The Sledge is already my favorite. It amazes me on how it recovers from nasty crashes. Crashes that would end a session on most trucks. I’ve broken things, but the Sledge is the goto for daily bashing, for now. Where did you get the fan? I like the cover.
My sledge has been sitting after getting a bunch of X trucks but after watching this I think it’s time to fix the rear differential and get back to sending it. I purchased the traxxas hardened and a NHX spiral cut for $24. I’ll see how these cheap gears last
@@DoRC I have the traxxas one in the front differential, still strong, blew a GPM rear differential and sat since. Just pulled it apart few days ago and the small tooth gear one is all mushroomed.
Gives me an overall better feeling driving with spiral gears in my front/rear diff in my xmaxx. In my centre i use carbon steel gears i believe they add about 20% strenght. So my break or wearout points are now my drive cups and stub axle which is an easy fix and have them on stock
Spiral gears are definitely stronger though they do add an axial force component which can be problematic with the unconstrained pinion gear on the X-Maxx.
I cant see your face, by the video , i can tell you have smiles for miles, Iam very happy with my sledge, & i have done a few tweaks as i mentioned to you in past posts. Great video brother 😉👍🏼💯
I think that Traxxas always put those centered gears in all their truck so to me it’s just part of the business model for making the trucks. And like you, I too would rather have aftermarket so their as nice as they can be. We could go on about their rtr servos too… Hey, thanks for the video 😊
Yeah when they offer the upgraded gears at the exact same time as they release the product it is hard to imagine that they don't realize there's a deficiency. That being said I've had good luck with their gears for the most part. As long as they're shimmed correctly they work pretty well.
I'm not sure that's necessarily true. I've run mine exclusively on 6s and had no issues with my stock gears. Thanks for commenting and a sub to my channel is appreciated!
I can't wait to get the machined gears in my sledge. It is definitely becoming one of my favorite trucks as well. I really haven't been bashing it very hard yet. Parts are still kind of hard to get. I have a Maxx that takes most of the abuse. I just can't wait for the aftermarket to catch up and make some parts.
The max is crazy durable! I haven't broken anything on this truck yet. I did pull the wing Mount out of its screws on that last bash but it didn't actually break anything I just screwed it back together.
Unfortunately I don't have my sledge anymore. It is pretty straightforward though. You just need to remove the center differential by removing the screws that hold it in at the top. Once you have the center diff out just take the four screws off that hold it together, remove the side gear that should be stuck to the spur gear slide the pin out that's underneath it pull the differential cup off that was held in by that pin removed the little o-ring and gasket then just put it all back together on the new gear. Hope that helps :-) Thanks for the sub!
After a hundred packs, the gears of my sledge are still in good condition... I'm waiting for them to break to install these option parts... but they don't break 😄
@@DoRC what servo did you go with if you don’t mind me asking. I have a savox 2290sg that I thought about trying but I’m not sure if it would work in the truck or not.
@@jacobhenson3952 still running the stock one. I have a dmond 60kg that I need to review I'll probably be putting in it I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I think that a good budget but not too cheap servo would be the power hobby 729. I've been running those in several cars for quite some time and I have not been disappointed
Bashing it for awhile. Bro, the thing looks brand new. What kind of bashing our we talking about. Like living room on the carpet or richduperbash sending it.
Somewhere in the middle. I bash on soft sand so my vehicles don't really get visually torn up like some peoples do. They still break plenty often they just don't get abraded like they do when people bash on concrete or even hard pack sand rocks etc.
Im going to customize and upgrade just about everything on my new Sledge. What kind of grease is to be used when changing the differentials, the Traxxas Marine Grease?
You can use pretty much anything greasy. It doesn't really matter in my experience. Some people even run them dry with no issues. Biggest thing to keep in mind is just to use enough to wet the teeth and know more. The teeth only need a tiny amount of grease and anymore is just a waste and makes a mess. Thanks for watching and if you aren't already subscribed a sub is appreciated :-)
For 800$, this car should've came with these gears. And the fact they released it almost simultaneously as the car itself, strongly suggests traxxas knew about the problem prior to release. Not cool traxxas.
I'm not entirely sure that there is a problem. I haven't seen that many people breaking these gears. That being said having the upgrade come out of the exact same time as the truck does feel a little like a slap in the face. Anyway thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated!
I myself have bought a few traxxas RCs and I do love the ones I have. But at the price point of the sledge traxxas should have put all machined gears through out the truck.Im sure traxxas did it on purpose just to screw people out of more money.
@@silo1082 it's possible but it's also possible that they just were trying to keep the price point down. I don't think we'll ever know. Thanks for watching and if you are going to be subscribed a sub is appreciated!
Kyosho 96644 are the shims for the pinion. Make sure you take a look at your bulkheads and bearings. Even if they could use shimming they shouldn't be clicking out of the box.
I'm not sure. I normally only shim pinions unless there's something seriously wrong with the fit of the differential itself. To figure it out though you just need a pair of calipers and measure the part of the gear that the bearing goes on. You can then go on Amazon and look up shims with that internal diameter and you should come up with assortments that will work. Thanks for watching and if you enjoy my videos a sub to my channel is appreciated:)
@@DoRC thanks very much for replying back ..I will have to look if I have some shims in shop here ..Im thinking the shims from Kraton 6s might work ..work on them diffs pretty good ..should work on Sledge as well ..will have to see ✌
I have found that a few common sizes works for most different things. The 8 mm ID shims are pretty handy and I would say 75% likely what are on the sledge but not sure
I love your channel. I'm glad you made this video. I already ordered machined gears from Traxxas. If when I go to do the install I need pinion shims where could I order them from. I know they don't make shims for the sledge, so maybe arrma shims would work? Thanks
@@mikehoskins4112 yeah basically you want there to be as little play between the two as you can get away with without them binding at all anywhere in the rotation
I have a brand new read one at the hobby shop waiting for me I want run mine until I put a bumper on an put a strong servo in. I'll be putting in the new gears u have
True if you have to upgrade but as long as you keep the power system stock the stock gears do last pretty well. When I pulled mine out they still looked brand new and while I have heard of some people having issues with them the majority of people don't. It would be nice if they came with the better gears stock though. There are much less expensive trucks that come with nicer gears than that. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting and if you enjoy my videos a sub to my channel is appreciated!
Just ordered one for the rear going to leave the front for now. It’s crazy is they are hard to find in Canada right now. Was going to order from traxxas but they want 46 bucks for shipping plus another 35 for duties I’ll pass. Ordered them from a hobby shop in the us for much much cheaper and I’ll avoid the duties shipping with usps
What about the spur gear in the center diff. Just got my Sledge and broke a tooth on the center spur gear in the first half hour... not even running it hard yet. No crashes, lawn darts or anything. Just mild playing around. The monkey metal in that center gear is junk... and I haven't been able to find a hardened steel option to replace it with?
So far the only company I know that's come out with one has been GPM and I honestly wouldn't trust their parts. Hopefully someone like hot racing will come out with something soon. Till then just make sure that your mesh is good and that your Mount screws are tight. So far I've had no issues with mine. Thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated!
I have a 2x4 screwed to the bottom on the plywood that hooks over the blocks which helps a lot. That being said they still do get knocked over a couple times a session:) Thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated!
Neither of mine ended up needing shimming but that's just luck of the draw. There's a pretty serious tolerance stack up that will affect where the gears end up in relationship to each other. Sometimes no shimming is needed and sometimes a bunch is. Doesn't inherently mean there's anything wrong. Thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated :-) also don't forget to check out the giveaway I'm doing in one of my latest videos!
It's one of the generic aluminum case fans that you can get on Amazon. I had to slightly modify it because the design of the fan makes it slightly larger than 40 mm but it was easy to do with a few minutes and a file
I have a video about adapting a slash bumper which is what's on mine. That being said RPM now has a purpose-built bumper so it's probably a better option. I didn't do anything to reinforce my chassis.
Oh it's gorilla tape. The second best way to reinforce a body :-) I have a video that I made a couple weeks ago that shows the best way with fiberglass tape and adhesive.
I’m picking up my motor fan tomorrow, and I just might get those gears as well but I’ll install them at a later date. What position do you run your TSM at?
I can definitely understand that sentiment. They're really nice but the truck is pretty expensive. Don't forget to check out my latest video I'm doing a giveaway :-)
I wouldn't say you have to run these upgrades. I've put quite a few packs through my truck with the stock differentials with no issues. I also haven't seen any widespread reports of people breaking theirs. Yes there have been some. That being said I do think that it would have been best for the truck to come with better gears stock. I find it a little suspect that they had the upgraded ones available immediately on release of the truck. Oh well:)
@@FLPatrick1095 yeah marketing is marketing unfortunately. Everything is going to be purported to be the best thing ever. That being said I'm really happy with mine. There aren't very many other RCS that I've owned that haven't broken anything out of the box in the first dozen packs or so. After making this video I did notice I'm having a drive shaft pin migrate on me though so that's not cool. Fortunately Traxxas warranty is pretty good
I didn't have any issues with my stock ones on 6s I have seen a few other people that have though so it may be necessary for some :-) thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated!
Eh. Not really. Asding traxxas parts shouldn't hurt thr warranty and after the first couple runs im not really worried about the warranty anyway. Thanks for watching and a sub is appreciated!
@@DoRC i have to say, it think it should be an upgrade, stocks are ok, i haven’t had any problems with mine and now have about 4 full packs through truck. 😉👍🏼💯
@@vitodambra72 yeah it's a tough one. It would be nice to have it stock but it's also nice to have it be as high quality as possible. The upgrade is definitely a better looking piece than the stock arrma ones.
I think that's just a cost savings measure. Uses a little bit less material per gear. Thanks for commenting and if you aren't already subscribed a sub is appreciated!
Also those traxxas gears aren't good as you think. I had many throughout the years especially my slash and they keep breaking. The stockers are cheap and can be bought from the many chop shops on ebay. Traxxas uses cheap materials and are not worth there price tag.
I've had really good experiences with Traxxas upgraded gears. That being said I had don't have a lot of experience with their 3s line. I suspect these will probably be fine. I guess time will tell. The problem with the chop shops is that they almost always sell full differentials not just the gears. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting and a sub is appreciated!
Not a huge fan of this video because you completely ignored the inherently weakier design of the assembled DIFFERENTIAL unit due to the missing tabs on the new ring gear. This was a deliberate oversight on your part. You could have at least said that in your opinion you don't think it matters but you chose the "don't ask, don't tell" route. Sure the gear might be stronger itself but the screws and diff case now how to deal with a lot more localized stress. Lets see if the plastic diff case now fails. If that fails all the other gears will strip inside the diff, maybe the bulkheads will fail too. You have to look at the system as a whole. If you change one part it affects all the other parts.
I didn't deliberately overlook it I just don't think it's relevant. There are plenty of other differentials in RC that don't use those tabs. It's not an issue. I don't see any reason it'll be an issue here either. I'm not sure why Traxxas chose to have them on the stock gears but they could have easily included them on the upgraded ones as well if they were actually necessary. Honestly it didn't even occur to me to mention it because it's not really relevant. I appreciate your opinion and your passion but I didn't deliberately do anything in this case.
