WRITTEN REVIEW: www.watchgecko.com/the-hamilt...
The field watch
So we already have our everyday watch in the collection, so now its time for something a little different. Field watches. Now, as a concept, they somewhat live in the shadows of divers when it comes to tool watches. However, field watches steam from the same desires a diver has. The necessity for something tough, durable, easy to read and reliable.
The main difference seems to be the field watches disregard for bulk. Diver watches historically benefit from being larger in size. Whether that be favouring a 36mm case size rather than 32 - 34mm back in the 50s, or 44mm over 40mm in 2010. Field watches, on the other hand, suit being more slim, subtle and under the radar. They may not have received the limelight as divers have, but they certainly still have a place in your collection.
Inspired by the military, built to last”
The Khaki Mechanical is Hamilton’s way of paying the highest form of respect to original military field watches that left a mark on purposeful watchmaking indefinitely. It tastefully allows more modern wrists to appreciate the origins of many popular designs in a reliable, obtainable way.
After opening the box for the first time you can easily see Hamilton has nailed not only the dimensions but also the design. The name of the game with the NOMOS was legibility, so for Hamilton, it has to be authenticity. Everything about this watch from the hands, case and dial all feel like a genuine vintage watch.

A screw down crown would be a terrible idea on a manual wind watch, imagine having to unscrew and re-screw the crown daily just to wind it. No thanks, this isn’t a diver and no one is diving with it. No screw down crown is needed here.

I own this watch and adore it. It’s getting the most wear out of my collection at the moment. I really like the stock strap, id like to see a bracelet option, preferably with fitted end links, but straight links could be OK as they’d give it a Tudor Ranger feel.

It's a field watch and it's hand winding, a screw down crown is not really necessary. I wear this a lot, it keeps excellent time and is so slim that many would think it's a quarzt unless they see the snooth second hand moving. It looks just awesome. Great job from Hamilton.

@mikec3454
@mikec3454 4 года назад
@@NathanChisholm041 It's not really case diameter that makes a watch wear large, it's the lug to lug that does this. Hence why a watch like the Nomos Club at 36mm wears much larger than stated; it has a L2L of roughly 48mm. Same goes for this Khaki Mechanical... I think the 38mm is probably the right size to offer this at, though it would have been cool to see a Limited Edition or something at 36mm.

Had the grandfather of this watch in the Marines in the late 60s/early 70s. Sold it... dumb move. Now nearly 50 years later bought this watch... and is the same in every way, just beautifully evolved. 38mm instead of the 34mm case on the original Hamilton... but same movement (but better) and same classically functional design. ETA 2801 movement, keeps very accurate time, hacking feature..... Highly recommended.

Anyone know of two-piece straps that are a little thicker (bulkier) at the top that can take up a little of that space between the spring bars and the case? I've wanted one of these since I had a Timex Camper back in the day. But if there's too much of a gap, it might not do it for me. I don't want to be limited to Nato straps. Any suggestions?

Great review. I miss Hamilton Khaki with the date which I recently sold. I am now considering to buy this and rebuild my watch collection from scratch. Having a screw-down crown on a hand wind watch is a very bad idea as it would mean you have to unscrew the crown, wind it up the screw it down again. Now imagine doing this everyday and the wear and tear that it would make on to screwdown crown. So yeah, for automatic watches and most especially for divers the screw down crown make sense. Again, great review and I look forward to getting a vintage leather strap from you for my future Timex Marlin 34mm Handwind

You didn't explicitly mention the lugs are excessively long, in line with the previous khaki manual wind case, until the very end and only very briefly, which makes normal straps look odd with too big a gap between the strap and the tops and bottoms of the case; and NATOs or Rhinos are the only choice that get away with it which make the watch ride off the wrist by a few mm making it top heavy and thicker; as opposed to the Khaki Auto case which is much better proportioned.
@dustycups

Why can't Hamilton place that watch face on it's quartz khaki???

A screw-down crown completely defies the point of the field watch.

Faux lume... I'd just call it a nice warm lume

No way should a non dive watch have a screw down crown, not unless they put real effort to make it durable, but not on a hand-winding only watch. Scale should change ratios for some parts that's true, you don't just scale up a watch case but still this watch should have been made at 36 or 37 mm.

@dustycups

Fandi Hidayat Yes it’s the new one. You can also compare the beat rate of the seconds hand. New one has 6/sec, old one has 8. You can tell the difference by eye - new one looks more stuttery.

there is an automatic version of this watch which i find should have a screw down crown as it's an automatic it baffles me why they didn't do that as for this version of the watch the screw down crown would be useless as its treads would ware down quick as you have to screw and unscrew to wind it up i do wish a version of the automatic comes out where it has a screw down crown but that is just a fariytail

Because that would require it to be bulkier. This is not a dive watch. I can’t comprehend why people want more than swimming pool resistance on a FIELD watch.
@dustycups
@dustycups 5 лет назад
@@ilmostro16 30m is barely rated to resist gentle splashing, let alone swimming in a pool unfortunately! 30m resistance does not mean you can take it 30m deep. It's weird but that's not how the ratings work. Even just a full water submersion is very risky with 30m resistance. A bit limiting for a field watch I think.

It's too bad Hamilton doesn't make their minute markers more like this on their other watches where they use that ugly subdivided scale. And that's "pierced-lugs", not "drilled-lugs".
