Here's why you need one professionally produced voice over demo.With the availability of quality recording equipment you might be tempted to produce your own voice over demo. This is OK for audiobooks, phone system work and podcasts and other simple projects. But to succeed in the high end VO business you need a professionally produced demo. Agents, casting companies, ad agencies and production companies will judge your professionalism by your demo. To compete with the best, you need to present yourself with a top-notch demo
I have LIVE ZOOM Voiceover Classes which are virtual classes that meet over the zoom app on scheduled days. Class size is limited to 4-6 students. You get immediate feedback from me and all your work is recorded and available to download.
I have ONLINE VIDEO Voiceover Classes. These are videos with worksheets and PDF downloads. You can go through the lessons at your own pace and repeat any section at any time. You are a lifetime subscriber so all updates are available.

This is really discouraging. When you can do and have been doing voices all your life, and clearly have the talent, to hear this and be told nope you have to pay thousands of dollars to do that. Did anyone overcome this?
@kalvincarlwilson9718

You are wright. If someone else does the work for you, then the time comes when you get your first job Now What. You have to go back to the person that did your demo work and tell them I need your help again. Yes they will help you at 50% of what the job will pay. This happens all the time. So get your own setup and do your own DEMO yourself.

a loan may be in your future get a personal loan and dont let money be your shackles but your fuel for the future yes a loan must be repaid but you can either take the loan out and try and fail then pay it back with standard jobs or you can try and win and pay that loan off in one or 3 simple payments with gigs offered to you from your new voice over career

Yes, you can. This is basically an ad to all the little studios who are going out of business because people can do these things at home easily these days. You need to learn a few additional things but loving doing Voice Over is still the most important part...forget this guy

Overcome it by producing your own. Seriously, as someone who just started getting my feet wet in the business as of almost a year ago, this time last year I watched videos of the pros telling people they should never spend less than $1000 for a really good microphone if they want to be taken seriously in the voice over business. I ignored that advice and took it upon myself to purchase a Rode NT1 microphone kit and couldn't be any more thrilled with my purchase. I've spent the better part of this past year practicing and getting a feel for doing voices overs by recording my own etc.. I also chose to ignore videos like this one telling me to spend at least $3000 to get a professionally recorded demo reel done, and am now in the process of producing my own demo. Yes, I am someone with a great deal of my own technical savvy, but if I had listened to all the discouraging advice telling me not to do those things, I'd be no further ahead than where I was this time last year, looking for information on how to get started. Everyone has to start somewhere. Not everyone has thousands of dollars just lying around to purchase Neumann microphones etc and get professionally recorded demos done and it's just not realistic to think everyone does. And, no, you should have to go into heavy debt to get started.

ACS402010 indeed and best of luck to you! I myself got a Shute KSM32 and I’m working on doing the same. Booth Junkie’s channel has been a great help. And so are tutorials on how to best edit voice overs in Reaper.

Yeah, as someone who works professional as a video editor and sometimes does their own audio work, it's really not that hard to learn. Especially not with software like Adobe, which is basically gotten so intuitive to use, anyone could learn how. Add to this the near endless and free online support through Adobe's website and youtube. I'm sorry if this sounds like a plug but this video sure did sound like one too, so it only seemed fair.

Appreciate Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Proutklarton Clean Earning Plan (do a google search)? It is a good exclusive guide for making big money by setting up a voice over business minus the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my friend after a lifetime of fighting got cool results with it.

Seems counter productive. When you make a demo reel you are showing off your talents. If you cannot produce professional sounding voiceovers on your own then you aren't going to get anywhere with a professional sounding demo reel. It's like getting someone else to take your bar exam to become a lawyer.

Thanks for writing. I understand your reasoning but your talent and ability as a voice talent rarely involves (or requires) the skills that are required to produce a effective voice over demo. In a typical voice over job you don't write the script, you often don't direct yourself, you don't chose the background music or sound effects. You don't mix and master the finished production. And you don't even decide that you're are the most appropriate talent for that script and project. When you work with a demo producer you offload the responsibilities of selecting and writing material for your script, directing you to achieve the best performance, editing to select the best takes, choosing music and SX that enhance your performance without overshadowing it, mixing the spots to highlight your abilities, sequencing the spots for the most powerful impression and mastering the finished, fully-produced demo to industry standards. Offloading this to a professional demo producer allows the voice talent to be just that - a voice talent - and concentrate on being A+ at what they do. Abe Lincoln said: "A Man Who Is His Own Lawyer Has a Fool for a Client". Strong but true language. Don't risk being a C+ producer doing your own demo. Be an A+ Voice Talent working with an A+ Demo producer to get A+ results.

I edit a lot of video and audio due to my profession. My take on this is that a Professional Demo will show everyone what a Good Producer can do for you, not what you can reproduce at your own studio...
@j.stephenson6468

Exactly. I think the home demo is going to be norm for this industry, if not presently, then definitely in the near future.

It takes years of experience sometimes to make someone sound great, from 30-60 pieces of commercials and other audio clips. Also, stepping away let's someone else highlight your best, which you dismissed. It's an option, not a hard rule to have a pro do it. I would suggest a producer at a local radio station...they produce commercials daily and understand what a client wants/needs (did it for years) and might do it for cheaper. It's a good place to start, get some work and experience, then step up to a pro demo. Always update your demo!!

To be honest, you can learn everything on RU-vid. Yes you should use a professional once you’ve booked and have money. But you can purchase equipment , on amazon, learn editing on RU-vid, you certain program’s and apps to add music etc... once you book you’re get better. But you doing have to spend thousands of dollars to get started. This dude is old school.

That is a really bad example ... You should totally create your own demo and know how to do it. Why?? Because if you are getting jobs from home, and a client loved your professionally recorded demo at a professional studio with a director. Can you produce the same quality at home? If not, be sure that the client who loved your demo.. will NOT be happy. So go learn how to do it at home. In our time now, you have to be more than a voiceover artist to work in the industry. That video is just selling.

Wow. What a terrific voice, professionally recorded and good video quality. But the delivery is flatter than a witch's tits. I'm sure everything he said is right on the money, but he lost me about a minute in, and I can't remember any of it. I can't believe such an experienced voice actor intended his piece to be so drab. Despite that, I still have a good impression if the quality of his voice, so maybe there's something to be taken from it.

Him- You wouldn't do your own headshot Me-Yes, I would😂 Totally get your point but you first have to have the money for a professional demo or headshot. I'm all about figuring things out with little money.
@AlisoCreekVoiceOver

Morgan, I'm a big believer in working with whatever you have at the moment so I agree. If you need a demo to get started and you can do it yourself then go for it, paying attention to the details I outline in the video. But as soon as you have the money to have a professional demo produced do that. A professional demo can pay for itself by attracting one or two good jobs that your home-brewed demo might have discouraged. BTW, I shot my own headshot for this channel-but I would never submit it to an agent.

Totally disagree with William. As long as you master doing editing and follow the rules, you should be able to produce your own demo reel. Your client is going to listen to your capability and demo you have made at your recording studio.If you let someone else produce it for you, is the demo reel going to be the same as yours? Surely not, and you are ruined! Think about it.
@jasonfella265
@jasonfella265 2 года назад
EXACTLY. I've made this same argument many times. As long as your good at your job, know your recording/editing software and how to mix/master, you can certainly do your own demo.

You teach people how to record from a home studio and get professional quality but somehow these same people can't put together a demo using the same skills? That's BS. You must sell that service. How predatory.

how about something useful for those who cannot afford all of these ridiculous extras? there is a pandemic out there and few of us have access to any money especially if we want to advance our careers in the voice over field. To anyone who reads this, a decent mic sold on amazon for 30 bucks, adobe creative cloud has a free trial, and a quiet room is all you need to get started.
