YOUR NAME (2016) Anime REACTION *first time watching* 

I don't think anyone has explained some of the plot points in the comments, so I'll do it. Don't worry, you're not dumb to not understand them. These can get pretty confusing. Heads up, this is copied from multiple sources, none of this is my original writing. For anyone who bothers reading this, it's going to be really long. The *origin of the movie* first: "The entire movie revolves around a legend called "The red thread of fate" originally coming from Chinese mythology. This folklore is quite popular in Japan too, and implies that there is an invisible chord attached around the finger of those that are destined to meet each other as they are "their true lover". I'd recommend reading more about it on Wikipedia as it's very fascinating. Mitsuha's grandmother talks about the flow of time and the idea of "the red thread of fate" in the movie. That the thread may twist and tangle, become undone and reconnect, but it'll never break. If you go back and rewatch exactly 1 hour into the movie when Taki enters the cave and drinks the misubi "the other half of Mitsuha" there is a sequence where he is thrown into a flashback of when Mitsuha was born and the major events that occured during her childhood. If you pay extra attention to this scene you'll see that there is a red thread attached to Taki and how the other end of the thread leads to Mitshua. The reason why this scene is important is because it basically confirms that she and Taki are destined lovers as there is a red thread attached between them." I'll try and address some things that confused a ton of people in the movie, *Q. "How were Taki and Mitsuha able to see each other briefly on the mountain?"* At “tasogare-doki”, a time of day different worlds blur together (or at twilight for simplicity) Thus, Taki and Mitsuha switch back to their bodies and meet at the shrine. *Q. "Why did they forget each other's name at the end?"* In the movie, at 36:10 (the scene around 19:38 for your video) they offer their kuchikamisake (which is said to be half of them) the grandmother mentions that they're now crossing to "the next world", or the netherworld. She also says that in order to return to their original world, they need to leave behind what's most important to them. At that time, they leave behind their kuchikamisake, which is half of them. Later, in the scene where Taki and Mitsuha meet on the mountain, in order to exit the mountain/shrine they must leave behind the most important thing to themselves. At that time, the most important thing to them was the memories of each other. So they leave that behind. Another thing is that once Taki gives Mitsuha her red yarn bracelet back, it severs their connection. *Q. "Why did Taki not write his name in the end, instead writing I love you?"* If Taki wrote his name on her palm it would have vanished too! The reason that the messages disappeared but the "I love you" did not is because in Japanese folklore, all messages of love are protected by the moon god, Tsukuyomi. Knowing this, Taki chose to write "I love you" instead of his name. *Q. "How did Mitsuha convince her dad to listen to her at the end?"* (TL;DR at the end, skip to it for a shorter answer) Mitsuha's dad Toshiki started off as a folklorist researcher from a Kyoto university. He was doing one of his routine researches on Shinto shrines all over the country when he visited Itomori Shrine and inquired about its traditions, which seems different from most of the better known shrines. (Think of the difference between an individual grocery in contrast to the more well-known chain supermarkets) Hitoha (grandma), being the old-fashioned grumpy grandma that she is, lets her daughter Futaha do the answering for Toshiki's interviews. Futaha tells Toshiki that thanks to the Marugoro Fire 200 years ago, nearly all records that explain the shrine's origins are lost. Only the rituals remain. Toshiki noticed that the prayers and chants were all over the place and largely inconsistent with one another, Futaba explains that after the fire, the shrine was forced to incorporate rituals from other bigger shrines to fill in the missing gaps. Toshiki came pretty close to the truth. Noticing that Lake Itomori is a crater lake, he speculated the place was the site of a massive meteor disaster 1200 years ago, and the shrine was built as a warning for future generations to prepare for the meteor's next coming. The bulk of the chapter then focuses on Toshiki falling in love and marrying Futaha. A condition for obtaining Hitoha's blessing was that he adopt the Miyamizu surname and become the shrine's priest, meaning he had to give up everything, his university job, his family (who more or less disowned him), and his life in the big city. For a while he was happy, until Futaha died after giving birth to Yotsuha. She left behind a cryptic message as she lay on her death bed "Everything happens for a reason." Feeling frustrated and helpless at being unable to save his wife, and blaming the shrine god which he served for failing to bless Futaha, its shrine priestess who had been selflessly serving all her life, Toshiki abandoned his duties as a priest. He then decided to enter politics in order to "change the backward, feudal and superstitious thinking" of the townsfolk, who were overly dependent on the Miyamizu Shrine for guidance and advice. This decision was also borne out of his petty grudge towards Miyamizu Shrine and its "ungrateful" god, and he seeks to undermine its power. Ironically, his Miyamizu surname became his greatest political asset as the townsfolk were more ready to listen to a Miyamizu. He promptly defeated the incumbent and set about carrying out his reforms (while not forgetting to give massive pork barrels to Teshi's dad, his greatest supporter). And so we come back to the present day, on the day the meteor fell. The first time he saw his daughter trying to persuade him to evacuate the townsfolk, like everyone else, he was taken aback at how unusually manly and gruff she behaved, and correctly guessed that this person was "not his daughter". After a whole series of incidents - the power outage, public announcement hijacking, Hitoha and Yotsuha suddenly coming over to evacuate (as Mitsuha told them to), he then began to seriously consider whether Mitsuha was telling the truth. When he saw Mitsuha, now bruised all over, enter his office again, he suddenly saw her resemblance to Futaha, and instantly understood at once Futaha's last words "Everything happens for a reason." As mayor of the town, he alone would have the power to evacuate the townsfolk. It was as though he was fated to meet and marry Futaha, and that Futaha's death would drive him to enter politics and become mayor. He was essentially in the right place at the right time, and his daughter would be the final key in making the evacuation happen. *TL;DR* The first time, he obviously knew that it wasn't Mitsuha, not unlike everyone else who saw Taki-in-Mitsuha for the first time. After the series of unusual events, he then remembered his late wife's last words "Everything happens for a reason", and upon seeing Mitsuha again, saw her resemblance to her mother, and understood those words were meant for him - that he was fated to be in a position of power to evacuate the townsfolk to safety, and that Mitsuha would be the messenger.

50:08 Actually by not writing his name, Taki did the right thing. His name would have vanished from her palm anyway or she would have not understood why there was a name on her palm. Since he wrote "I love you" she remembered the "feeling" in her heart thereafter. He wanted to let her feel the emotion rather than a name; he wanted to know what he felt. They say you remember emotions more strongly than the name or face of a person. People never forget how you make them FEEL. This is why even after years they longed for each other; it is because they remember how they made each other feel. This part of the movie is basically trying to convey this point that even without knowing each other's names, they were tied together because of a strong feeling..which was "love"

When Taki wrote 'I love you' on her hand, he was aware if he wrote his name, it would get erased (because he saw the texts dissapear that had Mitsuha in it), so instead he wrote 'I love you'

The intro song dream lantern did have some lyrics referring to dimensions..The entire story is intertwined (the primary plot - musubi) with so many references that if you start decoding it, you will be amazed each time you find something.

You should watch weathering with you. In there we can see Mitsuha and Taki got married and they even have a child. Them walk past eachother in the last because even though they have so many questions to ask, even though they can sense something which is so strong, what should they ask? What should they talk? They just know something happened and that's why they searched for eachother desperately in the crowd. Imagine yourself in their shoes. To them, they are complete strangers but the good thing is, it lead to a new start which the grandma didn't get to. They are gonna do it all over again starting from the name.
