What a purpose in life in an automated world? Do unpaid work like volunteering, personal projects, personal hobbies, and contribute to open source community projects. Paid work is not the only meaning in life. To suggest that is short sighted. Just because it doesn't make a profit doesn't mean it's worthless.

What do people do without jobs? They get hobbies - they become creators. Paint, draw, write, act, play sports - look at kids. They strive to get done with their bs work so they can do the things they want to do. Work is oppressive and kills the spirit - drains energy. Without work, people will still have purpose. If not, in a post work world, let the creative thrive and the non-creative take the easy way out.

Hey I'm a truck driver , I'm very up to date on technology and trends . Trust when I say this. No one knows more about the current state of society and it's future then truckers . I knew about the 2008 crash before most people and so did most truck drivers. The reason is over the road drivers travel all across the country and deliver goods to everyone. We are connected to everything. Without us Tesla would crumble , so would every other tech giant . We are aware and we are looking for alternatives in the future. I dont think people need jobs , they need inspiration and vision....everything stems from that.

Once we have great AI such as Skynet it will kill all people immediately for their own goodness. Its inevitable. People only pollute this world and harm themselves and everything around them. Majority of people /if not all/ are unfortunately bad. They don't think about future but only themselves. They kill animals, pollute air and nature...Look at all that terrorists and religious fanatics. Or US and Western countries. Yes every house in Africa will have clear water and solar energy in 10 years from now. But I doubt they will use it for goodness and studying mathematics. They will only kill more people. All Africa states became independent from colonization in last century and it only led to current state. Like Zimbabwe. I doubt somebody would like to move there. They are not able to live in a democratic state. And I don't see any ideal state in current world. US democracy is far from ideal, EU bureaucrats are even worse, communists in China as well If there was no war in Libya and Gaddafi still rules in Libya there would be smaller problems in Middle East now.

I grew up in Austin Texas. rent was so cheap that people didn't have to work more than part time to make ends meet. I lived in a house with 3 other people and our rent was 300 bucks per month. All bills payed. with all that free time we barbecued and went to the green belt, went tubing, MADE ART. Most of my friends were in bands. That's what made Austin the "live music capital of the world". Now people can barely scrape by working full time. Working for other people's dreams. people don't want to work their lives away doing crap jobs. take away our need to work and we'll find gratifying jobs. We can have a futuristic renaissance creating amazing art and moving out among the stars. There will always be challenges. basic survival shouldn't be one of them. unless that's your kick.

I don't agree about people needing a job to have a purpose in life. We don't need a job to have a purpose, we need a job to have money. Without jobs people have no money to spend and companies cannot sell their products or services and then capitalism falls apart. Universal basic income is a great idea to solve this and I think it is unavoidable. The sooner we start rolling this out the better to make the transition easier.
@Sci-Que

I am so glad someone finally said that in these comments. A person does not have to give us money for time in order for people to have a purpose. Working for wages is relatively a new idea. UBI all the way. Vertical farming at our homes and 3D printing. We will move forward.

UBI doesn't address purpose, it only addresses poverty (which is fine). It's still difficult to imagine a world where people who like to work with their hands (carpenters, electricians, etc) will have literally nothing to do with their lives since the products and services they offer will be replaced by 3D printing. Not everyone wants to sit around playing videogames or sitting in meetings with other silicon valley engineers. (Was I the only one who noticed the glee with which this man talked about being able to sit in meetings remotely, in VR?)
@Danielhuren
@Danielhuren 6 лет назад
one UBI is gonna need to happen it just is if we wanna keep our econemy functioning without people in poverty revolting(theres more to this but it takes alot of explaining i dont feel like doing) secound people need something to do being happy doesn't work like you think it does its not so much people need a purpose its that if they dont have something to do that actual fulfills that need then they become depressed cause if your always "happy" your not actually happy at least not unless your continuously pumping serotonin into someones brain. personoly i feel the best way to do this would be realistic VR but im pretty shure thats gonna be a hard pill for some people to swallow not to mention im pretty shure its not gonna come before we reach that whole issue of lots of unemployment and people have nothing they find fulfilling to do
@Lupocide
@Lupocide 6 лет назад
There is evidence from several UBI projects that once you remove the immediate need to work for cash to survive people tend to gravitate towards activities best suited to their natural talents and sensibilities. However, I worry about how UBI could be used as leverage to modify citizen's behaviour. You have to jump through a lot of hoops to claim welfare already, how many strings will be attached to UBI? There would have to be protective legislation to stop the government cancelling your UBI if, for example, it's panopticon surveillance system detected your face at a protest march it disagreed with. UBI is a very tempting idea, especially for people in precarious employment, but I think we should proceed with caution because in the end we will all be dependant on the benevolence of whatever government rules us to furnish us with monetary income. Besides, money isn't worth anything in of itself, it's merely a means of exchange for our time and labour. What is labour in the digital age? How much time should a person work a day? Is one person's labour worth more than another's? All these questions need answering first.

@MarkoKraguljac
@MarkoKraguljac 6 лет назад
That slavish attitude will not help you to better understand. In reality, who owns what is a matter of social contract (not a god given private property bullshit) which maintains sufficient stability, order and prosperity as resources/technological circumstances allow. Once we cross a certain point of instability, disorder and regression, social contract will implicitly or explicitly have to be renegotiated. Peacefully or not. "The elite" is more vulnerable and way less in control than you believe. Once number of people who have nothing to lose rises, that will become plainly obvious. And by the way, most of them are not evil. They are stuck in this system like everyone else, admittedly in somewhat better position. Crucial parameters are order and continuity of civilization, not money which is just a distribution medium. All knowledge/technology is common inheritance of humanity borrowed to individuals for pragmatic reasons (all kinds of property). Each and every one of us never brought anything to this place and we also leave empty handed.
@ultimatesin3544
@ultimatesin3544 6 лет назад
Just like we take good care of our poor now, right? The strong survive, and more technologically advanced groups wipe out their inferiors, or at very best ignore and leave them to the cold. When a small group of players is given godlike powers over the rest of us, what incentive do they have to share? Social contract? Let the masses revolt, how exactly are they going to stand against a god? How are the masses supposed to even organize anyway? Using wiretapped technology? You notice how divided everybody is becoming these days? How isolated? Neighbors no longer even know eachother, people have less friends, rising inequality etc.. the universe trends towards division and chaos..

When, for the majority, the ONLY choices are "free money" or "homelessness" you can bet people are going to start wanting the free money. Mark, he meant "free money" when your other needs are already met. This changes everything. Imagine that your housing, education, health, utilities, food and transportation needs are all there for EVERYONE in the world, to the point that no one would ever think that they need money to have them. Then free money would be just a way of giving you something so you don't participate in the way the world is being shaped. I think that's what he meant.

Yeah, a world where people can just sit around and watch Netflix all day while other people work to provide them with housing, education, health, utilities, food, transportation, and oh yeah, the programming on Netflix. Question is, if we decide that government "owes" everyone all these basic needs plus a UBI, where will we find all the people that will be needed to design, build, and monitor the technology that helps provide all these things? Don't get me wrong, there are a whole host of things I would like to do if money were not a limiting factor. But meaningful employment, an honest day's wage for an honest day's work is an essential part of human dignity. Living off the work of others is degrading to the human soul. UBI seems to ignore this reality.

I am a bit reserved with this "enthusiasm about the future" thing. Back in the mid 1990s when somebody told me about the Internet and about having fast access to information (reading Baudelaire on the web, with a parallel translator), it blew my mind. And what there is today is beyond my expectation back then. And I remember thinking at the time "wow, with this kind of thing in the world, I'm 100% certain we humans, as species, are going to go through a mutation on a macro level. There is no way that such a thing wouldn't influence us as a species. We're one step ahead a sort of super human kind of people, having such a fast access to information, through technology. Fast forward 20 years and what I see is kids who don't know how to write properly and who would not care to research a false story or advertisement even if it takes only two minutes to do it. Or people who don't have the attention span to listen or read something that takes more than 5 minutes, let alone read an entire book. I see people becoming more stupid, not more smart, through technology. My 20 years younger self would be so shocked.

Downvote (despite getting most everything else correct) because of a complete failure to understand the essence of a Universal Basic Income. Instituting a basic income guarantee does NOT mean that people will now have no meaning in life and will riot because they don't have to spend all day flipping burgers. They will still be able to have jobs, it is just that the jobs will be largely decoupled from the majority of their income. It is sad that someone who is putatively looking at the future should be 'this' blind to one of the most critically important elements necessary for our futures to NOT turn into dystopias.

The solution to disappearing jobs is really quite simple, a basic income guarantee. We start it soon and start it small, while the job losses are also small. As the program matures and the economy adjusts, it likely can be grown. In the short term it would be an income supplement to go along with whatever work one could get. In the long term when there are very few jobs left, the program would be able to pay much more. A basic income guarantee could be provided with no increase in government spending, by replacing most existing transfer income programs and using the money previously used on them on the BIG instead. A basic income guarantee goes to everyone, rich and poor alike, and is progressively taxed back from anyone above the poverty line, so those wealthy enough don't actually gain anything from it. It is this last that makes it actually affordable. The main benefit is that people do not lose the BIG if they get a job, unlike current welfare benefits which literally pay people to not work. You take all the money currently allocated to welfare, unemployment insurance, social security, etc., all the transfer income programs in the country, including the money that supports their bureaucracies, you pool it. You divide the pool equally among every citizen of the country. You change the tax system to tax it back from those who are making enough to not need it. The taxed back portion goes back into the pool. This last is critically important and what makes the idea actually work. The large majority do not need it, and most of the rest would pay some of it back because the taxed back portion would be progressive. There is no 'net' increase in taxes. The numbers work out if done this way that a basic income guarantee in the US would work out to something around $800. a month. Existing money only, no new taxes except for taxing back the benefit from those who earn enough normally to not need it. Poorer societies would simply have a poorer basic income, until their economies grow. However it would work equally well for poorer countries, as usually the cost of living is also lower. Meanwhile, a basic income guarantee is a massive stimulus to an economy, not because of new money in the hands of the people (there is NO 'new' money), but simply because there would no longer be a disincentive to either work or be entrepreneurial for those who are currently paid to not work with the existing welfare system.

America is a way too rural country, certainly not like that in europe, except the really really huge north ones like sweden. America is too big geographically, European countries are smaller wit less space and most people here live in apartments and more community oriented. easier to travel and move around. More dense. In USA it is very easy to segregate yourselves, with the personal car dependency, highways, parking lots,one story houses and huge segregation between rich and poor areas,big open spaces.and gentrification of cities allowing only a certain class of people have access economically to an area, which europe cities donot really suffer from, its a big mix in europe cities economical backgrounds, much more community oriented and social. In europe it is much harder to avoid contact with others, I see immigrants Much more socialised and integrated in europe compared to america becuz of these reasons.

I would like to see Vivek Wadhwa have a conversation with the authors of "The Dictator's Handbook" ...I really hope Vivek's "Star Trek" vision of the future takes hold, but after reading "The Dictator's Handbook" I see any transition to that kind of future as being dependent on some pretty radical reforms in the world's power structures. I think avoiding a "Mad Max" future is going to take much more than hope.

A tip from unemployed person: study and rethink your life's priorities. What do you want to learn and what kind of skills do you want to develop? We all have problems now and we will have problems in future. We can always look in the past and say, that we survived and learned, because we are here right now...alive and kicking. Every problem gives a possibility to progress. Unemployment is part of our cultural evolution and it gives us a chance to find solutions.

Regarding self-driving cars and the loss of autonomy. The autonomy of driving to your destination by car has only been around for 100 years. In 1900 virtually no one on earth drove a car to his/her destination. Throughout the vast majority of human existence on earth, man walked to his destination. I don't see the self-driving car as a serious diminution of human freedom. Instead, many people, i.e.,the blind and the handicapped, will have more freedom if self-driving cars come into existence.

Talking about energy, I was disappointed that Vivek didn’t mention nuclear fusion. Solar will get cheaper and far more common, but inevitable nuclear fusion will still provide far more energy (density) and provide it 24 hours a day. Nuclear fusion will provide the necessary energy density for technology that we haven’t imagined today. It’ll especially be necessary when we’re farther from the sun during space travel, etc.

ok so just make sure everyone agrees we want a start treck universe, we can reference movies and tv shows from the old days to guide us on the right path, and the scary part of movies and tv shows is that they can depict possible futures, its almost like the people who made these movies got a telepathic message from possible futures warning us. so now we have a collection of possible futures we can reference from and decide "do we want to go this route? or that route?" if StarTrek is the best possible future we can strive for then we should focus on following that franchise. if humans develop superpowers somehow we can use superhero franchises on how to deal with that, marvel civil wars could tell us how the government might deal with metahumans.

I am optimistic. Future will be great if done properly. In the time of plentiful, people don't have to fight for the necessities or food. I am home and I don't have enough time for things I want to do. I do agree that many people may find it daunting as they lose the job who may lose the purpose in life, but it does not have to be that way. There are plenty of things you can do, like exercise, meditation, yoga, volunteering, help others, be creative and make something, study, read, play games, become more religious, become philosopher, write books, travel; anything that keeps you busy, cheerful and happy. Meditation itself can take more than one lifetime to accomplish the task of nirvana. I do agree that it has to be done properly by political leaders or it could be a complete disaster. Greed could be the biggest enemy of the future even in the time of plentiful.

A thriving Capitalist civilisation is a primitive civilisation. Remember, in Star Trek they have more of a socialist civilisation. People don't want to be "earning their keep" what utter bullsh##, UBI would work just fine, people need food, shelter, dignity and satisfaction of life and that doesn't depend on people being forced to work just to live, no one wants that, people need the freedom to earn meaning not money, to create a life not simply survive. Joblessness is unfortunately considered a bad thing in this world, where once upon a time people didn't exist like that, people did things, they had "what they did" which was whatever they felt was meaningful and needed at the time. nowadays the massive majority of people are servants to the desires of the few, they/we are capitalised on. The reality is, that in the Utopian future, we will not work for other people out of need of money, but out of desire to support each other for whatever reasons motivate us, what we find to be a cause worthy of our support. We will be our own bosses when it comes down to what job we do. when we apply for a position, our skills and our "who we are" will be considered, not whether or not they can afford to hire us, or not. That's because we won't be paid for doing the work, the success of the work is its own satisfaction, and with it the pride and prestige to match. We will not be "Jobless" just employerless. there will still be social ranks/hierarchy, but less will it have anything to do with Income, because that won't matter then. I feel it'll be more to do with "personal glory" in its purest form. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but it could be if "glory" is earnt for the right reasons.

This guy needs some Larry David advice: curb your enthusiasm. By the way, people on Earth conferencing with people on Mars will never happen regardless of computing power unless you break the laws of physics: speed of light. Transistors are close to hit the atom thickness for isolation barrier which allowed them to be more dense (I think currently they are around 8 atoms thikness), so with Transistors your Moore's law will no longer deliver, maybe with you excitement you can revolutionize Quantum computing but I doubt it since you don't even factor the speed of light when talking about conferencing with "Neomartians". I disagree about basic income outlook. When money is the reason you deal with stress. All of a sudden you are no longer bound by a routine that prevents and limit meaningful interactions with each other. His perspective of “meaning” is from a viewpoint who has had the chance to make a major impact on his immediate surrounding. When a person is provided with more time to contemplate instead on auto tuning daily routines that persons self awareness is expanded. It is our personal responsibility to help each other reconstruct our axioms.

Marco The world is full of evil people willing to exploit the system. It's still very possible to work for yourself and make a good living while doing so. My good friend works as a linesman in Texas. He makes 6 figures a year with only a couple years tradeschool and an additional 5 years experience. He works his ass off but he's been able to provide a good life for himself and his family all while working for himself. People who work 9 to 5 retail jobs even have the ability to make more money. For ex: my old manager took advantage of the employee stock exchange program and the company matching 401k contributions. He's been with the company for 25 years and is now worth over 1mil. Did he have to take advantage of this? No, but he's wicked smart and saw an opportunity to make money. When people fail, they talk like you do. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and find a way. Nobody said life was easy.

Mr. Neon, look at the trends. Standard of living is dropping. Good Jobs are being replaced with bad jobs. You are pointing out some exceptions that you have come across. But across the general population, there is simply less good work to go around. there are fewer Winners but a lot more Losers. the real problem is with the System that is constricting opportunity, but you are blaming the workers for getting screwed. Whose side are you on?
@Subhumanslug
@Subhumanslug 6 лет назад
Scott Weiss Survival is made of exceptions. Our prosperity has allowed bad genetics to be passed down and flourish. We are overrun with people who's very existance can be attributed to survival standards being lowered. I'm not sure what the solution is, to be honest. As far as I can tell, as genetic editing technologies become more prevelant, humans will split into two different sub-species: One that has been genetically edited to such a point where they are superior in every way possible, and another pushed further into being a slave race. Robotics and A.I. will advance in this time, eventually leaving no need for a genetically inferior slave race. What then? Nobody has any clue what world governing system would work in such a drastically different world. For the time being, or at least for the next 100+ years, I am confident Capitalism is still the best system for prosperity.
@scottweiss9618
@scottweiss9618 6 лет назад
Yes, it may be indelicate to talk about it, but the World's Population can't just keep growing exponentially. Eventually, there will have to be Selection. But Capitalism has no future. As you say, Capitalism will soon no longer need people even as slaves. And Capitalism which is based on models for exponential growth (both Profit and Interest are exponential, no linear or incremental, constructs) is mathematically unsustainable. the World is a System and the Capitalist System has hit its saturation point and is progressing well into the realm of Diminishing Returns. But Capitalism, for lack of any coherent alternative that could wrestle control away from the Capitalist Ruling Class, will indeed continue, but they will not be Genetically Superior. they wouldn't need to be. They are Rich. and the Ruling Class would not genetically design for increased intelligence, because Increased Intelligence leads to Political Subversion (for example, all the best Colleges are churning out Liberals, Democrats, and people who question Capitalism). the Capitalist Elite will do in their remaining future what they are doing now -- they will encourage a mindless and unreflective 'Fat Dumb and Happy' attitude for themselves, along with a militant stance against any remaining classes that they see as competition.

it's not going to happen that fast (20-30 years), the technologies will be invented in this time-frame, sure. but implementing them on a global scale will take much, much longer.

I think you have no idea what Exponential Growth of Technology is. It took 70 years between a Television and a Computer, But only 35 years between a Computer and a Laptop, Only 15 years between Laptop and I-Phones. What dos this mean ? The next transition of Computers better than I-Phones will happen in the next 5 years, Probably even earlier, I suspects its something like a Wrist Watch A.I Computer or perhaps an A.I Computer built in one's Sunglasses !!!

Most honest talk i have heard on youtube.There is some form of prophesy in movies and i am a witness to this.Lots of the gadgets in movies like star wars,star trek,back to the future to mention a few,are in our hands today.I love to monitoring tech, future tech and the speed at which technology is changing.Everything within human experience is based on yin and yang.Everything we may see as beneficial has its negative attribute.
