Today I am sharing the EASIEST way to sew a Zipper fly in the whole wide world. I promise. This method uses integrated front facings on the pant or skirt and this alone saves time and many many steps compared to other methods.
I am demonstrating this easy technique on a skirt but it will be the same on a pair of trousers. Come and join me for a full step by step tutorial and after you see how easy this is, I hope you try this way of sewing a zipper.
You can add the little template I show in the pattern to anything and you can even replace this for other more involved methods.
The skirt I am working on is the feature Friday pattern for tomorrow the 27th of August. The cute Glissando (Love Notions 0-32US) has pants, shorts & a skirt in ONE pattern & it’s $5 today. I’ve converted the original button fly to a zipper fly on my new skirt. My affiliate link is: www.lovenotion...

DISCLAIMER: I don't have a fabric sponsor. I produce sewing content independently from pattern brands and share my unique way of sewing with you, with my own investment of resources. I don’t necessarily follow instructions rigidly. My opinions are honest, especially around fit and sewing techniques.

Update: I just installed 2 zippers this way and I was successful!!!🎉🎉🎉 I have to admit that the first fly zipper came out a tiny bit crooked because I was too lazy to hand baste. I have learned my lesson! The second zipper fly I hand basted and it came out straight.

Karina you're an absolute blessing. I started watching this vlog before my reverse shoulder replacement this morning. I'm now in high care for the night and watching the rest of your video has cheered me up immensely! I cannot thank you enough. It took my mind completely off my environment and the rehab that lies ahead. The only sadness is that I will only be able to cut and sew after 3-6 months! In the meantime I'll feast on other's achievements. 💓💓💓👌👏👏👏

Oh Karina, I can't explain how happy this video makes me! I've always thought zippers were difficult and avoided patterns that include them (probably because most of my experience is the annoyance of replacing zippers in readymade garments), so this video is a real eye opener. Many thanks for the clear instructions and no, I wont tell anyone what the pattern might be... although it is already Friday here, so I might just go and have a look at you know where.

Hi Karina - thanks for another great sewing video, I'm going to give this a try today as I've been looking at refining my zip's so this is a good addition to learn the techniques. I have a question on another subject perhaps another video idea? When drafting my own patterns I've struggled to find a way to store them so that I can see them easily if needed and not take up too much space. I tried hanging them on hooks, but just don't have the room. A4 Envelopes I've got are too small - how do you keep track and store your own personal patterns so you can reuse again when needed?

Dear Karina, what size is the center seam? It looks like 5/8?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 2 года назад
See at minute 3:20. It does not matter what seam allowance it is. Because this technique can be applied to any pattern, use the one the original pattern is drafted with.

@stonewarebirds3620
@stonewarebirds3620 Год назад
Unfortunately what i didn’t realise was that the fly section had to be cut at the time you cut the whole trouser leg. I had got stuck with a very poor pattern instruction and thought your method was a solution, and because of the interfacing - despite having watched the film twice before i did anything - it looked as if you laid the two fly pieces over the centre seam, and it was only when i turned mine inside out at the same time as yours and i had a seam allowance showing and you didn’t that i realised my mistake. Perhaps it would be good to show you cutting the fabric to make this really clear? Thank you anyway. also really curious about why you don’t put pins at a right angle to the seam and sew straight over the pins? A lot less hassle than taking them out as you go.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles Год назад
I never put pins like you say because I don’t think they line up the raw edges accurately. It’s all preference and I don’t think I do is wrong per se. It’s been ok for me for a long time. I don’t film cutting out because it’s the only section of the process I do in my own time. Filming it all is super exhausting, but if you’ve never made sewing videos, you’d never know.
@stonewarebirds3620
@stonewarebirds3620 Год назад
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles i understand if it is time consuming, no i’ve never made sewing videos strangely enough, so perhaps make it clear verbally? I never said you did the pins wrong, i was simply curious. Sorry if i have offended you i was simply trying to flag up a problem i encountered, you did say you were open to constructive criticism and i wasn’t even criticising just making a suggestion and being curious…

I showed exactly the measurements and how I added it to the Center front of the original piece. I don’t think it was necessary to see me cutting the piece of paper. Also, the length of the piece will vary with the length of the zipper needed.
