someone splattered paint on it. I don't see any bugs. A couple of small holes. I haven't found any photos like this. Any ideas? Thank you, Chris W.

It might be spider mites as they are very small and not visible sometimes to our eyes. Treat with an insecticide spray until new leaves come out clean. For more support you are welcome to join and post inside our helpul fiddle leaf fig community! fiddleleaffigplant.com/community

Hi Claire. I had a problem with the fungus gnats and have sprayed insecticide. Removed dirt and it seems better but they are still there. I am watering once every 2 weeks. When I water, I do pour the water all around the top of the plant. Should I just pour it along the trunk and not do all the dirt? I water enough to allow it to drip thru the bottom. It is a big pot. It then has 2 weeks to dry out but obviously this has still allowed conditions for gnats.

It sounds like your watering routine is great. I would continue with the spray until you have gotten rid of the infestation. Another suggestion is to remove the top few inches of soil and redress it with fresh soil so that any larvae from the gnats have been removed.

Hi! I think that mine has the spider mites but also like some flies? The soil is generally dry. Now i moved it outdoors for some weeks and they were gone but now they came back it seems even if it’s outdoors and the soil is not moist.

Sounds like it might be fungus gnats. You can use an insecticide spray on the soil to get rid of them for good.

Hey Claire. I hesitated to move my Fiddle but I wanted to move her to a sunnier location for the winter because here in Vancouver, BC the sun just doesn’t reach as far west anymore. So within a month of moving her she sprouted a small pathetic little pale leaf at the very end of this very leggy stem it grew. So what would you recommend? I'm thinking of snapping off the stem with little leaf what do you think? And do i snap it right off to where it began sprouting? My Frieda is very finicky... And yes she's been put back to her obviously favorite spot. She's never had bugs knock on wood.

Winter is tough with less light. Are you able to set up a grow light for your plant while it is indoors? I would leave the new growth unless it hasn't grown and is taking energy from the plant. You can simply prune it from the base of the stem of the leaf and if the reset of the branch is leggy, you can prune that down to promote more growth in that area. Good luck!

I had a large ivy planted that literally just today saw lots of little worms in it, yet no little gnats & it got me concerned to really move the dirt around the FLF to only see those gnats, I'm nervous!

Hi Claire! I recently bought 4 big FLF & I randomly move the dirt around on 1 that I replanted, only because it was leaning in the little nursery pot, and noticed a few little gnats flying out, HELP! I know this cannot be good not just for him but the others😟
