Seriously, I found it tough to sleep the night I watched this. It really affected me emotionally. What a great film. I kinda cried even editing this video.

Good analysis! I especially liked your mention of real dreams and how they vanish in literally seconds after you wake up. It makes the "forgetting" in this movie more justifiable. The other movie you referred to, is it Five Centimeters per Second? It is another movie by the same director, Makoto Shinkai, but the two characters drift apart, despite a hopeful romantic reunion between the two of them at an empty train station at night in the winter mid-way through the film. One of them deals with the drifting apart better than the other. But it does end bittersweet like that.

Me inscrevi no seu canal! Beijos do Brasil e sucesso!

Very enjoyable reaction! I have to say, though, that I don't necessarily agree with your... narrative outlook, I guess? I mean, obviously, judge a narrative how you will, but I think placing emphasis on what the outcome of a story means for the characters misses that most stories are written for an audience. Like, an alternate ending for this movie where they don't speak to one another would be sad for Taki and Mitsuha a bit, but only tragic for the audience, because we're the only ones who know anything is actually wrong. The purpose of that story would be to explore what that particular feeling of restless malaise -- that sense that there's some unnamable thing missing from our lives -- could mean. I always recommend that people watching this movie also read Haruki Murakami's short story, "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning" -- it feels like there are potentially some thematic connections (almost like that alternate Taki could be the narrator).

Very interesting perspective! I admit maybe I’ve got a narrow view. But also I think it’s interesting saying something is ‘only’ tragic for the audience. I very well might be misunderstanding what you’re getting at (it happens a lot!) but the audience is a major part of what matters and whether a movie is a happy or sad ending is entirely determined by the audience’s reaction to it. So something being tragic for the audience in my mind IS a tragic story, because let’s face it the characters are fictional so it’s really only us that matter in the equation. At least that’s what I think.

51:18 SPOILER from another anime show I understand what you mean like in Your lie to April’s ending where the sad ending is used firstly to show the protagonist development facing lost of someone he loves, and also to close the year with a new April, full of cherry blossoms symbol meaning to going through life even after winter, that symbolizes death…

There’s only “me”, “myself” and “I” in English, but when it comes to Japanese first-person pronouns, the options are seemingly endless such as Watashi ,Atashi,Watakushi,Sessya,Wagahai, Boku, and Ore

The dub for this one was pretty good. I strongly recommend the sub for A Silent Voice though. There's a scene where he's supposed to use her first name for the first time but he was using her first name the whole time in the dub. It takes away all of the emotion from the line.
@JentWatches
@JentWatches 2 года назад
A bit too late, haha. I have already watched (and posted) A Silent Voice in dub. I do know about the scene you're talking about, but also the dub had an actual deaf actress playing Shouko so it felt very authentic too. I don't mind missing a couple moments that didn't translate well for an experience that connects with me more. But thanks for the suggestion anyway!

@@JentWatches I just found the video, I'm actually watching it now. I actually just commented on it mentioning her VA being deaf. I do love the English version, I just reccomend the sub for the first viewing.

this movie has alot of issues where jokes cant translate well because of how different japanese and english is, which does affect the dub however the dub nails every fucking aspect of voice acting that the japanese dub does in ways no other dubbed thing ive watched has managed to do, right down to vocal characteristics when swapped being ever so slightly different, even giving them an EVER SO SLIGHT accent/pronunciation difference that the voice acters do replicate when swapped
