Welcome to the fourth episode of Your Stories, a series of interviews with members of the chronic pain/TMS community where they share their stories of recovery from their symptoms, no matter what stage they may be at.
Deb Malkin is a body worker (massage therapist) and now also a mind-body coach. Since discovering Curable App and the work of Dr Sarno her recovery from chronic knee pain pain was pretty quick in comparison to many other stories I've heard, but she dived right in and embraced the brain science concept so well right from the beginning, that the core of her recovery was so rooted in feeling safe and not broken, wrapped in a blanket of self-compassion, that her brain got the message quickly and she felt relief almost instantly.
That said, she still had her fair share of symptom imperatives show up, including anxiety. This is a beautiful story about self-acceptance, viewing yourself and your experience through a lens of safety and dialing down the perfectionism and self-criticism to allow the nervous system to relax (with the help of her furry friend Lionel!)
Her full interview and page on my website can be found here along with links to the mindbody resources she mentions in her testimony: mytmsjourney.c...

Great story. Thank you. I have had knee pain for 27 years now. It started with running. I stopped doing it because the pain didn't go away. For many years I have had the (limiting) belief that running has ruined my knee and that running is bad for my knee. Running and knee pain are inextricably linked in my brain. I have to get rid of that limiting belief which is (still) anchored in my subconscious brain. That connection must be broken. I also have other TMS complaints. Neck, shoulders, back, groin, feet, arms, wrists. I have visited all the doctors and other medical workers in the world with zero results. Zero.. I am convinced that my complaints are not caused by suppressed emotions (I'm not a Sarno guy). I don’t do journaling. It makes no sense to me. My complaints have become chronic due to continuous focus and fear. All day long. For years and years. Body scanning all day long. Fear that it will never go away and that is exactly what happened. Self fulfilling prophecy. The pains became learned. The body has solved it years ago, but I still feel pain everywhere. 6 months ago I discovered TMS. I'm on the right track now, but I still have a long way to go. I started running again, very carefully. My brain is not happy with that (increase of pain) and tries to stop (protect) me. I will continue to challenge myself. I now know that I am not broken. Finding out I have TMS is a true liberation. I found a quote on the internet that gives me great comfort and strength: “I promise you, there is life on the other side of all this TMS, of all these things that are making you miserable. You can challenge yourself, you can do things that you thought were impossible”

Thank you for sharing your story! Have you read the book the way out by Alan Gordon? He fosuses on pain reprocessing therapy, releasing fear, focus, mindset etc. Less psychology focused. All the best to you 🙏❤️
